Subject: Co-incidences

On 774, 3LO, ABC Radio, Richard Stubb’s afternoon show today, he was taking talk back on co-incidences. They all took the form of, “a person comes to Australia from Scotland to live, buys a house, meets his new neighbours, then travels back to Scotland to pack up his family, sell his house in Scotland then travel back to Australia to live, before leaving Scotland for good, one of his old Scottish neighbours says “I only know one person in Australia, his name is “ Fred Nerque”, but I don’t think would you know him” As it turns out he bought the house opposite Fred Nerque, I know this story is correct because it involved our family, but all of the other stories were of a similar degree of co-incidence, so how do you compute the “odds” of these sorts of co-incidences? and do any of the contributers to this Forum have verifiable, highly co-incidental stories such as this?

Doing the washing up after Sunday’s beef roast, I made a point of counting the cutlery – as I often do, for fun – as I dried each piece and put it back in the cutlery drawer. I was astonished to find I’d used exactly 11 knives, 11 forks and 11 spoons. Strange indeed, for the cooking and serving of one roast dinner for one person.
