I have noticed that have slightly more sun damage on my left side – from years of being a passenger in a vehicle. I do have overall sun damage from years of being a beach person.

I was staying in a pub in the US once where they were advertising an upcoming event that featured a ‘most suntanned arm’(from car driving) competition. I kind of figured that was a way of keeping black folks out.

:(

I’m still a passenger, but it is my right arm now that cops the sun.
problem is – I really dislike sunscreen, so I try to avoid the sun….which is difficult.

Don’t know what kii’s reason is, but I hate sunscreen. I seem to sweat a lot more if I put it on….and I sweat a lot to start with. Ladies might glow……but I’m obviously not a lady. So sunscreen on the face, go and mow, and it’s in my eyes in no time at all. Even on my arms, no sunscreen = less sweating. Better to restrict the mowing and outdoor work to before 10.00am, after 4.00pm etc etc for me.

You all knew I was odd.

there are many types of sunscreen now.. you can even get it already in products you probably already use.. but even still, working outdoors in ‘decent’ hours is sensible…

even animals use mud and dust as a ‘skin protector’,

Dear self – don’t sneeze when posting on forums. Sometimes you press the submit button and the world explodes, Thanks – kii

So….what were you going to say before you sneezed kii?

:)

Oh, and I don’t use any products on my skin at all. Well, I own a couple of lipsticks. I have some sorbolene used before showering. And I have amolin for the middleaged skin outbreaks on my face. But otherwise, my skin remains pristine.

I don’t like the feel of it, it makes me itch, I worry about the chemicals, I feel like I am suffocating, it scares me…stuff like that.

I do have a tinted face moisturiser that has some SPF something in it….sometimes I wear that.

I know I am bad – one of my brothers had a melanoma removed from his back :/ he’s okay now – 26 years later. I feel guilty because we went to the beach together as kids and teenagers.

buffy – amolin?

I use various lotions and potions on my skin – it’s too dry if I don’t. I also have a large bottle of Alpha-Keri – I adore that :)

I do now thank my mother for refusing to let us sunbake, or even get a tan. In the 1970s that made me very odd man out. But Mum’s grandmother was firmly of the view that we did not belong in this climate (being of English/Irish/Scottish origin) and she was right. Apparently she always wore long sleeves and a hat outside. I don’t wear hats…..my head sweats as well as the rest of me, or better. So my options are restricted to being sensible about my outdoors times.

Speaking of which, time I went out there now and got all messy and wet pulling out the tomato and corn plants that are finished for the season.

I’m not as fastidious as my sister is about her skin, but I do have cleanser, toner and moisturiser. But, I also have good genes and people often think I’m younger when they meet me. If I’m going outside for more than half an hour, I’ll use sunscreen… but mainly cos I don’t like wrinkles ;)

(A woman I used to work with is exactly 1 week older than me, yet looks about 5 years older, but then again, she has three kids :P )

Amolin is the lanolin-type stuff for babies’ bottoms. They stopped recommending lanolin some years ago (although you can still get it, and it’s great for cracked heals) because of some sort of chemical contamination, I think.

Am-o-lin has calamine, almond oil, salicylic acid and zinc oxide in it. So it settles down the red spots quite nicely and I’m happy enough to use willow bark and almond oil on my skin.

I always wore a hat as part of the summer school uniform both primary and secondary schools. I also wore a hat at the beach – especially when I was a teen as I had glasses :/ and they were just straight glasses, not sunnies. The hat helped with the glare.

DA…it’s not that I have philosophical objections really. I can’t be bothered spending time messing about with stuff to put on my skin. And I prefer to spend my money on chocolate……

the alternative for sunscreen is, of course, cover up, stay indoors etc

the point is that the sun does damage your skin, and rarely do we get to see the comparative effects… so I thank this weary old truck driver .. but I can’t help have the sunscreen song go through my head…

No-one had prescription sunnies much then kii. And anyway, even when I started in practice 30 years ago, we still said that kids didn’t need sunnies because eyes were ‘designed’ to cope with the sun.

What I dislike most about sunscreen is the discolouration of shirt collars and cuffs etc when they come into daily contact with it.
