Residential power bills in Perth and the South West are set to rise by an average of $130 a year with the introduction of the carbon tax.
Financial modelling by electricity retailer Synergy has found that its residential customers can expect to pay about nine per cent more for their power.
The Federal Government’s carbon tax will come into effect next month, and this combined with the State Government’s 3.5 per cent electricity hike announced in the recent budget means the average bill will rise by more than $180 a year.
Synergy’s Andrew Gaspar says many households have already started receiving compensation payments from the Federal Government to offset the carbon tax and he is urging people to use the money wisely.
“We encourage them to put that towards their electricity bill and most importantly not to put it towards buying additional appliances which might increase their electricity consumption,” he said.
Mr Gaspar says people struggling to pay their bills should contact the retailer to talk about payment plans.

Electricity Networks Corporation
Western Power is a corporation owned by the Government of Western Australia. It was split from the vertical monopoly of Western Power Company in 2006 during reforms to the state’s energy sector. The new company is registered as Electricity Networks Corporation but trades as Western Power. It is responsible for maintenance of power infrastructure in the area.
When the original Western Power was split it was separated into four stand-alone companies: Western Power – manages the physical network that transports electricity. It operates in the south west of WA, including the Perth metropolitan area. Western Power does not generate electricity or send electricity bills to customers. Its role is to manage the poles, wires, substations and other infrastructure that brings electricity to homes and businesses in the South West Interconnected System (SWIS). Horizon Power – manages the physical network that transports electricity in the north and regional areas of WA. Horizon power is also responsible for electricity generation and billing. Synergy – the energy retailer that manages electricity accounts and is responsible for billing customers. (this has debts od 861,000,000 and mentioned above) Verve – the generation business that produces electricity.
