When did the AFL stop the use of the Drop Kick, and why was this done?

About the late 60s early 70s, bob.

Whilst you could get some prodigious distance with the kick it was also often fluffed, so coaches basically banned players from using it.

That’s right, bob. It is still perfectly legal; so in fact is the place kick when shooting for goal, although I doubt I’ll ever see that in a modern AFL game.

I think I did see that in the late 40’s early 50’s.

I see drop kicks all the time, usually hanging around taverns late at night.

You should give them their full title
viz “Drop kick and punt”

this is why

2 resones

1 the new type of boot , in the old days we had boots that come around our ankels, they were better for doing the drop punt

2 the tredetury of the ball, you can kick ferther but the ball is kicked from the ground, so you would have to go ferther back from the man on the mark to get over him. lossing any advantag of the longer kick :)

Not good for a set shot kicking over the man on the mark, but great for a low-trajectory pass in open play.

I’d like to see modern players practice and perfect it, love to see Hilly burst into space on the wing and nail it right onto Pav’s chest inside 50 :)
