Subject: Email problem

I’m hoping someone here will know the answer to what I think is a very basic problem. I have a dialup account. I also have a wireless thingy. On my computer at work, as the dialup came first (yes, the computer has been around for a while) the email stuff works fine through the dialup….ie, when I am connected via dialup to the internet.

However. If I connect with the wireless thingy, emails will not go. I can’t remember exactly what the message I get is, but it is something to do with the dialup server.

I suspect there is a setting I need to fix. But what? And how to I get to it to set it?

Sorry Buffy I don’t know how to explain it. Perhaps you could post the question on the TT part of the other forum, someone there is bound to be able to tell you.

It’s not a big deal, just annoying. I don’t normally have to email from work. I do it from home. When I am at work I am too busy working to be emailing.

Go into your email account settings and look for the SMTP port value. It is probably set to 25. You need to change this value to 587 and then your email will send correctly.

Thank you. I’ve no idea what this means, but I’ll do it on Tuesday when I go back to work and report back.

Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) is not allowing relaying on SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) port 25. This is what your wireless thingy is trying to do. By using port 587 you can bypass this problem.

That won’t kill off the dialup, will it?

No, the dialup and the wireless thingy will both work fine by using port 587.

If you have more than one email account on that machine, you will need to change the SMTP port settings for each account.

OK, changed the setting…..email still goes through dialup account, wireless thingy says:

“The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was ‘kryton2@bigpond.com’. Subject ‘Testing wireless thingy for email’, Account: ‘mail.ansonic.com.au’, Server: ‘mail.ansonic.com.au’, Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: ’504 5.5.2 <OPTIMA85704E5D>: Helo command rejected: need fully-qualified hostname’, Port: 587, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 504, Error Number: 0×800CCC79”

I used the same recipient email address….I just tried to send via wireless, got that message, unhooked, hooked up to dialup, tried to send, and it went OK.

Um….more help?

Is the wireless & dialup with the same mob?

No. Wireless is bigpond. Dialup is with another mob from millions of years ago who have been sold on quite a number of times…..

So maybe the bigponders don’t like the other mob?

I think you may need to activate SSL and put in the username and password for the dial up when using the wireless.

OR get the email software to ask for this.

In the email account settings, you need to tick the box that says “My server requires authentication” and then under Settings enter the correct username and password.

Ta…I did notice that was not ticked, but I wasn’t sure about ticking it. I’ll get to it tomorrow evening.

Thanks again.
