There’s an article in today’s UK Telegraph, reporting on a study, where Australians come in as the sixth heaviest people on this planet.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthnews/9345086/The-worlds-fattest-countries-how-do-you-compare.html
By Jove, it’s a terrible article; with this little gem embedded:
While the average body mass globally was 62 kg, North Americans weigh in at 81.9 kg.
And while the US makes up only five per cent of the world’s population, it accounts for almost a third of the world’s weight due to obesity.
In comparison, Asia has 61 per cent of the world’s people but only 13 per cent of the world’s weight.
Let us check some of those figures.
Using a population for the world of 6.8 billion and a population of the USA as 310 million, gives us a percentage of the world’s population who are from the USA as 4.56%, not far off the 5% stated in the article.
Using the world’s population and the average weight we get a total mass of humanity at 4.216*10^11 kg.
The total weight of the population of the USA comes in at 2.542*10^10 kg.
Works out that those fat buggers in the USA come in at 6.029% of the world’s weight.
Jaysus, they may be fat, but the article does overstate it a tad.
As for the Australian results, who could go past blaming Bubblecar and his bacchanalian feasts which have influenced countless numbers.
