a pic of a tree half cut down. maybe by one of those old death trap saws with a circular blade. got jambed and the round burn mark is some part of it that rotates and caused the burn.

I’ve got a Hagen swing saw with a blade a yard wide.. good guessing but no.. ;)

to answer that would probably stop all guesswork but I’ll try.. they are wood fibres.

Yep. spot on. it is the anvil part.. the cut out is to drop the wood fibres onto some bark and the same to drop the hot bits into the prepared wood fibres.

The spinning stick is held on the top pivot by a hand held stone with a bearing hole ground into it, a bow is used to spin the shaft. Spin slowly at first to grind some fibres then spin rapidly to make sparks.
I’ve seen people take longer to light a fire with fire starters and matches.

I use about a square inch of waxed cardboard. I found that fatwood is great but not in common supply in Australia.
