Shirley Australia will get some sort of gold in an obscure sport that no one cares about. I donated to the beach volleyball team, they’d better do something!

It was actually really sad- the volleyballers couldn’t afford to take their coaches to London with them so held a few fundraisers and set up donating buckets to raise money. They were highlighting how the popular sports like swimming got huge funding from sponsors etc and could afford to take anyone they wanted, but other sports were forgotten. How awful to not be able to have your coach with you at the frigging Olympics FFS!

PWM will be most pleased to hear that the boat has been slipped and antifouled and will probably have a new skeg bearing installed before she goes back in the water.

He probably won’t be as pleased to hear that I have sent him an invoice for half the cost.

Anyway the reason why I haven’t been online much these last few days, is because I’ve been setting up my new multi monitor x(5) flight simulation cockpit in my study.

There has been a request from a number of parties that a minute’s silence be observed to mark the 40th anniversary of the Munich (Olympics) massacre. But, so far, the IOC has refused to allow that to occur.

“The difference that doping makes is shown by the extraordinary records set at the Seoul Olympic Games of 1988, before testing was fully established. Half of the gold medal winners in Seoul set times and distances that were good enough to win a gold at Athens 20 years later; many will probably also prove to have been good enough to win in London.1

But the majority of the athletes who set these remarkable records were never found guilty of a doping offence, so their records stand. An exception is Ben Johnson, the Canadian sprinter who won the 100 m only to be stripped of the title for using the anabolic steroid stanozolol.”

Ooh ooh I have a Limpix question.

At the opening ceremony, the two major languages used were English and French. English is understandable, but why French? Is it because the Big Wigs of the IOC are French? Because, by number of people who speak it, Mandarin Chinese is the dominant language of the world.

Is it still the diplomatic language?

I recall learning French at high school because it was the most widely spoken language (by number of countries, not number of people) but I’m not sure that’s still true.

But these things are rarely decided by reason.

The modern games was founded by Baron Pierre de Coubertin.

In low dosages, strychnine can act as a stimulant and has been used by athletes to enhance their performance. Strychnine made headlines back in 1904 during the St. Louis Olympics. At that time there were no rules yet about the use of performance enhancing drugs. The American Fred Lorz won the marathon competition but was disqualified just after crossing the finish line because officials learned he had taken a car ride for part of the race.

The next man to finish was the British-born US athlete Thomas Hicks. He won the gold medal but not without a little help. About 10 miles from the finish line Hicks begged his trainers to let him stop running and give-up the race. His trainers refused and gave him a dose of strychnine as a stimulant to keep him going. They also gave him raw egg-white and brandy. As a result Hicks had to be carried across the finish line and it took four doctors to revive him so that he could leave the stadium.

More recently at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, strychnine was used to optimize the athletic performance of a female volleyball player from China. This was Wu Dan and she was actually the first person to test positive for drugs at the Olympics. She tested positive for strychnine despite claiming not having ingested any. The strychnine was contained in capsules that Dan was taking without the knowledge of the team doctor. She took the capsule as a tonic because she was feeling a bit tired. The Olympic committee banned her from any more competition but stated that Dan didn’t intentionally cheat but the mistake was due to poor education.

I’d imagine they have lots of regular volleyballers to choose from, just a matter of making the transition to sand. It’s not like Australia have a monolopy on sand.

Sometimes I wonder if the whole system would work a lot faster if the majority of people could understand that zipping their megabyte picture files acheives nothing, but reducing the file size does. I have just downloaded 20 Megs of zipped mobile phone photos. I am too polite to explain what a friggin waste of bandwidth that was, and how the zipping just added another layer of complexity.

As time goes by, it seems that people simply have no idea at all of file size in relation to the information transferred.

Yep. A friend of mine sends me emails with hundred of photos, all of around one meg in size. I try to encourage file size reduction, but it all falls on deaf ears. When your bandwidth is unrestricted and your speed is massive, who cares if you send 10 or 20 times the information that is needed?

Of course some people are just freakishly good at their chosen sport and it would not be unusual to find more than one freakishly good sports person at the Olympics.. but still.. five seconds?

It wasn’t really a sit in.

There was a protest in progress and under the fencing rules if she’s left the fencing area it would have been all over and the protest dismissed.

Just caught a bit of the swimming on TV, isn’t it about time that “they” invented a new swimming stroke? I used to do a “torpeedo stroke” as a kid, combination of Australian crawl and back stroke, so that the body rotated about it’s long axis as it moved forwards through the water.

I’d hardly think that peeing on a window is vandalising it.. They should arrest all the dogs that walk past.

The Brits don’t have “Blokes”, they have “Gents” or “Chaps”.

I have a couple of mates who’s definition of canoeing is when they crash their formula ford at high speed and suddenly it no longer has wheels, and they are still traveling at high speed in a canoe shaped bit of fibreglass/kevlar.

It’s a great venue, but it’s not a real beach. It’s the Horseguards Parade with some temporary stands and a few truckloads of sand. Still, it’s a bloody good set-up.

Sand is sand, as far as a suitable surface for a sporting contest goes. Whatever advantage or disadvantage it confers over a real beach, it’s the same for both sides.

yeah. It is the same for both sides but the traction is different and the training would have had to have been done to take this into account for some athletes.

well. It depends upon how they look and fit.. but yes the Optometrist wiill fix them for you or the local watchmaker if you know one. Some of the so called cheap shops or whatever.. there are kits for spectacle repair.. Watchmakers supply shops and the likes optometrist supplies, go buy a box full. Otherwise, a cheap pair of magnifying specs can be purchased for $3 to $5 and a screwdriver changes one over.

Nosepads. Yes. We sell them. I expect most optometrists and spectacle shops do. We currently sell the generic ones for $3 each, fitted. Some have teensy tiny screws to hold them in, some are click-in. There are numerous sizes. There are plain acetate ones, silicon ones and some fancy glass ones (rarely used).

So there you go.

Usually not. Screws don’t generally matched. And lots of the cheapies have fixed pads now that you can’t get off. Only the more expensive cheapies have screw in nosepads because you have to minimize your construction time if you are going to sell things that cheaply.

Oh, and morrie….take your glasses in to the shop. If you just come in and ask for nosepads we have no way of knowing which sort fits your glasses, even if you know the brand name. Within a brand they can be different sizes.

yes buffy, that’s why I said depends on how they look and are fitted. Do you realise that for 25 years, I worked next door to an optometrist who was good friend and did have no qualms about allowing the watchmakers next door to do repairs like that. We soldered up the frames and repainted them and all sorts of jobs the optometrist either didn’t want to do or couldn’t.

By the same token I was fixing all the cameras from the camera shop on the other side.

ok to answer my earlier question

“The common method of ranking the success of countries at the Olympic Games is a ranking order based first on the number of gold medals won, then silver and bronze. This method is used by the IOC and most media outlets during the Olympic Games.”

but it could be better

Here are some of the ranking systems that have been devised. A weighted system of some sort seems like the best system, but it is not as simple to implement as either the gold first or total medals method.

gold first method — based first on the number of gold medals, then silver and bronze. Does silver and bronze have no value? total medals — based on the total number of medals (gold, silver and bronze). This method gives equal rating to gold, silver and bronze, which does not seem a fair system. total gold medals — counting all the gold medals won, including counting the medals for each individual athlete in team sports. Improvement Rating — based on percentage improvement from previous Games result. Compared to expectations — there are several groups that forecast or predict the medal won for each country based on factors such as population, GDP and previous performances, at prior Olympics and competitions leading up to the Olympics. Fibonacci weighted point system (3:2:1) — gold 3 points, silver 2 points, and bronze 1 point. Exponential weighted point system (4:2:1) — gold 4 points, silver 2 points, and bronze 1 point. London 1908 weighted point system (5:3:1) — gold 5 points, silver 3 points, and bronze 1 point. LOF weighted point system (5:3:2) — gold 5 points, silver 3 points, and bronze 2 point. Topend Sports weighted point system (6:2:1) — gold 6 points, silver 2 points, and bronze 1 point. per-capita demographic ranking — number of medals is divided by the population of the country. per-GDP demographic ranking — number of medals is divided by the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country.

Yes, the German/Brit cyclist is suspected of falling over on purpose to get a restart. The Dutch swimmer is suspected of doing more than his allowed share of butterfly kicks underwater on the turns.

The confusion is in the translation of the German word Meineersteausschlussiseinegrosseaufladenausscheisse, which alternatively means “I took advantage of a loophole in the rules to unfairly advantage my team” or “team management have slapped me around until I came to the realisation that speaking the truth to the press is frowned upon”. Iran’s Ali Mazaheri has called his disqualification from the heavyweight boxing competition a “conspiracy”.

He had been leading by two points going into the second round before being disqualified for persistent holding.

“It was a fix. I could have got a bronze easily if it hadn’t been for that,” an irate Mazaheri said after walking out of the ring before the decision was officially announced.

I think the one that I remember most was getting buffeted off the trampoline altogether and landing on the ground feet first, I forgot to adjust for gravity and a non-rebounding surface. Whacked my face on my own knee and cut my lip and nose. Lotsa blood for my mate’s Mum to clean up.

Lucky young people have flexible bones. I remember a few incidents on the tramampoline. For a kiddie who is only half a metre tall, (which is about as high as the mat) bouncing and getting some height, getting it wrong is like falling from a second story building.

The Brits looking bruddy good, did their semi-final in near WR time, and holding a bit back.

New Zealand now 10th in the tables, Oz 18th. It would be humiliating were it not for the fact that Kiwis are basically Aussies anyway.

Why is it so humiliating?

Lots of silver medals in lots of disciplines – NZ have all their golds from the one discipline.

Yeah, but they got millions more population than us. I reckon our number of silver versus gold is just a bit of bad luck. Two or three of those close results gone the other way and we’re in the top ten.

Not a big deal to me.

Just posted this in a British forum:

With Britain now in 5th place and Australia 18th, I’m just glad that we Aussies are no longer as sports-mad as the British. Sure, medals are nice, but there is far more to life than sporting prowess and Olympic gold etc. It took us a while to reach this understanding but we’re now all the richer for it, with far more participation in the arts & sciences etc, and a much more relaxed attitude to losing the kid’s games. Expect to have your hand shaken by deep-voiced Aussies congratulating you on your Olympic performance, but don’t feel offended if we then immediately return to the novel, science paper or musical score we’re reading, without bothering to engage in sports banter.

;-)

My prediction was Australia – less than 10 gold medals; Great Britain to score twice as many overall as Aus.

A bit of realistic expectation avoids a whole lot of disappointment, or explaining away and making excuses. Things are just about on track as far as I’m concerned.

I wasn’t being entirely serious, chemicalviking :-)

Australia is having a crappy Olympics, with even the Kiwis way ahead of us. It’s still fun to watch bits of it on the telly, though. Congratulations to your athletes for making it a memorable one for Britain.

Gold to GBR, silver to AUS in the track cycling.

Much as I was expecting, the poms are outclassing us in our favoured events, rowing; horsey stuff, cycling.

AUS been unlucky in the swimming.

I tell ya what I liked is the event called the Omni, it comprises a stack of cycling events over a couple of days and the one with the least points at the end wins, if you win an event you get one point, two points for coming second etc.

One of the events last night was the elimation event where the person who crosses the line last every couple of laps gets elimated until there are two left.
It’s terrific because suppose they don’t like a bloke, lets call him Barry, well they can put up a wall of riders in front of Barry and he cant get through so Barry is going down man.

We again did well overnight and collected another 3 silver medals.

Mens 4 rowing, Womens medlay relay swimming and Mitchell Watt in the mens longjump.

Current medal tally has us as fourth in a tight race.

China leads with 16 silvers
Russia has 15
USA 13
Australia 12
Next is Japan and Germany with 10.
NZ 0

I reckon the last 4 years were unusual cirmcumstances. Things are going back to normal, well, at least how I remember Olympic Games when I was growing up.

Ah, so it’s normal for New Zealand to be 10 places ahead of Australia.

They’ve beaten us before. They tend to concentrate their efforts on a few sports they are really good at, they don’t send several hundred athletes to have a go at everything.

I think it’s also a case of other countries now devoting as much funding as Australia does to our programs for up and coming athletes. It’s funding from the national lottery that has boosted GB’s medal haul.

There is much talk that the track at the Olympic stadium is very fast. What would be causing this? Extra bounce?

Athletes love having a packed stadium for both morning and evening sessions, crowds at morning sessions at past olympics have been sparce.

The thing is that from three or four metres, if you land wrongly you’ll get a big water slap and that really stings.. land wrongly from 10 m and you could cause severe injury.

Hmm I didn’t know he was “like that”.

Withdraw my previous praise, but I still hate William & Kate.

that infamous comment came out a few years ago and was to do with the treatment of animals for entertainment, the fur trade and food – he’s a well known vegan / animal rights campaigner among his many talents..

– he’s great for a reaction.

I dunno, for your average office worker doing a jog around the park it may not be beneficial. For an olympian putting in max effort in events and training an 8 hour day? You sweat a lot you lose a slot of salt, I remember my boots and the back of shirts with streaks of white from dried salt. The sachets of cordial you get in ration packs contain replacement salts for that reason.

I wouldn’t mind swapping the Olympics for a Tour de Russia bicycle race, with a load of riders I’ve never heard of, preferably female.

I was just reading on another forum. 100,000 free condoms in the athletes village. Around 10,000 athletes there, using one between two that works out to about 20 times for each athlete. Given then, that a fair few would choose to refrain from debauchery, it lifts the figure for individuals that do.

What event can I start training for?

It’s all over at Weymouth and Portland in the men’s 49er, with New Zealand’s crew of Peter Burling and Blair Tuke coming home second to secure silver with Denmark hot on their heels in the bronze medal position. Austria’s crew actually crossed the line first but they needed a larger margin of victory over the Danes to steal bronze. Of course, the most important thing is that Australia’s Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen safely crossed the line to make it official – they’re the Olympic men’s 49er champions!

Lovely part of the world though with a big diversity of bird life, including the resident swans and you get arctic geese stoping over ther for a month or so during their migratory flight.

So what’s on the Limpix at this very moment? Should I bother to turn on the telebision?

Bear in mind I’m in a nicely mellow frame of mind and have been looking through photo albums of Norman church doorways and 19th century industrial architecture while listening to a compilation of my favourite slow movements from various string quartets.

Yeah. My gut reaction is not to allow him to compete because it’s so hard to draw the line between where there is an assistance and where there is a handicap from these artificial limbs.. But it’s been discussed and debated by many heads far wiser than me – they have decided to allow it to go ahead.
