It covers up the fact that they have NFI what they’re talking about. They’re put on the spot, have to think quickly, and saying things like so, and, um, uh gives them a second more to formulate their response.
Plus they’ve seen that it works for others, so figure it may work for them too.
>>Plus they’ve seen that it works for others
So basically you are saying that it is a copy cat reply mechanism, basically.

It’s called journalism.
its being going on for years
in an ABC interview one day a few years ago they were interviewing some chick who’s a scientist
i must have counted “basically” around 30 times in 2 minutes
it was horrible
nowadays “basically” has been superseded by “pretty”
Anyone else noticed that ‘have a different view’ seems to be gaining popularity?
So basically everyone has a different view.
i shake my head when i hear around 50 percent of the population speak
it think its just laziness
maybe the “joker” of colorado was a grammar nazi
i think its appalling that people can’t watch gratuitous violence safely these days
who would have ever thought that free access of weapons to any old fool could cause so much havoc?
the problem is that the weapons problem is entrenched in america now
the criminals have so many weapons it wouldn’t be practical to stop the flow now.
its unusual that you’d take a 6 year old child to a midnight showing of a violent film
when you start breaking down the components eh??….
i’ve seen a child at the last ‘rambo” that someone persuaded me to see
the child was covering its eyes and the parent was removing them

Bit drastic, removing the kid’s eyes, don’t you think?

A thing that I notice with talk back radio is that callers always begin with ‘how are you going?’ or something similar. The poor announcer has to answer that question for every call. It must drive them nuts after a while.

So, basically, what the production staff – who answer the talkback lines and get the details about the callers – do, is to ask the callers not to ask how the announcer is, but to launch straight into whatever it was they were calling about. This works for the first caller or two, then they forget the instructions and ask the presenter how they are, followed by “oops, I wasn’t meant to ask that … “
