it sounds like a grand topis but not much is happening in the garden – apart from the first flush of weeds.
celery and onion seedlings, toms in pots, the garden and its weeds.

looks good pepe
although the winter garden is just starting – the autumn harvest is not too bad.
kale, beans, cuey, pumpkin and sweet potatoes. just add onions, herbs and spuds and you’ve got dinner.

I bought twelve indigenous (to this area) native understorey plants. They are ground covers and small shrubs so I will pot them up for a month while i weed a large area to plant them in. I’ll have to hoe the ground at least twice judging by the amount of weed germinating we are getting after rain.

slow – the trees were planted two years ago.
now for the understorey.
we hope to attract the 7 types of local bats and get the bearded dragon living there again.

compared to whom? (have you seen your place thru my eyes?)
this will be a scrappy looking bushland. its main purpose is to
- provide firewood
- provide habitat, biodiversity and hopefully some more wildlife.
its not quite ‘plant and forget’ but not a lot of maintenance – i hope.

no – shouldn’t be too much work – i hope.
i keep thinking if the original owners had done this thirty years ago i would be walking thru native bushland now.
yeah pink gums ( e. facsiculosa) are classics.

That’s a pretty large project there Pepe. I’ll look forward to seeing the end results. When I get to Adelaide next time I might just come and see your plot in person. Just to make sure your on the right track. LOL.

You might’nt have a choice. I might just land on your doorstep. Might be very soon as well. I’ll be in contact through Lucky1 anyway.
I’m only joking really but I might be down there soon just the same.

not a good photo – but my pincushion hakea (laurina) has put on its first flower. not bad after surviving two drought years under pine trees.

pincushion hakea in focus, our first ‘japanese seedless’ mandy is big and beautiful, citrus topdressed with chicken manure.

My mandarine’s are quite big, but stil green. I’m not sure when they should colour up.

the picture is an orange but its the same size as the mandy tree.
your orange tree is a nice size and i do suspect the sheep manure has converted to soil. no harm done tho’ and nice detective work to sniff it out.

Converted to soil eh..ok.
I shall try to go lightly next mulch.
I still have a way to go down before I even see any surface root’s though, and it will get some worm wee.
The problem is that now it will be much lower than the other 2 citrus, but it was the first thing I planted when we moved in over 20 year’s ago now. I added soil way back then too as the block has the slightest slope and I levelled the back with about 20 meter’s of loam.

the tree is going well so not much is wrong. i’m not sure how it can be drained if its in the lowest spot in the garden.

maybe a top dressing of gypsum once or twice a year will help.

I will ask at the nursery for the solution to that , but I thought some drainage around it will be first on the list. And I still have that 30 mt long length of pipe the plumber left, so I’ll work on using that.

very pretty…lovely pink tones:)
I hoed out about 50 horehound weeds that had grown in my one acre paddock. then i saw the icecream container full of celery seedlings that needed potting up – so i planted them in the paddock where the horehound had been.
Now i’m thinking i will plant bok choy and amaranthus in the paddock too – chopping out weeds and planting in the hole. The paddock is dominated by soursob and soursob are utterly useless for composting. If you piled a heap of soursob up, the size of a mountain, and came back next year, there would be absolutely nothing there.
thus begins another longterm project…..
sounds good pepe
soursob spread like crazy on infertile soil. cut them down before they set seed, which will weaken them, and fertilize.

i hope so veg. i might raise some lucerne seed and plant them out as seedlings too.
how was the open garden?

too late – this place has been occupied for nearly forty years by non-gardeners – thus soursobs are endemic.
my best bet is to provide competition.
