i’m going to be in melb in jan and will need to use public transport.

what is this MYKI thing and what would be the best one to get? any melbournites that can give some advice. i’ve had a look at the website but don’t understand the zone stuff. been ages since i used public transport.

When you get to melbourne, you’ll most likely need to make your way to Southern Cross station and purchase a Myki from the office there ($6, $3 if you have a concession card of some description) and then you’ll need to go to the machine and put some money on it (lots of staff available to assist you).

Alternatively (if you don’t have concession), i have a “spare” Myki from when my mum came and visted.

i’ll be going to southern cross from the airport. so it cost $6 plus your fare? or does the $6 cover a fare also?

The $6 is just for the card itself. You then pay additional for your fare.

And don’t worry Boris- I still don’t understand the zone system and I’ve lived in Brisbane (which also uses it) for 5 years.

yup, does the trains, buses and trams…

It’s got a “thing” in it, and you touch it up against the reader and it beeps at you. When you’re done you touch again, and it beeps at you again and takes some money. The thing with Myki is that it’s supposed to deduct the lowest fair applicable to your journey…

that’s ages away…

the % drop as you get older. so for me it is like tomorrow.

anyway, I found Melbourne Public transport to be easy peasy. Even the hook turns and middle of the road trams… crazy, but easy.

yep, the public transport is good in melb. i grew up there and loved the trams. hook turns are sensible because of the trams.
