Subject: Messerschmitt Me 262

At the end of the last century I spent sometime working at Government Aircraft Factories at Fishermans Bend Melbourne, they had a Messerschmitt Me 262 aircraft which was complete, ie all the parts were there, but the wings were off the fuselage and the engines were off the wings, I used to visit it frequently and run my hands over it and marvel at how advanced it was for it’s time. Iwas down that way recently and GAF as I knew it was no more, so where did the 262 go to, does anyone know?

Australian War Memorial I’d guess.

ANZAC Hall is a large annex to the upper level of the memorial, used for the display of large military hardware. Notable displays on the Western side include a complete and particularly historic Lancaster bomber known as G for George, a Japanese Ko-hyoteki class midget submarine sunk during a raid on Sydney Harbour in 1942, rare German aircraft such as the Me 262 and Me 163, and a restored Japanese A6M Zero, that was flown in combat over New Guinea.”

poikilotherm, thankyou, sounds like that’s where it is now. Just around the corner from GAF where it lived for a long time, was ARL, and it had an F86 Sabre jet as a gate guardian, I got to sit in it as well. I believe there is a guy in the USA fitting out old Me262s with Garret engines to keep ‘em flying, and somebody else making Me262 replicas again with Garret engines.

poikilotherm, here is a film clip of a 262 replica, the first 9 minutes is of engine run up, the rest is a bit boreing too, especially the pesky little chase A/C.
