A PERTH science luminary is the recipient of the 2012 national Pearcey award for his contribution to the growth and development of the internet industry in Australia.
Awarded last week, the prestigious information and technology award was presented to Dr Mal Bryce for recognition of his distinguished lifetime achievement within the Information and communications (ICT) industry.
The Pearcey Medal honours Australia’s leading innovators and achievers within the ICT industry.
Dr Bryce has been a leading pioneer of the Australian ICT industry since the late 1970s and was the architect behind Australia’s first online enabled communities in Ipswich, Queensland in 1993.
His career as a company director, senior consultant and cabinet minister in the last 40 years, has allowed him to develop companies and public policy to harness the power of new technology.
Dr Bryce says he is deeply honoured and grateful for being granted an opportunity to contribute to the ICT industry, which he believes has changed the world.
“The ICT industry is about 30 years old and in the next 30 years, a range of very exciting developments are about to happen. These include super high-speed broadband infrastructure, the devolution of Cloud computing and supercomputing, and a great explosion in the number of devices and applications for computing services.”
Currently, Dr Bryce is the chairman of the Pawsey supercomputing project, where he has a heavy involvement in developing the supercomputing and eResearch infrastructure components of the Australian ICT sector.
Upon commissioning in 2013, The Pawsey Centre will be one of Australia’s most sophisticated supercomputing facilities.
It will provide support for the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder and Murchison Widefield Array radio astronomy projects, as well as internationally significant projects in disciplines such as nanotechnology and the geosciences.
In 2002, Dr Bryce was honoured with the title of ‘WAITTA Achiever of the Year’ after being presented the WA, IT and Telecommunications Award.
The Pearcey Foundation of Australia presents this away in memory of Dr Trevor Pearcey, one of Australia’s greatest pioneers of the ICT industry
Held in Melbourne on August 9, the 2012 iAwards was attended by special guests such as Stephen Conroy, Minister for Broadband Communications and the Digital Economy and Gordon Rich-Phillips, Victorian Minister for Technology, as well as over 800 industry leaders across the country.
