The woman has spent her life being groomed for this role. Her father used to pull her out of school for weeks so she could be dragged around the mines and learn the business. She’s had to be hard from the start. Unfortunately, for her, she’s a woman – noone ever said that Lang was unhappy because he was fat.
So pick on someone for their ultra conservative views, pick on her because she is an GW denier nutter or because she says stupid things or because she has more money than you, or because she’s a raving hypocrite and thinks that noone remembers her in the early 90’s in Perth nightclub scene…

Hmm. She also said this:
“In her regular column in Australian Resources and Investment magazine, she warns that Australia risks heading down the same path as European economies ruined by “socialist” policies, high taxes and excessive regulation.”
I was under the impression that it was deregulation that stuffed the world economy by allowing bankers to do what they wanted regardless of the consequences.
plus if non-socialist policies are so good then USA would be going gang busters and china would be a basket case. or is that too simplistic?

To approach the question from a physiology point of view, it’s very likely that Gina could not be ‘made fit’ by any normal method, but rather a combination of treatment methods that would require input from most of the health sciences and a lot of patience.
Perhaps one in ten thousand persons could, by modifications of diet and exercise only, bring themselves to a ‘normal’ level of fitness.

I also make the point that workers in large export industries like mining and energy are unlikely to be on the minimum wage anyway. People on minimum wages tend to be domestic-focused industrries like retail and carers, or students trying to balance part-time work with full-time study. Cutting minimum wages and penalty rates would hurt these workers while doing nothing to make our resoruces industries more competitive.
I don’t think she has a valid point to make on wages. She is mouthing off out-dated political ideology inherited from her father in the 1970s, which are well out of date and well outside the reality of today’s labour market.
I agree with mr pants and add that a lot of minimum wage earners are persons born overseas.
Clarify, what is ‘minimum wage’? Is it the lowest award available? If so, for what industry?
Minimum wage is different to award- you can be paid below award as long as it is above min. wage.
There’s more stuff here:

It said what I needed. It’s the minimum you can pay if the employee isn’t covered by an Award or Agreement.
But then there’s this:
http://www.fairwork.gov.au/faqs/pay/pages/default.aspx
You can agree to be paid less than award, as long as it’s above minimum wage (and a bunch of other stuff).
Yea, I looked at the website then realised I wasn’t that interested.
A quick look at the Mundi Index reveals the most probably cause of Ms. Reinhart’s concerns.
It’s desperate stuff, this mining game, and don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.
For those who can’t see the graph, it shows the Iron Ore price rising by 1600% over the 8 years to Aug 2011, but dropping to a mere 1000% (above the original) in Aug 2012.

Brazil have two large iron ore projects underway, one of which will be producing 90 million tonnes per year. Africa have at least one large mine under development. It depends on how demand varies, but there will be more competition in the marketplace in the future.
Wonder who will buy all this with economic slow downs in most other countries, including the one that buys ours.

This may be true, but I can’t see how it translates to an argument for lowering the minimum wage in Australia. It is highly unlikely that any worker Australian worker in the mining, energy or construction industries would be earning only the minimum wage. Cutting the minimum wage for check-out chicks in the outer suburbs stupormarkets isn’t going to help us compete against mines in Brazil or Africa. Unless Gina has taken inspiration from recent events in South Africa for a new relationship with striking mine workers.

Really?
The Air Safety Transport Bureau (ATSB) says there’s so far no sign that structural failure played a part in a fatal plane crash south of Broome’s Cable Beach.
A twin-engine Piper Seneca owned by Golden Eagle Airlines crashed in sand dunes about two kilometres south of the West Australian tourist destination shortly after take-off last month, killing pilot Adam Gaffney, 27, who was engaged to be married.
GPS data showed the plane cleared a highway at the end of the runway and flew over beach dunes before turning back.
“Damage to the wreckage was consistent with the aircraft descending steeply into terrain at relatively low forward speed and a high rate of descent,” the ATSB said in a report on Friday.
“There was no evidence of in-flight structural failure.”
The weather was fine and refuelling records indicated the plane had enough fuel.
The pilot was experienced, having clocked up 922 hours in total including about 210 hours of night flying.
The investigation will include an examination of recovered components and maintenance records, analysis of aircraft performance during the flight and a review of other operational factors and the recorded data.
ATSB spokesman Joe Hattley last month said the probe was likely to take about 12 months.

Only in shared powers.
Mining magnates are like the Pharaohs of old. But rather than trying to build pyramids bigger than each other, they try to dig bigger holes in the ground in a game of one-upmanship. Gina likes to send the other magnates emails at 3.00am in the morning saying “you should see the size of my hole now”

It’s what she’s been quoted as saying. I haven’t been able to watch the whole thing for myself yet.
The closest I can get to the source of the quote is her saying that Australia is becoming too expensive to compete in export orientated business.

i hope the quote is more accurate than the spelling of her name
the part that got me curious more than the African wages thing, is that she wants a special economic zone in northern Aus – a place where tax is lower and there is less environmental regulation. Just happens her mining interests are conveniently located there.

The 30 second mark is where I think they extrapolate her comments to the extreme of the headlines.
I work with a lot of these 407 visa guys, they are experienced workers who are here because we don’t have the required skills locally. They work for far more than $2 per day.
I’ve just listened to the whole thing, and the silly bint does say it. At about 8:40 into the video.
The other thing I had to laugh at was that she suggested that the West Africa miners could supply iron ore at $100 less than Australian miners could. With the current ore price at about $130, I suspect she may be telling a porky.
The Worst reports it like this:
Ms Rinehart later went on to say: “Business as usual will not do. Not when West African competitors can offer our biggest customers an average capital cost for a tonne of iron ore that’s $100 under the price offered by an emerging producer in the Pilbara.
“Furthermore, Africans want to work and its workers are willing to work for less than $2 per day.”

Just listened to the whole thing – she does seem to have an agenda, doesn’t she…

The spin doctors will be coming out of the woodwork:
Blah Blah Blah.
She’ll get an absolute shellacking for this and it will be richly deserved.

Considering it was a video she scripted, produced, and edited, I don’t think there’s much ground she can reclaim.

There is no doubt, as I have mentioned quite a few times, that the iron ore market is opening up. First Brazil, then Africa are coming onstream with capacity that will compete with us.

Brazil has been a competitor for yonks. Their main disadvantage is how far the ore need to be transported. West african mines will have the same issue.

You’d expect those countries to suffer from “Dutch Disease” too and their currencies would rise. There’s also a chance their workers will organise and agitate for a greater share of the wealth extracted from minerals, and that left-leaning governments would impose higher taxes on mining activity.
How’s coal going?
still in the black.

That’s good. Because you’re going to have to bite on tighter than a male parasitic angler fish and jostle with Tony RabBiT for prime position on her arse.

Rudyard always a good browse.
If your officer’s dead and the sergeants look white,
Remember it’s ruin to run from a fight:
So take open order, lie down, and sit tight,
And wait for supports like a soldier.
Wait, wait, wait like a soldier . . .
When you’re wounded and left on Afghanistan’s plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An’ go to your Gawd like a soldier.
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
So-oldier of the Queen!

Would’ve thought arse real estate would be oversupplied in her case. An arse housing bubble.

It seems she wrote her own speech, Ann Romney did not. I can’t supply authenticated references for that…right now.

Condalezza Rice is an admirable character – but reality overtook her political theory.
Great, we have the Tweedledee and Tweedledum dudes playing around where the adults are trying to talk.

The sad thing is that I will be working on one of her mines soon. Lucky I am a contractor and not on her payroll.
Make sure you spend lots of time beer drinking, I hear she likes workers doing that.
