piccies and story on a turtle rescue centre in Kweesnland..

A short ferry ride across Gladstone Harbour in central Queensland takes you to Quoin Island, a small privately owned piece of paradise. It’s home to the Quoin Island Turtle Rehabilitation Centre and part of the rehab includes plenty of tickles and massages that the turtles just love. Owner Bob McCosker says when the turtles first arrive at the centre they’re given a fresh water bath to get rid of any parasites or barnacles that have attached themselves to the animals.

“I guess being in Gladstone at the moment where there’s a perception that we have a huge issue with our harbour but the reality is none of our recent animals are even coming from Gladstone,” says Bob. He says the turtles have come from Yeppoon, Rosslyn Bay, Carmila and Agnes Waters. “They’re basically all what we call floaters so they can’t dive and hence they can’t eat so they’re doomed to generally die in the ocean,” says Bob. Awareness is growing and people on the water are now bringing in sick or injured turtles when they see them.

The centre has nursed back to health 18 green turtles so far.
