minimum of zero, currently 4.5, expected top of 12C. Sun is out though, hey, but?
always know when it is warming up when the Cold water tap is hotter than the Hot water one…

We had 3c again this morning and another tomorrow. No rain but the main part of the days is warm and sunny. It’s definately time freezings temps left us till next year.

Still chilly up the road from there. It does look as though the minimums may be rising according to BoM.
Like Trichome we need rain and soon.
23C expected, but the minumums are still low. Love the sunny days though.
gorgeous day today.
temps are gradually climbing but rain forecast for the next few days.

got to over 20C today :)
It got to 24C here today and it was a beautiful day. I got tons done out the front filling in the huge craters from the cordyline excavation with many bags of compost. Hubby and my gardening mate went to get the old fence palings and proceeded to cut them into lengths to cover the filing cabinet planters and they’re making the dust bathing box and a 3 tiered strawberry frame. Work stopped now for tea, and a beer, and will continue in the morn.
another sunny day to 23, and they tell me there might be a blue moon this month :)
we need rain

Ummm what do you mean by “there might be” a blue moon? I was always lead to believe that when a second full moon appears in a calendar month, then that second one was referred to as a “blue moon”. So by that definition, one should be able to accurately call it a blue moon many months in advance.
Does your definition differ?
It’s a bit windy, could blow the sugar out of ya tea. No need to brush my hair today. I’ve battened down, but still getting debris blowing in from elsewhere. I saw a bin rolling down the road.
Temp got to 28 yesterday. I could almost say I was hot.

no differing, just didn’t know much about this blue moon, thanks for the definition :)
Oh and we missed it. Aug 31st was the date of the second full moon for the month of April. Unless Australian Astronomers say the full moon fell on the 1st of September?

Just checked, the Australian Full Moon Calendar says the full moon occurred on Aug 31st at 23:58.
Well spring started well here, but the Wind Gods are really out to party at the moment. They started more than 24 hours ago, kept me awake last night, and now they’ve moved around from the North to the North West, just to try out the branches on a different part of the trees. While we were at archery in the big sheep pavilion at the Hamilton Showgrounds tonight the hearty gusts sounded just like someone starting at one end of the roof and running hell for leather the length of the building in hobnailed boots. Interesting. But worrying. No real damage here so far. Medium branch down last night. We’ll see what firewood they pull off tonight.
Lucky I don’t wear a hat, I would have lost it. Lots of wind damage about town, trees down and roofs off sheds and pergolas and some streets without power. No damage at my place thankfully, we reinforced shed and chicken coop roofs in time with angle iron and bolts. The silkies had trouble trying to stay at their food bowl so I shut them all in for the day. I was watching the huge cabbage tree trunk swaying wildly. I had heat packs ready for the incubator had the power gone out here. The ones that you press a disc and it’s instant heat.
It’s worse in the outer suburbs and country districts though. I hope there’s been no loss of life or injuries.painmaster said:

It was a great moon for whitening your linen…just saying… if you had the nice green grass to lay it on…

I heard this morning just how bad those winds were. Trees down, roofs flying through the air. Almost like a tornado without the rain.
We had a milder night here and the day has started out to be brilliant. Still a bit desperate for rain though.
I’ve been down to pick some of the last of the snap peas but the King Parrots beat me to it. I’ll have to get up earlier. lol.
Also got to pick a few broad beans. Gosh they are had to see in amongst all that green. I’ve been advised to pick the first of the crop while they’re young because soon enough there will be too many to be able to eat them all. We shall see.

I blanched, skinned and froze my excess last year. Worked well.
the wind hit here last night. I had just gone to bed and was playing with my ipod touch when the power went out, then on again, then off again, then on again, then off again…. you get the picture. I got fed up with the light flicking on and off and my mobile on charge beeping each time so turned it all off and tried to get to sleep. Somewhat unsuccessfully as the nights are not so cold now and I was overheating under the winter doona but still too cold to throw it off. Time to get the summer one out.

Thread well and truly Hi-jacked and Spring is only 6 days old….
sunny, windy, 14-24, rain? maybe second half of this month
wind when I went to bed, rain when I woke up. 8mm
The flowers are saying it’s spring and now the weather is agreeing. At last!
even though we have had nearly 2m (1607.2mm) of rain so far this year we a screaming for more, it’s dry
The hemispheric long wave pattern has been relatively fast moving in recent weeks. There are five main troughs. Currently the most significant troughs are near the longitudes of South Africa, the Indian Ocean, New Zealand, the southeast Pacific, and South America.
Summary:
Over southern and eastern Australia the cold front events with potential to bring widespread rain are now expected about 16 September to 20 September, 25 September to 29 September, and 11 October to 15 October. Rain events originating in the tropics and moving south are possible about 27 September to 1 October, 2 October to 6 October, and 7 October to 11 October.
Over Western Australia the strongest cold fronts should occur about 11 September to 15 September, 15 September to 19 September, and 19 September to 23 September.

Huh? The difference between 1.6 and 2 is 20% which is substantial. Have you had 2m or not?
Have you had 2m or not?
…..
listen i am not going to bow down to pressure questions like that, i find this forum is where we can take it easy,
400mm short of 2m, pfft, we can have that sort of rain easy here but in a few months time
was trying to chat saying that we can have stacks of rain here, yet at times in the year it gets very dry, where watering is necessary for gardens, yet in other parts of the country it is dry as a norm and watering is a more constant thing
The sky is full of tantalising grey clouds out there. There not about to give us any relief though, according to BoM. The area has been covered in smoke haze for a couple of days. The fire isn’t around here though. I heard that Stradbroke Island is abaze so that could be the reason.
Please send us some rain soon.
currently cool (7.7C) but sunny and might get to 20C

good answer – i know just what you mean – or rather – i haven’t a clue what normal is – which is surprising after 62 years on the planet….

It was back down to single digits last night. I’m not laughing either. Days are lovely except for the dryness. Been a lot of wind too.

we had a down pour for 5 minutes, dust is settled, we need some more to green things up :)
We have had a couple of nasty storms go through the area. Still not much rain (yesterdays only produced 2.5mls) but probably enough to dampen down where fires might be a problem. No more rain expected till the weekend according to our man Livio. The wind that’s coming with these storms has been fierce. Makes me glad we don’t live on top of one of the surrounding hills. There are times when it’s really hot that I wish we had been on one of those hills to catch any breeze but not after the last couple of days though.

We got a shower of rain last night, brought very welcome coolness…need the rain to hold off until 5 pm Saturday and then it can rain for a week…however most farmers are ready to take their winter wheat off so the harvesters will be brmm-brmming at the paddock gates I should imagine…
Looking at the weather maps it looks like rain should form up for the easterners by the weekend. Listening outside my window.. I hear the rain birds singing. Now if you are familiar with black faced cuckoo-shrikes then you’ll be aware that they rarely sing. Australian folklore makes them known as the rain birds because they have a tendency to sing in dry periods just before the rain comes. Noticeable because most of the time.. they are a bird that may be seen but not heard.

While we have black faced Cuckoo Shrikes, they are not the harbingers of rain up here. Our rain birds, or more commonly known, our Storm Birds are the Common Koel and these have been active in my garden of late.

2 showers of rain yesterday, each contain 1mm. That doubles our rainfall total for August and September.

well Hobart struggled to 24ºC but Darwin was warmer at 32ºC… Although both Sydney and Melbourne came very close behind Darwin.
I did notice that the nearest BOM site to you that I guess, did make it to 33ºC but my original comment was in reference to Capital Cities… although I still do not call Darwin a Capital.
Although picking two random locations, one being Normanton, which made it to 35ºC and Fitzroy Crossing which is still 37.5ºC…

Town had 6.5 mm or where the official rain gauges are did. Scattered showers of rather intense nature would mean that some got perhaps quite a bit more, others perhaps none.
Udder’alf said we got 21 mm here, I said, no. I had a sprinkler going there last night.
2mm rain here and cold, but not as cold as yesterday.
Well we got some rain but now we have the cold wind happening. Won’t take long to dry up those 16mls. It was nice to wake this morning and see everything sparkling and damp though.

Moderate solar flare activity. Minor coronal hole effects in progress. Strong solar wind. Geomagnetic conditions at unsettled levels with isolated active periods. Short-wave radio fadeouts possible. High-frequency radio communications fair to normal.
So now we know, we’ve been told! lol

move to Central Qld. Drove from Longy to Dinetta today and beyond and dealt with 31ºC to 35ºC all the way. Oh hang on, it was 14ºC out on the Muttaburrasaurus Highway this morn at sparrow’s fart.
Wow I had to go so far back to find this thread…
It’s gone all “spring-y” here with very cooling ESE blowing.

well Pom, and Din, send some down here if you like, far too dry for my liking here at the moment, we have had a few showers but need good rain.

20.5˚C here. By the way I was running up in the rain and emptying while having a couple of beers.. so I didn’t measure accurately but I do have more than one rain gauge the one that’s 2 m off the ground read 131 mm.
still 24ºC here.
mostly sunny today and top of 25. Currently 15. Nice :)
Very cloudy here, about 80% I would say. ‘Twill make it easier to slip down to the laundromat shortly.

we’ve had a good drop of rain, and still coming, that should green the landscape after the long winter/spring brownness,
We have had a couple of middling showers, enough to green up the burn-backs and the lawns…75% overcast and quite cool…

(You have noted before that my kitchen scales are electronic, haven’t you?)
on monday 5th 150,000 lightning strikes were recorded in adelaide – how do they count that many?
apparently they can count lightning strikes electronically.
a hit sends out electronic ripples and is picked up by 2 recording points – timing measures distance – satelite locates
i’m none the wiser but that’s the official guff.

The natural soil here(on this older coral reef amongst less ancient mudflats) was covered with red iron rich sands which blew away in the 1930’s, due to clearing the Mallee. Below which is basically calcrete sealed by hydrophobic pink clay which if dug over and exposed, turns white. pH can be very alkaline indeed. Low spots are crusted with salt.
32C today at 14:00 hours
37C just now (17:36 hours)…need to set up a bed under the house…
33.5C…temp is dropping…I thought more birds would come and enjoy my sprinkler but there must be more fun to be had elsewhere, I think…
I have been keeping an eye on the BOM satellite maps (the 4 day forecast ones), and if those lows join up from low down in SW WA, curve all the way around the coast, across the Top End and back down along the eastern seaboard, we will have a low pressure system so similar to the one that existed for weeks before and during the 2010 – 2011 floods as makes no difference…
I did read on the BOM some weeks ago (pretty sure it was the BOM), that the El Nino forecast for this year quite suddenly became a La Nina outlook…boffins were surprised just how quickly it turned around…

Spot on Dinetta, it is when the two troughs meet and form a giant arc across from WA through the Territory and down the eastern seaboard that we get good rains from Mackay to Towntown.
hot hot hot northeast wind.
ihave decided to plant – corn, beans and pumpkin where my spud crop is almost harvested.
- also to slash my last broad beans – and plant roma toms and sweet basil there.
a bit hot at present but both lots of soil are good and rain is forecast.

We seem to have a constant smoke haze since Sunday.
The temp on the kitchen scales is a balmy 29.5C. Downstairs would be cooler of course but downstairs is short on power points and I need those for my work, or more particularly, what I do to stay out of trouble…
I was just about to shut down the laptop last night when a flash caught my eye, I went to regard the horizon and nothing happened until I turned my head to come back inside…lightning…so I took all the chookens down to their “proper” roost, they’ve become resigned to this, poor things. calculate what 1 mm of rainfall is on one hectare. divide or multiply by the area you want to keep watered and cost how much it would cost to give your garden 1 mm of water per week @ whatever your water supply costs are..

32.1C and 20% rel humidity. The air is so dry and the heat so sudden that everythings wilting. Sprinkler time methinks.
We are around the 30 mark and around 30% humidity…..although a pretendy ‘shower’ had a bit of a try about half an hour ago. I sprinklered and hosed this morning and I’ll shortly head out and do the rounds again. If we are lucky there might be a bit of pretendy ‘rain’ late tomorrow!
Oh, the pretendy ‘showers’ have become more tardy and are now on the Monday forecast. I really had better do some watering tonight and tomorrow morning.
22.8 and 70% humidity, probably wont rain soon
Woohoo some bigger droplets now, after an hour of that pretend rain.
was a hot day here, and an even hotter one forecast for tomorrow. Actually I wasn’t here for most of the day as I hopped on my bike and went to Seymour for a BBQ. It was hot there too though.

In PNG they call it Giaman Rain… in the Torres Strait, it is called Mango Rain.
The hemispheric long wave pattern has remained stable in recent weeks. There are five main troughs. Currently the most significant troughs are near the longitudes of South Africa, the southwest Indian Ocean, eastern Australia, New Zealand, and South America.
Summary:
Over southern and eastern Australia the cold front events with potential to bring widespread rain are now expected about 29 November to 3 December, 9 December to 13 December, and 27 December to 31 December. Rain events originating in the tropics and moving south are possible about 29 November to 3 December, 17 December to 21 December, and 21 December to 25 December.
Over Western Australia the strongest cold fronts should occur about 29 November to 3 December, 9 December to 13 December, and 24 December to 28 December.

It’s a very pleasant 20ish degrees here and around 60% humidity. Had a lovely lunch with staff and hangers on. Then a wander around town with them and they have gone home. Now trying out the new washing machine on a different cycle and different loading pattern from what is recommended because it seems to be extremely good at tangling up the bigger items.
Plenty of breeze and solar power out there today, the towels should be dry in half an hour or so from hanging out.

Poor buggers home now but red faced from the heat and cross about what happened. They’re new cranes and, supposedly, technologically advanced.

more to go wrong! You don’t want to be stuck in the cabin of anything today without airconditioning! It’s hot enough to cook a chook outside :(
Fortunately mine seem to be coping, if stressed. Gave them some ice earlier, but it’s all melted now and it is still ridiculously hot.

So, the second crane incident in a week. Hope he’s cooling off with a quiet beer.

His words to HO were a little more colourful and he told them he’ll only drive the old ones and not the new ‘pizza oven’ ones, ever again. He doesn’t drink full stop..but the gift of a cold watermelon waiting got me a big hug :D
Me on the other hand, will be having a cold coopers this evening with ‘First Friend’ Max on the swing seat. I got a teensy bit red faced keeping outside animals cool. Each of the 2 chook pens got a frozen lump of mince meat, kept for the purpose, and cooled water and a hosing. They loved it.
Quick way to cool down overheated chickens is to give them a can of cold creamed corn from the fridge.

I wanna come back in the next life as a chook living at my place…

I reckon! lol!
the creamed corn is a good trick. Not sure I can afford to keep mine in minced meat Icy Poles yet ;)
I had frozen a 2 litre ice cream container of water about 2/3rds full and topped it up with water for the chicks to drink from. I was surprised how long the ice lasted. I am going to have to buy myself more icecream so I have a good supply of containers this summer, lol!

Yes! lol. I keep PET bottles and fill and freeze and sit whole, aka ice packs, in the chooks water container. It seems to stay frozen longer. I give them a wash over and re freeze.
39C currently and I’m supposed to go do a little grocery shopping. I don’t think so.

I’ve done that in the past, but I don’t have any soft drink bottles now as I don’t buy any, and I am not going to either!

11 AM., 39˚C @ Hay. This means that since we have passed yesterday’s maximum already, it looks like a hot one. http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDN60801/IDN60801.94702.shtml
wow! that looks hot alright.

Hope he got the air con on.
Be gone early in the morning. More medical but it’s on the Sunshine Coast so should be quite pleasant. Might even manage lunch on the beach somewhere.
Stay cool all you Southeners.
still hot here. 31.5 @ 8.40pm. Minimum of 25 tonight. Yuck. Hate hot nights. Think the aircon is going to stay on tonight.

Gees, you must be feeling like a pin cushion. Take care.
Cooler here now that it’s a sane 26C. But it’s going to stay there all night so the bedroom air con will be on.

I’ll see if I have any spares to bring with me. Ice cream containers too.

thanks. although it occured to me that I have a heap of take-away containers that I could use, so if you don’t have any spare that’s OK.
Just to let you know that it is still 31ºC a 12:30. I was out pulling branches off dead trees at dusk in a windy dust storm that had a cooler and sprinkly ending But watching Sherlock Holmes under the cooler later. Snoozed in the chair for a bit. Just passing on my way to the real bed.
I’ve eaten my first tomatoes for the season.
scratch that, it hadn’t updated. Actually it was 32.4ºC @ 00:30 AM
Boy, I don’t miss Luckyland Summers at all… Yesterday here it sneaked into 30ºC again between the hours of 11am and 2pm, it then dropped off to the evening overnight low of 24ºC. It does this everyday, like clockwork. No need to be alarmed by cold fronts or hot northerlies. Only 7.4mm for November, that’s 2inches below average, so a dry warm end to Spring. Summer starts tomorrow and we average over 700mm for those three months, lets hope the wet starts sooner rather than later.

Hot night here too. Aircon on all night here and still had trouble sleeping. I have heat rash. Antihistamines and Aloe Vera and I still itch.
Currently 31ºC and only going to get hotter :(
I hate hot weather :(

Me toooo, although I’m glad to see the back of the extended winter, the hot nights are not conducive to sleeping.
I’ve cleaned the hens coops of left over mincemeat, refillled water containers and fed and cleaned the bubs in the brooder. Also fed and clean watered the visiting bunnies, they love rhubarb stalks!, and today I’ll put their hutch out under the shady almond tree. I’m so used to poultry and obviously not used to rabbits, I forgot they pee! lol.
last day of Spring, where did it go !!!

ssh or I’ll tell curve that you a bikierI just went outside and the wind is not as hot, although it is still pretty warm out there. There is a rain band coming through that looks like has reach Benalla so hopefully will be here soon, and won’t pass by to the north.

which it did :(
temperature is dropping though (now 30.3)
not much sleep last night, even with the aircon on and sleeping in the guest room that has a ceiling fan.
Should be a bit cooler today (28C) and have had 1mm of rain with more predicted as scattered showers and thunderstorms. Mind you the showers managed to bypass me to the north and south yesterday so I am not holding my breath!
Off to the local market this morning, and then we’ll see how I feel for the rest of the day’s activities. I suspect that it will be indoors in the cool again.
