I’m looking for a good composting bin.. out of these two, does anyone have one or the other or can reccomend an even better one that doesn’t need turning , or minimal turning ?
The open bin compost heap bins I can’t manage because of the mixing and turning it over.

the best bin i have is a Gedeye bin. it’s definitely not fancy but has consistently worked better for me than other bins i’ve had. i turn the compost over regularly but, that’s because i have fair amounts of matter to compost, and i don’t want to wait 6 months for finished compost. Here are the features of the Gedeye i found useful:
- not too expensive (approx $90 for the big model)
- one piece + lid, so it’s sturdy. you can lift it off and leave a “cake” of compost, to either turn into the empty relocated bin or to use. modular bins are very difficult to lift off to turn the compost, so you have to shovel out half these bins through the top, before you can lift off. those slide off panels are an absolute joke and no use whatsoever, when it comes to practical composting.
- keeps the matter moist all the time, and does have some airflow into it via lid handles. the modular bins always dry where the slots are.
i haven’t used hi-tech bins, as i wouldn’t spend that much money on one….most of them cost as much as several tons of ready compost from compost suppliers.

I don’t have either of those… I have the common open bottom black bin & then the tumbler.

I love to get out there and play in the black bins compost and turn it with a gardening fork.

When I have emptied the tumbler I pop the compost from the black bin into the tumbler. Then I start the process all over again……

I like the first compost bin though…looks FAB TAB

In my opinion, the bins that require turning don’t have enough volume anyway. You may as well have a bin that sits on the ground. I have one or two of each and the black one which sits on the ground never seems to get full. About once a year i lift the bin off and place it beside the pile and throw all the undecayed stuff into it leaving a pile of goodies for use. They’re cheapest and require the least work. The amount of money they want for a plastic box is unbelievable IMHO. I also use a huge cardboard box, like they transport watermelons in but i turn these occassionally. Having said that though, if i don’t turn it, it will break down eventually.
Have you seen those corkscrew shaped things for turning compost? You wind them into the pile and then pull them out, in order to aerate the pile. They work OK.
One thing is for sure, of the 4 plastic bins i have, i haven’t paid money for any of them. One came from the tip. 2 were worm farms and one was Dads. There are thousands out there in backyards not being used. Bugger paying for them i reckon.
