Subject: Mites in Worm Farm! Advice please?
I just lost a detailed draft post:(
Here is a link to some pictures. So far mites – if that is what the dots with legs are don’t seem to have hurt the worms. I say this because I barely had time after ruffling surface to rinse hands and focus camera before they buried themselves again!
http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a43/cackles/Compost%20and%20Worms/
Sorry, have to run now – haircut (long overdue) appt at 12:45pm!
Should be back later this afternoon to see if there are words of wisdom. The texts shown , to my surprise don’t even mention mites…:(
I’m pretty sure I have seen advice somewhere before – perhaps on Lucky’s website? – have yet to search web…

Okay cackles….
Heres my thoughts on it….
If they are little red mite and there seems to be tons of them, clustered together……. its part og the composting worm system.
I tends to find the mites come to the surface and are easy to see on wet or more so humid days…..
I’ll see if I have a photo on my blog for you to comapre it too.

I get stacks of the little red mites too. Only time they worried me was in particularly wet weather I started finding them in the bathroom, but they disappeared again when the weather dried up.

Oh, thank you so much, Lucky! Yes, yes, yes as far as I can see – your picture shows more detail than mine though.
And it is such a relief and good news :D
I really don’t know why I had the idea that they would be a problem – maybe because the poultry ones can be such a problem, I suppose! Now I will put the lid back on and not be so careful in cross-populating the – uhmm 8 now :P – farms!

That is perhaps an idea if you’d like, VG – or anyone else :)
It would save readers having to go looking elsewhere for them and I’m not very confident of which code to display them.
The next lot I put on PhotoBucket I will select size option for my 17” screen view, (as I usually do) when I upload from my PC :) Then clickable thumbnails should be OK?

Not very big “farms”! I put the overflow into some other containers and have been gathering more worms from the wet chookshed litter – shavings+feathers+chookfeed+newspaper with a bit of manure I suppose. Fair bit heaped on my compost bin with last few weeks of wet weather so compost worms were coming out the laced seams of the bins and breeding well in top of compost bins as well as in farms. Have given some away and inspired some other family members too. I enjoy playing with my worm farms, just in case you hadn’t already guessed! :P
I did buy a 20 litre bucket full of worms to start the 2 Reln farms! :D They came from a school farm and had been used to a diet of horse manure and lucerne hay. Well, I have a friend with a couple of horses and I grow lucerne! All spare chook and duck eggs go to the worms which thrive at my place. :D

We used to have a cat called Budha who was a fiend for fresh eggs, had to keep them ontop of the fridge. One day he worked out how to get at them and knocked a whole carton off. We found him sitting in the middle of the mess having a great feed.

Before the kids were born, elf had a show cat (Siamese) and Andy use to have a chook egg for breakfast. On the early morning shifts…he’d get a egg from hubby and then when I got up…. Andy would front up for a second egg…..
Took us a few shifts to work out what the little bugger was doing…lol

While we’re on worm farms, is there any problem with having slugs in farms?? I’ve been finding a few..

You know I often wonder how the little buggers get in.
What I do is I wait until they are big and fat and juicey…. then I feed them to the gang:)
I am not fussed when I find one in there. Found a big snail once in a farm…. Clancy said “Ta mum” when i gave it to her.
