OK, so you’re not supposed to swallow toothpaste, but why? I’ve heard a bunch of different reasons, usually something to do with the fluoride content. I’ve been using Tooth Mousse (the fluoridated one) for almost a week now and the instructions for use say you can swallow it. What’s the difference between swallowing toothpaste and swallowing Tooth Mousse?

Toof Moose ingredients:
Pure water
glycerol
CPP-ACP
D-sorbitol
CMC-Na
Propylene Glycol
silicon dioxide
titanium dioxide
xylitol
phosphoric acid
sodium fluoride
flavoring (vanilla)
sodium saccharin
ethyl p-hydroxybenzoate
propyl p-hydroxybenzoate
butyl p-hydroxybenzoate

(and isn’t phosphoric acid from soft drinks a problem, even in sugar-free ones? Why add it to a tooth remineraliser?)

Stabilise the pH.

new parents are told that your child swallowing toothpaste is probably going to turn them into serial killers or, at least, mass murderers . which is why they have age specific toothpastes… and feel they can charge a fortune for it.

‘tis great, half the amount of fluoride, half the total volume, twice to three times the cost…

We need to talk about Kevin. He swallowed toothpaste as a kid :( I blame myself.

Surely tooth mousse has more fluoride in it than drinking water?

The easy ‘out’ is to simply not have them brush their teeth…

problem solvered…

Yes, but I pointed to the article more for problems excess intake of fluoride – hence the don’t swallow warnings (combine tooth mousse, toothpaste and fluoridated drinking water and it’s possible to chronically OD and end up with fluorosis.)

OK, that makes sense. I was clearly a bit confuzzled by it all.

How much fluoride is in the drinking water?

Can you get fluorosis from drinking too much water?

Unlikely (highly). Unless there is some sort of fluoride related accident at the treatment plant.

One should probably add, in Oz.
In some places it is a real problem. Some towns in rural China for example.

Is this naturally occurring chlorine in China?

Fluorine. Yes.

Water treatment plants in such places are geared to remove fluorine, using things like activated alumina.

I’ve been swallowing toothpaste since I was about 6, and it doesn’t seem to have had any effect on me. Yet. I’ve been told that eating toothpaste can make you sick for a while (so you can get a valid medical certificate) but will wear off after a morning or so, but haven’t tried it. I have done that with an overdose of vitamin C, though.

Look at the first few posts after DA’s. Very reminiscent of Eyes.
