There’s been a breakthrough in the fight against the Hendra virus. A vaccine for horses is now available which stops the horse developing the virus, and therefore decreases the risk of exposure for humans. It was developed by the CSIRO in partnership with Pfizer and two other American partners.

The Hendra virus is spread by flying foxes and has killed 4 people and more than 80 horses since it was first detected nearly 20 years ago.
