Look out for pest crabs

We are asking fishers to keep an eye out for any unusual crabs they find when fishing in the Swan River.

This follows the discovery of an Asian paddle crab – a highly invasive marine pest – by a recreational fisher in Mosman Bay.

Several follow-up surveys of the local waters where the pest crab was caught have not located any more, but public help is now crucial in finding further possible specimens.

A fact sheet is available to help fishers identify the crab.

Anyone who suspects they have found this species should call the FishWatch reporting line on 1800 815 507 or email biosecurity@fish.wa.gov.au

the important thing is to read the factsheet, as there are several native swimmer/mud crabs which look similar-ish.

So how did these crabs end up in the Swan river?

probably from one of the boats that docked in Freo harbour that sailed through infested waters (such as in NZ). Larvae can be in ballast water, on fouled hulls, in fishing gear, etc… Larvae are tenacious little bastards.

I was going to say that the crab in the post above looks just like the other crabs around here

like as if biosecurity gives a crap

you’ve already got millions of cane toads taking down native animals already with nothing being done

Wa is kind of proud of its ‘isolation’ and cross border policy. You can’t even bring honey from SA to WA.. even the bees get pollen checked at the border.

I think the cane toads are going to win though :(

the only way to get rid of them now is either build robots to kill them on sight or develop a biological weapon

the bio weapon has never eventuated which leaves the robots in play

you could set up metal posts maybe about 20/30m high or more

on top of the post could live a platform with a compressed air powered stainless steel ball bearing gun

the gun would live under a scope that is continually monitored by a computer,

when something that looks like a toad is spotted a laser is shone on it and the spectral response noted, if it looks like a toad the computer alerts a human gunner back in town somewhere that identifies it as a toad and gives the order to fire

the platform at the top could be pulled up and down by a pulley system that allows someone to turn up and service the platform and load in more ball bearings

if you were really hardcore you could make something much higher to survey a larger area (you’d be limited by the guns range though)

no i’m being totally serious

if you wanted to kill the crab you could make killer mini subs that patrol the ocean looking for it

I wonder if there is a life form some where saying,
“there seems to be a new pest species on the third planet from that star there, little bastards run around on their two hind legs, and are totally f*cking the planet, better send an extermination unit in before it’s too late for all the other species?
