Veg- it is VERY important to keep your tetanus injections up to date! Only need every 10 years and it gives peace of mind if you have any cuts, scratches – All gardeners especially need to be protected!

Good idea cackles…. though VG should be covered from his high school jabs….Read it VG…. elf has seen the results of tetanus in sheep…. bloody awful to watch.
Yes – I’d be very surprised if he wasn’t already covered too – and just not aware of it :)
We had sheep too so grew up especially aware of risks…

yeah i was thinking i most probly had one at school.
The tetanus shedule has changed. I’ve just had one and 50 years old is the last one you need.
I had a tetanus jab 2 years ago. I told the doctor what my hobby is and about handling manure, potting mix etc, and she said it was a good idea to have another. I’m Waaaaaaaaaay past 50!

They will still give you one if you are injured, i think.

Yes, maybe it has changed. I must have been out when they called to tell me LOL

Must depend on your GP! I just had another one a few months ago – a combined one as that’s all they have now – diptheria? perhaps . I believe my Dr is up to date -he is part of an authorised travel/tropical medicine practice.
I will continue to follow his advice…
My guess is as good as yours cackles. I’ve been told the same thing by two docs. If your boosters are up to date nothing is needed after the 50 year one unless you have an injury.
I’ve even searched the net and all the schedules finish at 50.
I’m asking over at SSSF.

Once you’ve had five doses of vaccine (3 in first year, 18 months or 4 years, teenager), you don’t need any more as an adult, unless you have a dirty injury, until you get one more vaccination at 50.
Australian Immunisation Handbook
8th Edition
A completed course of vaccination
provides protection for many years. One further vaccination is given to those who
sustain a tetanus-prone wound (see below) and to adults ≥50 years of age.
Vaccination of adults
Those who have received a primary course of 3 doses as adults should receive
booster doses 10 and 20 years after the primary course. Adults who have
sustained injuries deemed to be tetanus-prone should receive a boosting dose of
dT, if more than 5 years have elapsed since the last dose (see below). All adults
who reach the age of 50 without having received a boosting dose of dT in the
previous 5 years should receive a further boosting dose of dT. (NB: Adult/
adolescent formulation dTpa can be used instead; see Part 3.16, ‘Pertussis’,
Adults and older children.) This stimulates further production of circulating
tetanus antibodies in an Australian population still at risk of tetanus, especially
through gardening.

And for completeness:
Vaccination in childhood
Tetanus vaccination is part of the ASVS (see Part 1.7, ‘The Australian Standard
Vaccination Schedule’). Tetanus toxoid is given in combination with diphtheria
toxoid and acellular pertussis vaccine as DTPa in a primary course of vaccination
at 2, 4 and 6 months of age and in boosting doses given as DTPa at 4 years of age
and adult/adolescent formulation dTpa at 15 to 17 years of age. By the age of 17
years, young adults should have received 5 doses of a tetanus toxoid containing
vaccine, and may have received an extra dose if they have endured an exposureprone
wound during childhood.
The removal from the ASVS of the booster dose of DTPa at 18 months of age
means that the first booster dose of tetanus toxoid will now be given at age 4
years. Immunity to tetanus will not be compromised because the serological
response to the primary course of vaccination is sufficient for those years. The
second booster dose of tetanus toxoid, given in combination with a smaller dose
of diphtheria toxoid and an adult dose of acellular pertussis vaccine (dTpa) at
age 15–17 years is an important component of the new ASVS, maintaining
immunity to tetanus in adults.
DT (CDT vaccine) is registered for use in children less than 8 years of age, and
should only be used if there is a genuine contraindication to pertussis vaccine.
For details on the management of children who have missed doses in the
standard childhood vaccination schedule, see Part 1.9, ‘Catch-up vaccination’.

NP :-)
The handbook is available online, if people wish to peruse it themselves, but I DLed a pdf to make life easier.
Geez that’s confusing – I thought it was just every ten years. Better remember to ask my GP when I go next – when I saw the travel doc last year he said I had tetanus due in about two years..
I’ll be a lot less injury prone when I can find someone to dig up the %#*(%& roses and take them away…
Any injury will not result in Tetanus infection. The reason why we get infected and the symptoms that we show are explained in this website.
