But the door seals are shit, do a trip out to the goldfields and back and that fine red dirt will have gotten into the interior.
Nice to drive though. 6-speed turbo diesel manual. It will sit on 100 km/h in 6th gear just under the turbo kicking it, want to over take a truck or something just out your foot down, turbo kicks in and you just cruise on by. We have one at work, dual cab ute.

6-Speed? Is that the 2.5 TD or 3.0 V6TD. The 550 is the 7-speed auto mated to the V6 TD, made by Renault/Nissan.
Dunno then. Ignore what I said and just carry on….

I wont ignore you comment on door seals. You would guess they are the same which ever varient motor, not that I plan on much offroad stuff.

we got a six speed nissan pathfinder at work , poor 4×4, no tourqu till you hit 2000rpm
I have the problem, living on a dirt road. The local mechanic advises keeping the internal pressure up by turning the air to outside source and keeping the fan running.
:)
yes
My Triton always leaked dust, from brand new. The people who sold me the vehicle never apologised, just told me that they had to drill extra holes to drain dust filling door cavities.
the triton has no room for your left foot
you’ll find that any long distance driving means your left foot gets shoved into an uncomfortable angle
the tritons foot well was designed for petite ladies with tiny feet
if you have tiny feet you’ll have no problem driving the triton

another problem with the triton is that it is sluggish
if you are competing with city traffic forget it
it kind of has enough grunt to get past traffic on the highway but 130 is the engines limit, if you need to get somewhere fast in the middle of nowhere on a highway you’d be better off with an iload which starts losing grunt at around 200

Which vintage?
Not my model.
i hated driving it
there was a mitsubishi family wagon that was a rocket ship i was told it was good for 230
it had limited acceleration, if you were in a chase situation it would be unlikely that anyone could outrun you unless they were in a racing car – the holden ute would stand a chance of getting away
the mitsubishi’s certainly have that primal grunt and make other vehicles in the dust
i don’t like toyota
i think they are cheap and nasty with a high price tag – i don’t think they are put well

strangely enough.. the grunt the Triton delivers is in 4×4 mode. not lamborghini mode.
200??? 230??? far out wookie, you are judging 4×4s in a way you should look at track cars or drag cars.

but beware the limited foot space, it drove me nuts
thankfully i don’t drive it anymore after changing jobs
my principle mode of travel is via the I-load by hyundai an infintely pleasurable vehicle to drive that puts cars to shame when it comes to acceleration. the brakes are good and the handling is stable even on bumpy country roads up to and probably beyond 200
i’ve had complaints from one passenger about it being bumpy , the pasenger version is the imax which must have better cushioning
i love this van

for anyone else they are a waste of time
i love the iload because you are high and sit in a position of command, you can see sneaky radar /laser systems a mile off with vehicles covering you
one idea i’m entertaining is a visor system to see 2/3 kilometers down the road to look for radar traps
My next 4×4 is going to be a petrol one. I will never buy a car with a particulate filter in the exhaust system again. The Suzuki has been a nightmare in that regard. It has a lousy driving position too.

i don’t really like 4×4s they are good for anyone who is using for real ie live in the country and regularly use dirt tracksfor anyone else they are a waste of time

in city traffic the triton is sluggish
put your foot down hard and the triton finally wakes up 3 seconds later
the VW is the same but much worse
the germans have been very thorough, its underpowered in all 5 gears, who says the germans don’t have a sense of humour?

Wookie, the iLoad looks like a good work van, I am even considering it for my work, but you should try driving within the law and not finding ways around it.

My next 4×4 will probably be the 3.0TD Pathfinder, unless I win the $100 million, then I will buy the Navara version.

my ultimate vehicle would be some kind of work vehicle with fat tyres with spoliers and made from carbon fibre with some kind of powerful motor that gets you up to 300 if you need it. the suspension would need to handle high speed.
you’d have some kind of head up display that can look down the road like an eagles eye to look for the police
the only real danger on the roads for me are the police, i watch the oncoming traffic enough to get out of the way of the idiots that wipe themselves
speed isn’t the propblem its people who make everyone else to their lowest common denominator.
there was another “tragedy” on the roads recently some twit had wiped himself overtaking on a bridge with no seat belt at high speed. i would just bulldoze the wreckage of these idiots to the side and let traffic through again
when the sun goes down i normally drop my speed to the legal milit and below
if you can only see as far as your headlights watch out if you are moving fast
subaru drivers are often speed demons driving beyond their capability.
i remember driving down a hill in sydney when out of nowhere this female pulled out on me causing me to brake. i watched as a kid bounced around in the back, when i passed her doing the speed limit and no more, this enraged her no end
brains beat some twit who could drive fast but had no knowledge of how traffic moves. i was able to find ways through the traffic without cutting other drivers or annoying them.

Get a job as an F1 driver and then you will have your ultimate work vehicle and you wont be a danger to normal people.

i don’t drive beyond my ability or the machines ability.
we have been brainwashed about 100 being safe/ acceptable
try driving long distances – you fall asleep
they would be better off having a sticker system, idiots with no drivign ability get to drive at 100 the drivers with >100 IQ with predictive abilities as of any ape get to drive faster. it would be safe for anyone with a modicum of intelligence to be allowed to drive at beyond 100. i would say 160 tops. you have to adjust your driving for the conditions.
each situation tells a story
probably drunk, nightime, driving fast and pulling out on traffic on the highway. he is going to the local petrol station to get more alcohol and cigarettes. its written all over them – he has a traffic violations list as long as your arm.

i see plenty of normal people, they have no concept of traffic, can’t use the gears, and have no powers of prediction, if you asked them what would be happening on the road in ten or 30 seconds time they couldn’t put forward any possibilities – apparently apes have that ability.i don’t drive beyond my ability or the machines ability.

Most of us are able to admit that predicting what could possible happens in the next 280m (10s@100km/h) is beyond us, but I guess you are absolutely sure of the outcome of every event in the next 540m (10s@200km/h)…
i take note of warning signs
low light – don’t go fast kangaroos, less visibility/ anything could happen – i slow down
animals on the road, if you see one there will be another along soon, i slow down and slow down again
many drivers don’t take the hint of their situation changing – this can happen slowly or it can happen fast regardless of your speed
if it rains – slow down, you’ve just lost grip – i drive any vehicle like a motorcycle in the wet, slow and careful
the green light means that you can move forward, is there still traffic coming through on the red light?
when in doubt slow right down, if you have less than normal light levels – slow down
if you aren’t driving in perfect conditions – slow down
watch all oncoming traffic like a hawk – it will only take a second for them to slam into you – evaluate all drivers coming at you

if you are haulig something they have plenty of grunt
one word
if you are having a triton serviced make sure they replace both fuel filters – theres supposedly a fuel filter ina difficult place, mechanics will normally not replace that filter if they can get away with it. soon enough all you can get out of it is 80kmph
if you’re dragging something the most you’ll get out of it is 130

gives up
FWIW, one of the larger emergency services (in Australia) has just had to put 38 Hiluxes off the road because fitting the standard winch bar on the front and carrying passengers was too much for the front suspension. The vehicles, most of them bought with donated (community) funds, were taken out of commission effective immediate, which has left several mobs desperately short of vehicles, and will only be replaced after full and thorough bureaucratic process.
The whole thing is a gigantic cluster-fuck and Toyota are doing absolutely nothing to help.

Is this a Toyota part? Should be some fit for purpose provision.

Yeah, it’s complicated. For starters, the vehicles are owned by branches of a statutory authority, which are not a real legal entity in their own right (they might be an unincorporated association, no-one is sure) – Either way, it appears they cannot sue or be sued. Can the authority sue on their behalf? Who knows. Can anyone afford to sue Toyota over a ‘fit for purpose’ issue? again, who knows.
An alternative is to have the vehicles modified and certified by an engineer. I understand the service involved has looked at this and decided it’s better to simply replace them (even though, as mentioned above, they’re owned by the individual branches, not the service).

I am sure Toyota would hate to hear it get out that its work vehicles with a certain cachet as being used by emergency purposes do not work with passengers and the Toyota winch. Car companies are very sensitive to that sort of publicity they will advertise in the glossy trade mags and lifestyle blurbs placed in 4WD and hunting fishing mags etc. so that maybe another direction.
I assume ut has been escalated slowly starting with a nice letter to head of Toyota Oz and working from that, give them a chance to fix first. Happy snaps with Emergency Services with Toyota dealers working together for the comunity gear.

the time, effort and expense to do anything else isn’t worth it
Skunky, I think it’s worth observing that the issue is being ‘dealt with’ by a large organisation, the main purpose of which is to grow the organisation; the main function of which is to generate work that justifies the growth; and the main main mode of which is to create business systems which require maximum possible work input to not resolve exactly this kind of problem.
