Ow :( as there are a number of people here who are cranky old grumps :) I’m wondering if anyone has tried this treatment for painful hands (or feet)? I haven’t been diagnosed with arthritis, but it’s looking like that’s what I have. The latest joint to experience pain is my left wrist – it is really annoying.

I found this:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1006816/?page=1

A woman I did jewellery classes with swore that paraffin wax baths saved her hands and enabled her to do the work required to do silver-smithing.

The units range in price and are freely available here. My wrist always feels better when I run very warm water over it. Basically I just want to be a pain-free 20 year old again.

Have you seen a GP about it? I take an anti-inflammatory for gout which is very effective.

Not yet, I’m avoiding doctors right now :/ and we are changing our doctor soon (insurance changes), but it is on my list of things to do.

My aunt swore by getting outside first thing in the morning and deliberately and repeatedly shoving her hands in the patch of stinging nettles she maintained at the back door.

Tylenol 2 tds or qid.

NSAID as needed (ibuprofen et al not sure what is available at the drug stores in NM).

Wax bath – or other ‘heated’ counter irritant (like deep heat) may get similar results (according to the wife paraffin/wax bath feels very nice on the skin after immersion).

Thanks, I have ibuprofen but it doesn’t seem to work on my wrist. Last night I took the last of the pain meds (Lortab – Hydrocodone bitartrate and acetaminophen) from my tooth surgery because it was bugging me.

I also have used the Deep Heat creams we have – no help. Heat from a heat pad or water is the best so far (and the Lortab) I hate taking drugs on a daily/basis :(

Try another anti-inflammatory – 40% of people don’t respond to any one in particular, alternative may help in combination with regular acetaminophen.

ARTHREXIN is a highly effective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicine with marked analgesic and antipyretic properties.
Indomethacin is a potent inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis in vitro. Concentrations are reached during therapy which have been demonstrated to have an effect in vivo as well.
Indomethacin has been shown to be an effective anti-inflammatory agent, appropriate for long-term use in rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and osteoarthritis.

I seem to recall a story about a famous Composer / Pianist (Scubert?) who was instructed by his doctor to spend hours each day with his hands in the rectum of a cow…

Have you tried giving them a really good stretch? http://ergocise.com/wrists.html

Very few people stretch their hands properly, IME, which is a shame because it makes a big difference.
