supposed to get 10-15mm today, but it hasn’t happened yet (apart from 1mm this morning) and the radar is looking pretty bare of blue stuff. My garden is as dry as.
Tuesday is going to be a corker apparently. 39c predicted for Brisbnae and we are mostly 3 or 4 degrees above Bris. We’ll be in Brisbane on Monday but it should be a bit milder than 39c. For pete’s sake!!!
Right now I appreciate winter.

Very hot and still very dry. I don’t know how some plants just keep on going no matter how dry it gets. Others can’t handle it at all.

wind is coming from the south today, so much cooler.
Rain last night. Very fresh breezes from the north east. Temp at 16:00 yesterday was 33.5, by 18:00 it was 35.5…however cools rapidly after 20:00 especially if the 9 o’clock breeze turns up.
36c here at 9:30am. Yesterday was a corker. It reached 42 at our place. I’ve never experienced temps that high before in my life. Teev said it was the highest reading since records started in 1901. We are only able to spend time outside after about 3 in the arvo or before the sun gets too high. You’d cook if you tried to stand out in that heat.
The dog finds the coolest places so I follow her around if the air con is off. It’s a change because it’s usually her that follows me around. lol.

I’m not a devotee yet. That 42c was for where we live. Brisbanes max was only the highest for 9 years. Our 4570 post code is hardly global.

Still? “Our” winter crops are well and truly off, the irrigated summer plantings are in (not so much cotton this year because of prices) and summer dryland plantings are waiting on these rains…

That would be the one I thought was a “fuel load”? You said it was wheat, didn’t you?
that’s the one. a short stubby crop but fairly dense.
the landowner share farms with an actual doer/ farmer with the machinery.
the landowner keeps abreast of spot prices on the market and probably knows what he’s doing – i hope.

Unreal…gives a whole new meaning to “commercial farming”… I hope he knows what he’s doing, would think the wheat would spoil in the sun up here if left out too long…
Some of these farmers know the weather predictions better than Livio. I reckon if you see the wheat coming off at short notice, batten the hatches as the saying goes…I often used to predict my weather by the farmers down the back…if they were harvesting through the night (up to a dew point I suppose) or , alternatively, planting just as madly, then rain was imminent…now I tell the rain possibility by the kookaburras…one kookaburra weather, 2 kooka weather, etc, and to prove my point: when we were receiving all that high rainfall this past winter, there were 4, 5 and 6 kookaburras…

The cool change just blew in, temperature just dropped from 36 (dot something) C to 23 in minutes and very windy.

wonder how long it will take to get here? The mountain range tends to slow it down.
Oh, sorry, I forgot to report the cool change here! It arrived about 3 hours ago, but I just went straight outside to plant out seedlings and prick others out into pots. And, of course, one thing leads to another and I ended up weeding and starting on the watering too. No sign of rain here.

I’ve tried to refrain but now I have to complain. Lack of rain is becoming serious. My magnolia is starting to die. The crotons leaves are curling up Neither of these get regular water because they always outlast the dry but not this time. The flowers on capense are now drooping instead of standing erect. It’s getting so I don’t want to look around the yard anymore.

I know the feeling…and it’s such a bummer when the shrubs / trees start showing stress…
Been pleasant today, only just hit 32C I think…
Make that 35C: Buffy’s got 35C coming up on Thursday…get all the mulch down now and water like mad…for the tender stuff, set up a barely-leaking drip system (keep hose in shade as far as you can) onto any planted out seedlings you want to survive…
Still no sign of rain here. I have noticed where people have mowed recently the grass is brown. Totally devoid of green shoots. It all looks dreadful.
Lovely big, fluffy grey clouds pass over but don’t produce. Something’s got to give soon.
We’ll have to buy water for the house tank in a week or so. We’ve been lucky to have made it this far.
I hoped we might get some rain last night but it didn’t work out that way…came up from the south west…they’ve been getting odd cells of rain further out west along the Tropic of Capricorn line…what the weather people call “patch”…

Cloudy and cool here, the Aerodrome says 22C but it feels cooler than that here. We have 85% cloud cover (in my estimation) but the BOM is not showing any cloud cover at all…
was going to try and get up early to do some outside stuff before the heat, but a hot night = late sleep = sleep in and I woke later than usual. It is now over 27C outside heading for 35C so those things will just have to wait another day, or two. It is heat control mode for me and the animals again today.
never really cooled off last night altho’ a gully breeze did allow me to sleep.
i did some more mulching early today, but by 10am it was too hot, so i dived in the pool.
we have cloud cover at the moment but the air is hot and humid.
when the rain first came yesterday ‘prevening’ (sheldon’s word) there was a strong smell of smoke – prolly because my local friendly farmer had started a fire on wednesday by running his harvester over some rocks.
i can see two local farmers trying to harvest their wheat crops. talk about risky business. rain is forecast, but a fire in those 300 hectare crops would be utterly unstoppable. they are harvesting so much wheat that they fill all their silos and trucks every day and so stop harvesting to go to the grain stores. I doubt either crop is half done yet.

Why do the southern farmers take their winter wheat off so late? In our hot sun the grain would deteriorate, shrivel up to nothing…Have they been waiting on the harvesters themselves? This happens a lot out here with some cotton crops…

december is normal for wheat harvest here. only one in four crops is wheat nowadays.
these guys are the last in the district to harvest – so they are trying for the fattest grain to get top prices.
they are probably winning and grinning at this stage – but they must be sweating and swearing as well in this heat.

I get the picture…
Currently only 34.4°C
Wheat harvest here rarely goes into December, depends upon onset of autumn rains and timing of planting to avoid possible rust and other rain induced problems nearer harvest.roughbarked said:

the other part of the equation is trucking all this stuff to roseworthy silos and grain storage.
every 20 ton truck in the district will be employed until this job is finished
- and down at the silos – weighing and offloading – all in 40C heat.
then – if they finish on saturday – a lot of blokes will be down at the pub
- these two farmers are in charge of a lot of business at present.

there has been concern expressed over the long hours farmers spend this time of year harvesting, and then hop in a truck overtired and hit the road at the end of the day.

I recall a horror incident with my ex-landlord Town Mayor.. on grape vintage.. He turned right into a farm gate with a B-double to collect more grapes .. A twin cab Toyaota clipped the turning truck prime mover and rolled for a hundred metres or so, killing four.

Interesting about the wheat harvest in your area…our area has depended on dryland agriculture since the late 50’s (that I’m aware of) hence my interest in the topic…of course we are also “the beef area of Australia”… so they say…just ask PainMaster about his impressions of Bovinia… lol
our “dry” is at a different time of year to you.

Light rain now on and off. I’m making a list of what to take to the vege swap on Sat. I need to pick and pack tomorrow in case Sat morn is too wet. Where we meet there’s shelter so we still go along.
It just tried to rain here. I think there might have been a couple of hundred drops. Temp is around 22 now.
We are going out for tea shortly to the local pub. Mr buffy, the other ambulance person in town and the student who is getting experience with them. Are we laying bets about me and the other ambulance person’s partner being the ones left with 5 meals between us when the three pagers go off?

we have cloud cover at the moment but the air is hot and humid.
when the rain first came yesterday ‘prevening’ (sheldon’s word) there was a strong smell of smoke – prolly because my local friendly farmer had started a fire on wednesday by running his harvester over some rocks.i can see two local farmers trying to harvest their wheat crops. talk about risky business. rain is forecast, but a fire in those 300 hectare crops would be utterly unstoppable. they are harvesting so much wheat that they fill all their silos and trucks every day and so stop harvesting to go to the grain stores. I doubt either crop is half done yet.
I hope the fires don’t happen. Sounds terrible.

Sounds like Qld.
we had rain – overnight and midday – ground is wet to about 70mm deep.
not much rain but good stuff.
both farmers have stopped harvesting –
- the one on the distant hill could be a special case – he’s practically a living legend of wheat growing around here – so for some reason (beyond my puny experience) he has left some of his crop unharvested.
the bloke across the road finished about 65% of his crop. again, for reasons beyond me, he has been taking off the grain and then baling the straw straight away.

yes
the rest of the wheat and straw will be downgraded i guess
- i feel a bit ignorant of their real purposes tho’ – i might get some insight tomorrow when i buy a bale of straw off my local friendly farmer – he normally chats about our mutual neighbour-across-the-road.

they can’t harvest if the crop is wet as it will go mouldy or sprout in storage, so they will have to wait to harvest what is left after it dries out again.

I’d take moisture down to 70mm this afternoon if I could. Any precipitation really? The local grassfires have made things very smoky this morn.
4.2 mm of rain and now the sun is shining brightly. Pfft.
I’ll go find the sprinkler. Vege swap is going ahead and I have seedlings and greens to load into the car. I’m taking a bowl of kale chips for small, and big kids :)

BG wins – we got about 6-8mm.
Ours was the equivalent of about 2-3 hours of irrigation and – P1 fungi immediately emerged – P2 the good garden soil was dampened to a depth of about 70mm (or a trowel blade) but – P3 this depth of dampening only occured in the well worked garden areas – elsewhere the top 10mm were dampened – except for where the clay had cracked wide open where dampening took place below the surface to an unknown depth. (mumble mumble inquisitive minds and probing questions mumble mumble). LOL

before i go to pick up my big bale of barley straw
P1 – radishes and lettuce loved the rain
P2 – and at last my basil looks alive
P3 – don’t forget to mound up around your beans – the stalks weaken at ground level if you don’t – which is why some of these stopped producing and started turning yellow.

The fungi look cute…JUst love the long shot of your vegetable garden as it is…
Bummer when it goes down the clay cracks…what’s your soil type again?

the soil strata are – topsoil – clay – limestone – sand
mostly the 1 hectare site is alkaline clay for 600+mm on top.
- but i have totally changed the top 200 – 500mm around the house half acre by importing sand and manures .
nice pics justin, some vege bed envy happening here.

what happened was ms j. said ‘how deep did the rain penetrate?’ and standing by my old spud bed I saw the trowel and dug that hole.
how deep did your 15mm of rain go?

i have just bought a big bale and offloaded it.
the local friendly farmer said that 8mm of rain makes virtually no difference to the harvesting of the grain or the straw. so as soon as it dries out they start harvesting again.
a different contractor is baling the straw so baling doesn’t effect the speed of harvesting the grain.
simple but not as exciting as all the variations i had dreamt up.

apparently cleanliness is one – but there’s something about leaving less residuals for the next crop.

There was a vicious storm in Emerald early this week and some complained that it wasn’t advised by the BoM…what the??? Can’t they look out and see the storm clouds brewing?\
The BoM said because of the smoke haze, their predictions were all out of kilter…
To my mind, people who rely only on the BoM are as stupid as those who rely only on their in-car GoogleMaps to tell them where they are (can’t look out the window for the road directions…)
I get quite irritable with people who say “But the Bureau promised…”. They never promise anything. It’s a forecast! People, it’s an educated guess. There are no promises and no excuse for not looking at th sky for yourself.

Good morning. Already over 30 degrees here and the wind is a Northerly. Watering was done early, and I’ve prepared the salads for lunch. I need to go outside and put the fire buckets along the verandah and shake the spiders out of the mops. We checked the roof sprinklers earlier. We live in a town, with a botanic garden between us and the grass plains, but a good wind could easily send us embers. We have got a total fire ban today.

I’m hoping for some showers of rain. That would be good.
There’s supposed to be a cold front moving through near you tomorrow but I’m not sure you’ll get the benefits…
Now down to 26, but we have opened up the house rather than sleep with the aircon going. I’m off to bed. Might read for a while.
well driving to the very bottom of the peninsula to meet with family yesterday, there was a scorching northerly blowing and the outside air was 40ºC. I stepped outside to purchase some lemonade from a corner store, they call them delis down here and it was like walking into a furnace. We don’t do 40ºC in the tropics, and at least we can sweat in the humidity. But that dry northerly just robbed my body of any moisture, and my hair and lips starting to fall apart. Fortunately when we arrived at our destination the change had passed through and some good clods were building up. I sat down at the beach, white sand and seaweed and 6 Pelicans swam up to me. I noticed a few snapper carcasses that the locals fishers had discarded and I threw the heads and bones to the birds. The Pelicans swam around me and enjoyed their late afternoon snack. My lemonade went down went, and as the clods kept building, the humidity increased. It was becoming bearable again. You can keep your summer down Mexico way…
By the way, the sun setting at just before 9pm was heavenly. Good food, good company, good lemonade made for a wonderful evening.
Yeah Vic weather!
Get baked one day, blown apart the next, lol.
Freezing here…hang on whilst I check the scales…yep, 18.5C…time to find a light jumper…advise the lads to bring warm clothing and make sure they’ve got a blanket in their swags…

officially 20, but I reckon it was hotter than that. I had the aircon running all night and the fan in my bedroom to draw it in, but it doesn’t equate to naturally cold, single figure temps!

But I’m a light sleeper and it was more the humming air con that kept me awake.

Yes but we’ve got 20 mls here and the airport has got none…Should I have been more generous and said “areas around Longreach are getting hammered with rain?”

It looks like the rain has cleared until tomorrow afternoon at least, a good opportunity to bath the dogs and wash Shadow’s bed…
Lovely cooling shower just now, can’t keep mowing the yard but hey at least there’s something to mow…think the next band will pass to the north of us but maybe they’ll need it…
INteresting. Just looking at the local weather observations (which is out at the airport), there is no rainfall. However I’m betting we received a good 40 points of rain where I am. The airport is 5 miles away.

That often happens in my town too. One half wet with gutters flowing and you drive to the main st and it’s dry. ‘Rain shadows’ or something.
Looks like the “possible thunderstorm” might be a go-er…
Band of rain coming from the SW…yeehah!
looks like a cyclone forming up east of the Solomons.
weather here in Luckyland has been wonderful, around 29ºC and no humidity has meant that it feels just lubberly.

I’ve been watching the monsoonal troughs just underneath the Indonesian archipelago and south west of PNG…they’re drifting closer daily, trying to push those east and south eastern highs out of the way…
It’s rumbling in the South West. You little ripper!!! It must be our turn.

The reality is that the altered climate will make my region drier and how much drier do I need to get? I’ve struggled all my life with an average of 300 mm, less or more. I’ve spent a lot of time where the average is 150 mm, so it is not as if I am unfamiliar of what getting drier feels like.
currently 14.5°C
The forecast has been for “possible thunderstorms” for about 5 days now…I think the forecast is stuck in a loop…notice with interest that the tail end of that monsoon swinging down towards the NW of WA, has now become a cyclone. Mitchell.
36mm while we were absent!

That usually means that it will be here next. Oh goody………not.
We are headed for around 37c here today. Like everyone else it’s going to get worse as the week progresses. What joy!!
We had a shower yesterday, mist down the flats this morning and dew drops on every blade of grass…Mrs B next door commented on it, said it was a strange shower, but I said it was probably a high cloud with a narrow band of precipitation…all welcome anywho…
Forecast today, Mostly Sunny…they’ve given up on Possible Thunderstorm, looks like a non-arrival…lol!
37C and there was a sting in the sun at 07:30

Temp dropped after that reading. Thank heavens. Tomorrow is supposed to be slightly better but winds predicted.
According to my electronic kitchen scales, it was cooler in the cupboard than in the dining room.
Going up to 37C today, which is warmish.

I was hearing on the news about how public high rise housing doesn’t have airconditioning except in some public areas and they really suffer in the heat. Given that many will be aged, have illnesses or a disability it is a worry. If your disability precludes you from getting to the public areas then you can apply for personal airconditioning. I can just imagine hundreds of people crammed into limited spaces to get to the airconditioning.

I have to say it:

I want it to be still! This bloody wind.. tomato plants so heavy they are pulling the stake out as they bend, because of the wind. I’ve got a whacko lot of criscrossing bale twine holding stakes upright so the tomatoes don’t break.

If they didn’t grow a foot a day, I would be able to keep up. They are on mesh held wth star pickets. They’re all wilting now but will pick up when the sun goes down.
How are you Gardeners going? Still 42 here in Hamilton. Port Fairy has changed, dropped from 42 at 2.00pm to 27 at 4.00pm. The wind is moving round from the North to the West here now. There is a fire down Portland way. And near Koroit. My receptionist is going to Port Fairy after work (in about an hour) so we have decided she will be going via Macarthur to completely avoid the roads around Koroit.
Record temps at Hobart, Tasmania here
Just had a look at the Mt Gambier radar, all those 42C and 40C don’t look right down there…

Still 41ºC here and there were three fires I could see on my way into town to get a rainwater tank.
Still 40 degrees outside. Seems Port Fairy is hogging the cool change down on the coast. My chooks are panting. Even the cockatiels have their beaks open….I told them as they come from hot country they should be fine! I’ve put the low pressure sprinkler on very low for the birds in the garden. I can’t water the plants yet, it will just burn them.
currently 39.4C. Let all the chooks and ducks out together this morning and trusted that they will feel too hot to chase each other. the drake is the main culprit. The alternative was to leave them in hot pens and I just couldn’t do that to them today. Been out every now and then to provide ice for their water and make sure they are OK and they are keeping to the shade.
My chook run is shaded all day. They have water. The dogs are inside with us.

I’ve seen worse.
It isn’t uncommon. The problem these days is that: • We have to push ourselves through the eye of a needle to pay for a fraction of the water we used to get for a flat rate • the UV levels are way higher than I’ve ever seen and this makes a 40º day act upon the garden like it is 50ºAouple that to a very limited and expensive supply of water and it means that gardens look like they’ve been put through a microwave. Wages do not reflect the cost of survival anymore.
Aouple means couple.

Afraid I’d be leaving
Still 40.3 here and only mild relief overnight. I’ve spent the day keeping animals cool and garden watered. Sprinkler is on. I figure if that burns the leaves, we then at least the mist is cooling the air as they will wither anyway in the hot wind.
The silkies aren’t panting, their area is heavily shaded and is cooler. The leghorns were hanging around their gate, so I’ve opened it and they are happily mingling with the fluffballs and sharing their food.
My report (I’ve been out watering). Most things are surviving, although some French beans are cactus. They weren’t doing well anyway. But some others are doing fine. The gooseberry bushes (only a couple of years old) look a bit singed. The tomato plants are fine! The dahlias have fallen over….I need to actually tie them to their stakes in the morning.
And there are gazillions of little beetley things out there (mating furiously!). They have an elongated yellow body, olive coloured wings. I can’t manage to ID them, but they obviously think the world is going to end…
:)

I think the High on the Eastern seaboard ought to take some blame as well, altho’ it’s to the south east at the moment…
Cool-ish here…24C with a cool little south easterly whiffling along…Humidity 74% but that will plummet…we have about 99% clod cover for which I’m grateful, and no prospect of precipitation that I’m aware of…in fact I think the heatwave is coming this way over the next few days… all that burning off that’s been ongoing since September will hopefully pay off…

I have the sprinkler going for the ducks and chickens (and wild birds) and the keep the grass going for Peter Pan. Fortunately (for them) I have a bore and don’t have to worry about depleting my tanks.
Looks like the wind will switch around sometime this afternoon from a more southerly direction which should provide some relief tonight but will heat up again tomorrow.
44C at 5:37pm. Still blowing a hot northerly wind. Just put out more fresh water and ice for the animals and found a dead sparrow on the ground. the magpie family are hanging around with the chooks with beaks open panting.
I guess you don’t want to know we have had a pleasant 27 today. Although I did get a bit hot mid afternoon. I took the chance first thing this morning to clean out the grease trap. Not a favourite job, but better done in the cool than the heat.

Typical, they never get the weather right.. they told me three updated temps for today before the event and still got it wrong.. what was it? um they started at 39 and stopped at 44 but it actually was 45°C
wonder whether tomorrow will be 44 or 48?roughbarked said:

I think it is actually quite unusual how widespread this heat has been. A combination of factors have led up to it and there is more to come yet.

none of us.. ie: just before Black Saturday, Melbourne recorded a 10 day spell of more than 35. In that same period we had 15 days above 35 amongst which were 6 days over 40.
Way back in the 20’s, a 21 day spell of temps above 120 ºF saw the whole of my town ‘s young and old hunkered down in the new cool rooms owned by Frank Nugan’s father. (of Nugan & Hand bank, fame)Grey clods doing their thing again today but there isn’t any rain. I’ve been doing a systematic watering of all the shrubs that stand alone. Hose on a light trickle and leave on each plant for an hour. The only to get the water where it’s needed I find.
Temp is still mild. for us, that is.

Mild here too .. for 12:30 EDT pm in January.. 37.2°C
We have some light cloud cover which has reduced the temperature significantly, the website showing a mere 34.7 o C (laughs hysterically). Radar shows some very light bands of rain (5% chance!) but I doubt that it will even reach the ground. Tomorrow is supposed to only get to 25 o C after a cool night!! it will start warming up again the following day but it might give me a chance to feel more human again.
Our temp got to 37c today. Gonna be worse tomorrow. Oh what joy!.

I was watching that too…here’s hoping…
It’s official, we are one of the coolest spots in town…40C at the aerodrome where the weather station is, 36C in my kitchen which is the warmest spot in the house at the moment…
Was discussing this with MrD the other day, saying there’s generally only one degree C between the house and the aerodrome (up to the minute weather station courtesy of Rio Tinto) and he said the cooler temp would prevail at the house…so I have been watching the weather obs and the kitchen scales (which I’ve been using all along) and MrD is right, my spot is generally the cooler…
They have cancelled Boxercise at the Emerald PCYC because of the weather…I recall the Masters swimming session being called off once, because the water was 36.2C and of course you’d just heat up, no cooling off without jumping out after every lap…

Storms building up in the west, not sure if they’ll last the distance, they’ve got about 400k to cover to get here…
The weather obs say the wind is a 20 kmh northerly…still getting here as it’s calm outside…
I love watching the weather…

when I used to teach swimming to toddlers the indoor pool temp was set at 29-30C. There were always complaints from the lap swimmers that shared the pool that it was too hot, but it needed to be warm for the babies and after standing in the water for a few hours you got cold.

It is because the monsoon trough hasn’t developed and held, so far this year.
The air is collecting and being redistributed from central Au., however it has no moisture, only heat.
Storms to the west of us, heading north, and there’s an easterly blowing from here…this is supposed to be our Wet starting, 2 weeks down and no prospects that I can see…
The chookens are “sharing” their sprinkler with the feral avians, I also have one going out the front for the shyer birds (wrens, finches and honey eaters)…
43C at Charleville, they’ll all be in the Warrego with their eskies…and I mean “in” the river…
Min o’ernight temp of 27ºC and minimum humidity of 65%. Bit of a warm night under the ceiling fan.
Lovely cool 28C here at the mo’…sometimes I wake up and think “I must turn that fan off” but then I realise it’s the breeze…

Lots of cloud makes things easier. I slept in this morning, can’t think why, awoke about 9:20, stuck my hand out into the sun and said “it’s going to be a stinker today”…. haven’t checked if that’s official…

I’m always envious when others get rain.
The weather station is out, it was 38C here at 20:50… sometimes I’ve notice the heat climbs noticeably after 17:00 but usually sorted by 19:00…
Heat wise we have had a good day here. It didn’t get overly hot and we have a cooling breeze blowing. It would be disastrous in a fire though.
Nice and cool after last night’s little sprinkle…didn’t even leave anything in the bird’s feeding dishes but still it was moisture and cooled things off…the temp dropped by 10C just before I went to bed so that was handy, but the 9 o’clock breeze spat the dummy and most of the night was still…if cool…
A storm “event” bypassed us to the west before, there’s another big event to the south west, wish it would move about 100 to the east and I won’t need to water my yard for another month lol!
Our weather has settled down for the time being. it’s 22c here now and there is a very light misty rain happening. It won’t amount to much but anything is better than a what we’ve been having..
been trying to rain the last few days.
40.5C and 8% humidity. Sooo dry. The man and JJ are getting a pizza. I’m not hungry but could go a frozen banana, with cold yogurt :D
About 31C here and dropping, no rain prospects but there’s a tulle skirt around the moon, always a good sign..

Well because I bend over a lot it fills the glasses with a mobile pool of bad focus which makes the head spin and constant wiping of both eyes and glasses scratches the lenses of both and I can’t speak for my glasses but the salt sure stings my eyes.
the cool change had arrived when I went out to attend to the chooks and ducks. Much more pleasant out there now.

The 9 o’clock breeze turned up on the dot…doesn’t turn up if there’s cloud cover…
Strewth it was hot in Sid’s Knee today, poor beggars, they wouldn’t know how to cope and their houses are certainly not built for these temperatures…be standing room only at the beaches I would think…

Has been regularly past 30oC. Sheer madness!!
And last night I slept under just a sheet, no doona, for the 3rd or 4th time this summer.
After today we’re heading for some sensible temperatures in the low to mid-20s. Once it gets past about 29 I just sit still in the spot most likely to catch a breeze because as soon as I move I drip with sweat.

Just need to organise your day…get the physical jobs done early of a morning before the heat hits, and late in the evening when the heat’s dying down…
It used to shock me when I read of the southerners working in their gardens all day during summer…

I’ve been getting in an hour or two in the evenings though. Once the sun goes down enough that I don’t need to have long sleeves rolled down to the wrist and hat on. I think the neighbours might think I’m weird only mowing for half an hour at 7pm a couple of days in a row but it suits me!

I start work before 6 AM and stop when it gets too hot to stay in the sun. This may be as early as 10 AM but on days that don’t get over 35˚C I’ll work at least 6 to 8 hours in the sun.
For example, today I’ve only come home to get bean seeds to go back and plant out in the paddock; Borlotti, Soldier, Mung, Black-eyed, Cannelini.. whatever I’ve got seed of.

Mung beans. Been a while since I’ve seen any, in the stupidmarket anyway. The other day I got the fancy to sprout some and couldn’t find any in my usual haunts. Might see if the health food store in Mansfield have any next time I am there. I had some in hommous at someone’s place and it was yummy. Added a nice fresh nutty taste to it.

Surely we are. Not fully dark till about 8.30pm-ish atm.

I adopted this many years ago. In the winter I can work outside all day (weekends only, the rest of the week has been work up until recently). I rather enjoy the opportunity to lie down and read and nap in the afternoon.

Can never pack my doonas away. In summer I’ll wear summer pjs under one doona but will have the second doona folded up together with a folded sheet somewhere. Hot nights I toss aside the doona on my bed, sleep under the sheet and have the doona on standby. Cold nights I might need the second doona. I know it’s getting back to autumn/winter when I start phasing in thick woolly socks and flannie pjs because the second doona with summer pjs isn’t enough to keep me warm.
My ideal weather is summer pjs (no socks) under a doona at night, barefoot around the house, jeans and tshirt (not hot enough for shorts, not cold enough for a jumper) by day.

Still dry here and hot.. Will be 38 again tomorrow. Hopefully cooling off to lower 30’s for perhaps the next week but little chance if any of rain.
Did I say tomorrow? That’s today and I’ve got to be at work in 4 hours.. tries to drift off to sleep.
Has rained all night. 60mls in the guage so far. Everything looks so different from 48hours ago.
There is no wind happening as yet but predicted to get very wild tomorrow. Around 120km per hour at times. Lots of Q’ld East Coast is flooded and I suppose it will happen here too but small price to pay.
On the other hand I have been watching the bush fires blazing in Vic. A land of drought and flooding rains said Dorothea McKellar. How right she was.

Fireys now have tiny oxygen masks for the little animals. Here anyway, and wildlife savers follow them on the lookout to save any frightened furry things. It’s heart lifting.

I don’t think the CMQ rain guage is measuring, definitely 2 inches here (10 miles away) and the BOM has definitely shown heavy rain over the RioTinto (errr… CMQ aerodrome) guage…

It is indeed…
Light drizzle here, no point checking the BOM for our rainfall result, it will only be a couple of mm…hang on…yep…19mm since 9 am yesterday…
still strong winds, and I notice that ex TC Oswald looks likely to swing inland between Rockhampton and Bundaberg
That storm event (?) is moving inland and then swirling up the north-west, if you get my drift?

Right. Got it.
Up to 130mls now and the worst hasn’t even reached us yet.
2 inches since 9 am yesterday…just a lovely little mist swirling down now, will help with the greening…I noticed one land-holder on the road where I walk, burnt out his entire paddock. The water is lying in little “pot holes” all over the paddock so I hope for his sake it greens up again.
As you can see, this rain event is on the eastern tail end of a monsoonal trough…here

No, I was just looking at “your” radar now…happy for you!
the temperatures have dropped with a cool change last night. only low 30s for the next week and dropping to 23 on Friday! there are rumours that the worst of the heat is over and we might even get an early Autumn. I’m not holding my breath.
currently 24.3C

We really don’t need any more atm. It would be perfect if we could send it on further South or inland. Then we would like a top up in a couple of weeks thanks. Wish we could put in an order just like that.
Don’t know about anywhere else, but the BOM has been knocked out here…
The mobile network in RockVegas was knocked out yesterday. If you had no landline you were cactus. I do believe some landlines were damaged as well, possibly on the northside…did you see the photo of that kid that was caught in Moore’s Creek (I’m assuming that’s where it was)…well that’s a group of lads who now know the term “flash flooding”… it all happens in a flash…
Yep, other radars are working, just not the Emerald one…It looks like a High over NZ is stopping this monsoonal rain event from moving south…they might say moving SSE but the movement is incremental…Agnes Water and Town of 1770 have water, water everywhere…

Anyone who’s ever been to or through RockVegas will relate to this gallery
(Poor buggers)
And ex-TC Oswald is now “just” a Low here
Be nice if it could just go to where the fires are still going, just drench them out…

Awoken to discover that overnight our January rainfall total has increased 20-fold, to 4mm. Eat your heart out Coober Pedy.
Good morning all. I was just looking at the various radars on the BoM, and it looks like Coonabarabran is getting some rain at long last. I’m wondering if Ex-TC Oswald will not be quite so violent now that it’s been “allowed” to stretch out a bit? Never seen such a situation before, where a rain event was basically stationery for about 24 hours…
Just popping in to update the rain readings. 410mls now. Have had friends drop in because they can’t get to their home. Managed to get them into a B&B (up the road a bit) for overnight, tonight.
The bottom of out land is an inland sea. Still a few feet lower than our house though. Trees have been coming down but not on our patch thank heavens. I think we are near the end of the major downpour and the winds have eased.
Power keeps going off and the phones aren’t working too well. Can’t use mobiles here either. Isolated, I think you’d say. Nothing to do but wait it out now.

This is the storm cell that hit Can-bury-ya last night…
i’m back :)
mum was in hospital and have been looking after her to get her back on her feet again, she’s 90, anyway she is feeling much better, i can tell when she starts getting cheeky again :)

Yep a bit moist here as well but cool enough to mow the yard right now…just came up for a cold drink of water plus my hat…

Looks like Ex-TC Oswald is finally going to make it out to sea…
while you northerners are dodging raindrops, there is a fire burning in the Strathbogie Ranges near Violet Town.

No stalking this morning. All Qld radars seem to be out.
Sun is peeping out between the very fast moving clods. Rivers (gullys) running through our property to the dam are still torrents but the heavy rain seems to be over. I’ve had a paddle around the place and we have been lucky because damage is minimal. Getting to a shop will be the next trial but we’re not desperate yet.
We’ll just sit back today and watch the grass grow. Boy, is it going to grow now!

I just read that it’s 35km west of Dalby. A cyclone that doesn’t like the sea I reckon.

Thank God for fire fighters.
I recall some 15(?) years ago or so driving around in Gariwerd (the Grampians) on a drizzly day listening to the radio reporting raging bushfires in NSW. It was sort of surreal.

Were you a fire woman then?
I’m not in the CFA. I can’t manage heat at all, I’d be useless. But we do have everything prepared here at the house. I made sure I got educated after the Ash Wednesday fires.
the fire seems to be staying put but growing (there is little in the way of wind) and is still deemed out of control. Hard to access areas makes it hard for the fireys to get in. Link
Only just got internet back about 45 mins ago, been out since about 19:00 last night. No mobile phone coverage, no landline even! My throat was cut … :p
Went next door and told MrsB that she had no phone, and offered to get someone to come and pick her up if she was worried but she was fine…just happy to know the phone was out as she was expecting a call…she gets about X visitors per day but I was just wondering if she needed to be near communications of a sort, at night.
Her torch is better than mine for when the power goes off…and she can hang it around her neck…

OK. Let me rephrase that. Last night when I found out we had no landlines, I went next door and told Mrs B that the phones were down.
Then I went back just now and let her know it’s back online again. Her dog likes me. I’m the lady with the somewhat smelly marrow bones…

I can so relate to that…They have been burning off since about August here, after the winter rains finished. Nice cool burns for the most part…
Just looking at the weather maps, I think Ex-TC Oswald will continue to slide down the east coast of Australia…

I heard them say on teev that this particular weather pattern isn’t that unusual. And boy oh boy have we been getting a lot of visuals on tv. Now if it happens to get down as far as dry Vic then that would surely be unique. We can hope.
It looks like Ex-TC Oswald is going to leave the country…
No summer today. Top of 20C. But great weather for me, got some hard work to do. Chop the fernery back, keep clearing and cleaning the patio and prune tomatoes of any dying leaf. Pick more eggplants for cooking and drying… they’re coming at me 10 to a doz.
And pick up that oroxine script lol.
I am in the air conditioning. Shadow has separation anxiety quite badly. Might not be able to take him for little trips down town if he’s going to jump out the quite-wound-up car windows.
Was going to sleep before, the humidity is quite high. 45 on the BOM but it feels muggier.
How’s this for a doo-hickey weather radar
Love the swirly bit on the outside…
28C and rising. 85% humidity and hopefully decreasing. This will be a air-conditioner in the study day…I can tell…
15C minimum last night…very pleasant!
The sun is very hot, even now…so hopefully I will get the chookens fed their hot porridge (with fish cat food) by about 10:00, they can rest in the shade after that and go back to lay their eggs when ready.
Summer Light photos, ABC Online
23C here, or at the aerodrome, anyhow…feels colder…79% humidity which is a surprise…but nice…clods threatening but the southeasterly says “no”…
…and it looks like the monsoonal trough has b*ggared off up north…
weather site says 85% chance of 1-5mm (thunderstorm). Not holding my breath, except to hope there are no lightening strikes. So sad about the two firies killed in the Harrietville fire yesterday :(

Some areas of Vic have received up to 30mm but unfortunately there have also been lots of fires started due to lightening strikes.

Oh jolly good about the rain…
No rain, only fires are from stubble burning.
I ordered rain. But we got hailstones, thunder and lightning. I might have to improve my handwriting on my orders.
There was a little rain.
There is 16mm in the gauge! I can’t remember when it last rained, so I guess that must have been in this lot. I’ll still have to go and refill all the water bowls for the birds, but I won’t have to do so much watering tonight. The zucchini leaves are shredded, but most of my veggies look like they are OK.
buffy said:

Gee whiz hope there was no damage from the hailstones?
So, the storms seem to have moved away for now. Here is the view of the backyard during the peak of our hailstorm, around 6.00pm:
I was a bit concerned about my poor little car sitting out in the hail, but there wasn’t a lot I could do about it:
And the road out the front of the house:
did hear Hamilton mentioned on the radio when they were reporting on the storms. Looks like it was a bit more exciting your way than here. No hail here but had the lights go out a few times and a lot of thunder. Just when I thought 1mm was all we were going to get there was a big clap of thunder that spooked the chooks and ducks and they were running and flapping around not knowing which way to go. I went to go out to put them to bed when down it poured. Only for about a minute though but got another 7mm. Forecast for more storms tomorrow. Not going to be any cooler though with the temperature to get to the mid 30s again.
Rain is rain…the moisture in the air would be a help…good photos there Buffy, exciting to see the hail coming down…hopefully they were only little stones and didn’t damage your car?
Almost looks like it’s snowing there Buffy. Hail is pretty, if it doesn’t do any or much damage.
I can’t see any damage to the car……my bike tent, however (which was getting a bit aged) is ripped to bits. My car already had some little dimples from a previous Ice Experience.
:)
Ooh, the fluffy white clouds are forming up like yesterday…….another storm? Someone else can have the hail this time. My receptionist is heading into the Grampians to Halls Gap for a rod run…….I would not be going in there today

thundering again here, Oh! just heard the Fire Truck siren. Looked at the CFA site and there is a small grass fire on Mt Samaria Road which is not far from here. I wonder if it was a lightening strike? There it goes again!
could hear thunder up in the Owen Stanleys yesterday afternoon, but nothing here on the coast. It has been a very dry wet.
well it rained yesterday! Poured down at lunchtime… and then returned late afternoon for a good shower of rain. Currently the sky outside is trying to blue up as the sun is drawing near. 25ºC heading to a top of around 32, 33ºC

I think the monsoonal trough is too far to the north this year…might be good news for those African countries which have had a few consecutive years of drought recently…
I’m home again. Compared to the poor country people in Victoria we are having another severe weather warning here because of torential downpours. I just tipped 60mls out of the guage and heavy rain expected again tonight.
If we could only cast some of it over Victoria. I’m not much help but thinking of you Buffy and BG. You too RB.
Back later.
Raining here, I’m happy to say…we need a sheet of CGI over Goldy’s nest as the cardboard is doing its’ best to collapse.
That monsoonal trough is trying to swing down again

there might be something in that. Have noticed when there is a good supply of local produce here (meaning a good wet) then everyone is well fed and content. Its only when food goes missing that people here get grumpy at each other.
We ended up with 4 inches over the last few days. Would be good if it stopped for a while now. Flooding had been a possibility in some parts but that has been avoided so far. Any more rain and the creeks and rivers will overflow their banks again. It’s only 3 weeks since it last happened.

I was wrong it seems. Bridges are closed here and there. One of the two main bridges in town is expected to go under this afternoon. Our local creek is supposed to be falling now. We’ve been to town his morning and flood waters are heading into the same old spots. Those poor people will have to move everything again if we get more rain. What do I mean “if.” It raining again now.

Don’t know how much we’ve had but it’s settled in for the night, like a proper “wet” should…sorry RoughBarked but you will probably get good winter rain now…
still in the 30s here. had to laugh when the weather report spoke of Melbourne finally getting below 30 after a stretch of 4 or 5 days. Can’t remember how long ago it has been since I have had anything below 30. Talking about weeks here, not days! But that’s the country for you. No ocean right next to you to moderate the temperatures.
Rains is gone. Sun is out. Washing is hung. Now to clean up the other messes.
It looks like that monsoonal trough is contracting to the west, and over the next few days a Very Intense Low will form to the north west of WA…
Nice “Wet” band of rain passing over … bit late in the season but who’s complaining?
Hope the dryland farmers managed to get their crops planted after the rain from late January, but with this lot they’ll have a great moisture profile …
Obviously I can’t even do the !http thing …
We’re still waiting for that severe weather warning to actually happen. They’ve talked about 300 to 400mls, Tornados, floods etc. I’ve been checking BoM radar and I can’t see anything serious happening. I wonder what tomorrow will bring.

More rain I hope. Had a good time in the garden this afternoon, neatening up the garden edges. My late father made a tool (welded) just for this. Handy for edging the gutter also, until I discovered my edging talent with the whippersnipper…Pulling out the panic was the hardest bit, and any couch that I ripped out got dumped on bare patches of the footpath. Bit of rain tomorrow and it might “take”…
It’s arrived. Started around 2 o’clock this morning. Just rain so far. No wind or tornados. If this is the worst of it then we are doing ok.

it’s another scorcher out there. Weather site says 37 but I reckon it’s around the 40s again. Poor chooks are stressed but I am not game to let them out if they are only going to fight again. They’ve had iced water though and hopefully the temperature will drop down again soon.
Later in the week it looks like we are finally going to get temperatures down below 30 and presumably we will have seen the end of this long hot dry stretch. One can only hope.

It hasn’t stopped since 2am. We took a reading of 115mls at 5pm tonight but there would be at least 5 inches by now. Rivers rising everywhere. Parents called in to take kids home from the schools very early in the day. Floods for sure by morning. This will be the 3rd time in 6 weeks.
I feel so bad for the poor people that can’t avoid all the water pouring into their homes and shops..

Later today , BlueGreen…
By the looks of it, even RoughBarked will get some soon, too…
1 mm .. looks to be all I’ll get today.

you see that hole in the middle, between Benalla and Mansfield? That’s where I am! Only 4mm so far.
So you and RoughBarked both use the Yarrawonga radar?

Yep but I need to use the 256 Km one
I also use this http://www.essentialenergy.com.au/content/stormtracker
and this : http://ozforecast.com.au/cgi-bin/weather.cgi?station=Hillston.NSW
and this: http://www.eldersweather.com.au/nsw/riverina/
and measure it all up against this: http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/charts/4day_col.shtml

I do too.. but the Essential Energy storm tracker covers a much larger area.As you see I do apply a broad perspective to my analysis.
to add to that; my closest weather station recorded 3 mm. I could count twenty spots on a spread out Sydney Morning Herald.. in the dust at my place.

Yes there’s often a difference between our weather station and where I live…sometimes we get about half an inch and the weather station says 2 ml…the temperatures are different also…

To further add to that, I do talk to neighbours who do keep credible weather data. My rainfall can differ by from 1 mm up to 20 mm within 200 metres.
cooler and cloudy from the cyclone – i hope those fires are out in victoria.

So do I. It can be hard to see what direction rain is travelling unless you get and overall view. Pity I can’t get D to use it. as well. He can lead me up the garden path so I have to go check for myself.

There’s a definate eye in that cyclone.
a definite eye, yes, someone described it as tightening with no ragged edges, which could mean that it is intensifying.
the times and measurements on that picture are from the US, clearly with different time zones we are in their tomorrow :)
The rain has eased today. There still isn’t any sun but just to be able to stroll around the yard is wonderful. Eases the cabin fever a bit. Nobody can go anywhere because roads and bridges are still in flood. We’ve had 309mls in the last 3 days and 447 over the last 8 days. I’m not going back any further than that.

I have friends in America atm and it’s hard to picture them as talking ‘yesterday’. 6hrs ahead of us but it’s yesterday.

the rain has eased here, flooded roads have pretty much subsided in most parts, but if we were to get a storm soon we’d have a massive flood, no where for water to go
constant light rain here north of adelaide.- it’s a relief to not have to irrigate.

There’s roos camped in the railway reserved across from me…obviously the fettlers didn’t disturb them…
Bleeding ants everywhere…grrr…hope they mean more rain is coming…
CFA site indicates that the Harrietville/Mt Hotham fire where the two young firies died is now under control due to the rain which is predicted to continue through tomorrow.
I’ve had 14mm so far with intermittent rain but looks like there will be more overnight.

I think we’ve all been waiting for that rain down your way…hope it’s a soaker overnight…
I’m pleased the other side of the state is getting rain on their fires……we are not. We’ve had 2.8mm today. The Grampians fire is contained, but not controlled. There are still areas of active fire up there. A hot day and North wind would bring the dragon back to life quite quickly. It’s not forecast to be over hot in the next few days though.

Are you lot down there trying to catch up to me. 16inches + and it’s still raining. Anyway I only found out tonight they I should be registering our falls in mm. I never realised that mls was wrong. Livio taught me that on the weather forecast tonight Strange to live this long and find out how wrong you’ve been all your life..

I doubt we would ever catch up to you! However I got 59mm over two days, 49mm yesterday. Some places got over 100mm and areas of Shepparton have flooded.
and it is COOL! Currently around 15C! Heavenly! Peter Pan was positively frisky this morning, I am sure he was getting sick of the hot weather too in his woolly coat. Max about 25 today. Much more civilised! lol!

I automatically convert the mm into inches, otherwise it doesn’t mean anything…
I think it’s the rather intense High, just west of Tasmania, that’s stopping the rains from getting to Buffy’s area… the tropical monsoon is doing its’ best to move south but the High is stubborn…

The official rainfall reading was 44 mm but that’s taken 20 km away. I tipped out 13 mm after the first shower then tipped out another 40 mm this morn. Has been misting since. The footpaths haven’t dried off though it doesn’t look like it is raining. :)

It’s still not raining here. So I suppose no problems with powdery mildew or other mouldy things!
But it is also cooler, so not such a dragging rate of evaporation going on either.

indeed. I cannot graft plants while they are wet.
I understand how all you southerners are happy to be getting some rain and I am happy for you but I’m over it.
Tried to get into town this morning for an appointment but couldn’t even get onto our country road that leads to town. All the Bruce Highway traffic is using our road to get both North and South. This is a narrow, 2 land road in fairly good condition except for the damage caused in recent floods The Bruce is obviously still flooded and everybody and his dog is trying to get to somewhere by our local roads. I’m talking 36 wheelers and tankers etc. We came back home and will try again tomorrow.
At home everything is stinky. Bath towels, kitchen linen, bedding, lounge fabric etc. Outdoors is also very smelly. Musty and mouldy. Muddy shoes and thongs. Wet towels. Mud mud mud. I’m over it.
How long can the average human body do without sunlight? lol.
I was in Townsville back in 1981 / 1982, when it rained for 19 days straight. The mould was unbelievable. Then it was a sunny day with fine weather clouds. Then it rained for another 5 days straight. I am not talking the occasional showers: this was monsoon stuff, 24/7/19…Even the matchstick blinds got mould…you would not believe where mould can grow…
Shame you can’t get into town on the Bruce…where does your local road go that the semis are using it? We used to go through Gympie and then on to Kilcoy…

Using our local road allows traffic to get through north to Gympie, by-passing the Bruce Highway where it’s flooded. It’s the first time I have been caught out by all that traffic. Perhaps that happens every time it floods round here.

For sure. Just too much rain. Rivers and creeks are still well above normal height so a predicted wet weekend may well be the straw that breaks the camels back. We have to go to Bris tomorrow. We should get through but who knows if we’ll be able to get back.

There’s lots of talk now that the dam should have been built because it would have stopped Gympie from flooding. I doubt it. Wouldn’t have done much good if nobody could get into Gympie because out lying areas were still flooded anyway. No one could get into town to use the shops. Now there is talk of building a levy bank. The Mayor would like to shift the whole town. It gets sillier and sillier.
