Bridge of the airship USS Macon. What’s that fish-shaped object to the left of the steering wheel?

Barf bag?

It appears to be stitched around the edges and an opening into it through the dash.

Anything designed to remove liquid would not need to be so fish shaped, I suspect it was to allow things to be passed between the con and the deck level.

You see how uncomplicated that cockpit is, no blinking lights or ping things or dials or analog recorders or alarms that scream at you PULL UP PULL UP or DO SOMETHING YOU’RE GOING TO CRASH DO SOMETHING YOU’RE GOING TO CRASH like modern stressfull cockpits, it’s just all windscreen, you can see for miles.

Yeah the stitches may be rivets.. and I assume it is a chute for either passing messages or discarding waste.. It certainly can’t be an ash tray.

Considering that the flight deck is under the deck level.. it must be for dropping messages to the ground.

Looking closer, it appears as if there are 4 wingnuts on the inside of the ‘fish’, suggesting there is something like a grate fixed to the outside. maybe it is just a vent.

Considering how fast aircraft were evolving in those days, and how unreliable the engines were at the time, my guess is that it is the evolution fish mechanic.

Interesting. Wonder what is on the dashboard above it – a hole or some sort of instrument?

*If it’s a hole then it could be just a rubbish bin. *It could be part of some kind of instrument to measure the pressure of the gas or something like that – information which the pilot might find useful.

I think the original photo is not of the USS Akron, but the USS Macon instead.

Yup, it’s the USS Macon.

Here is a front view of the gondola that doesn’t really shed any more light on the item, except for maybe suggesting it does not go external to the cockpit.

Yes, you can see the fish from the outside here. As DO suggests, doesn’t really shed any more light on it.

This is one mysterious mystery object.

That’s what I think. A cover for a piece for equipment and someone has hung it there after taking it.
