Subject: What's this bug
On very hot nights, like last night, these bugs emerge in the millions. About 2-3mmm long, slender and winged, they drive me crazy. Even with the house shut up they find their way in, attracted by the lights. Any windows are thick with the ones still trying to get in. Then when I go to bed they keep me awake because it is too hot for covers and they crawl on me, I have even had them in my ears! ARRRRGGGGHHHHH!
The next morning they are still hanging around, mostly trying to get out again.
Does anyone recognise it?

I thought they might be flying ants, but they’re definitely not…

no not ants, and not beetles either because they don’t have hard wing covers.

no I haven’t, I’ve kinda been waiting for roughbark to come on as I find him very knowledgable about such things.
The are still bugging me, pardon the pun. Those that got into the house still haven’t died off and I have to check every thing before I use it and still get the odd one crawling on me (URKKKK!) they don’t bite thank God, but they are still a pain.
When making my breakfast I carefully flicked off the few I found on my bowl, and still had to fish two more out of my noodles when I was making it! At least they would have been well cooked! lol!

Yuk. I wonder if they would stick to fly paper? Might lessen their number at least.

good thinking. I’m going shopping today so will try that out. They are attracted to light colours, that much I know.

not thrips, they are longer, harder and don’t have fringed wings. I know thrips, and these are not.

well I didn’t get any sticky fly tape. forgot to look at Mitre10 and the discount shop, and WW didn’t have any and I didn’t want to go back to the others again. I know I saw them somewhere once though.

They arrive before a storm and disappear the next day.

or rather, they enter the house the night before a storm and hang around the lights, fill up the bed or the bath or the toilet bowl, under a light. Are extremely irritating because they can’t fly very well and will suck on anything.. sounds more thrip like than anything.
Thrips vary. There are thousands of species and some range up to 14 mm long (mainly the predatory ones)

Same here but we still aren’t sure which bug.. perhaps from Hemiptera?
