Subject: Hi I am a newbie, here is my first enquiry

I have a pretty green thumb and live in a temperate/sub tropical microclimate with many tropical foliage plants near the ocean.

I have tried MANY times to grow, in a hanging basket

PlantFiles: Tahitian Bridal Veil, Variegated Wandering Jew
Gibasis geniculata

with at first great success, then they suddenly just go brown and die.

What is my problem?

I consistently water, feed occasionally and pray

Afterall it is blooming Wandering Jew!!!!

Try less water. Move to other side of house away from salt spray.

I don’t have much success with hanging baskets either.

Like roughbark said it could be over watering, or the water is not penetrating and you have a dry rootball. Symptoms can be the same as the end result is dead roots. When you water, do you test the potting mix for wetness?

Try immersing the whole basket in a bucket of water. Allow enough time for water to penetrate all areas. If bubbles come up then the plant is dry somewhere. Go through this process occasionally. Possibly once a month. At other times just water in your normal way.

This will solve the problem if dryness is the cause.

This plant despite its origins detests waterlogging. Yes water it once with a complete soak and allow it to dry out between soaks.

my daughter has a successful pot collection – she uses those water crystals – and she repots every year – hanging baskets dry very quickly so this might help
