Feeding birds

Despite being commonplace overseas, particularly in the UK and North America, the feeding of birds is a controversial practice in Australia. Many people take great pleasure from feeding birds, yet there are concerns about the impacts of feeding on the birds themselves.

Birds in Backyards is supporting this survey as part of PhD research at Griffith University, examining why people feed birds (comparing findings in Australia and the UK). Investigations will be made into wildlife feeder’s connection with nature and what impacts this has for an individuals conservation values. In addition to this, gaining an understanding of feeding attitudes will help to formulate best feeding practice guidelines in Australia.

Therefore we are looking for people who currently take part in feeding birds in their own gardens or elsewhere to complete this simple survey.

Purple Monkey Dishwater

The text is a copy and paste from the Birdlife link asking people to conduct an online survey for a PhD student, with a link to the questionnaire which has been designed for unambiguous answers and statistical analyses.

The only deliberate animal feeding I do is to occasionally put out meat leftovers (the roast bone with some meat left on it etc), which are sometimes taken by ravens, sometimes by the neighbour’s cat, and sometimes probably by the possums.

I usually have lunch on the veranda and throw rind, bits of sanga crust or what not onto the lawn. A raven, magpies or sparrows usually get them, otherwise the ants. It is not regular and usually nothing more than a few scraps if they get anything at all.

My dad used to feed cockatoos at his place but stopped after a short while. He noticed if he was late, whilst they were hanging around they would start destroying his decking.

– perhaps they may head to the link and do the online survey. Perhaps not. But none-the-less we’ll be regaled by tales of breadcrusts and bones, seed and scones, daring do and poo, “I’m not a feeder, I just throw scraps on the lawn” to “they’re my only friends and they eat better than I and sometimes they tell me stories”…

We have three people in our street that feed the cockatoos. Occasionally I think about stopping to talk to them about the damage that they are doing. But when someone has a set up for it, you might be just wasting your breath. But I could give them the link and see if they would do that. All for science and all.

Awful lot of questions along the lines of “How hippy would you describe yourself, where 7 = extreme hippy?”

I had some friends who fed the birds on their place (to my surprise actually)
I am not sure if they would describe themselves as hippy, but we are talking about a man who changed his last name to Dolphin.
