Just saw this browsing through the news websites, thought it might be worth sharing.

The UK’s National Archives is asking Australians to help identify thousands of Colonial era photographs and drawings Many of the photos have limited or no descriptions. They’ve posted a whole lot up on Flickr, for people to have a browse through and leave comments.

Follow the link for your state. I didn’t leave any comments myself, but found it fascinating to look through.

Trouble is, that most of the people who could have identified people and places etc.. are dead.
My parents and grandparents and great-great, my in-laws etc.. all dead.

I identified one place, and I’m not dead.

It’s sad when old family photo collections end up on eBay, because the people in the pictures are no longer remembered by anyone.

Good stuff.
The post office in Brisbane hasn’t changed and the bottle tree at Taroom is a bloody monster, probably well gone now.

there were a few WA photos tagged as Flag Street. Given the location of churches and the town hall which still exist the place was identified as what is now called Hay Street. That’s the sort of stuff they are after.

So far it looks like the only things in NSW are sheep and cattle.

I used to go through them at the markets in Sydney, a seller used to have shoe boxes full of them. I don’t think I purchased any but I found them interesting. I suppose they would be of interest to people looking at cars and architecture cos people always posed with the new car and in front of the house. It would be a bonus to come across shots from wars, or aboriginals but I suppose they would have already been weaned out.
