For some weeks now I’ve been sensing a certain vague numbness on the right side of my face, particularly in regard to muscles controlling the right corner of the mouth. Late last year I had a few very sharp head pains of short duration, seemingly located above the right eye. I’m thinking I might have had a minor stroke. What methods would be used to diagnose such things?

Ta Mrs SS :)
I’m wondering what else there could apart from a stroke be that could cause this sensation of numbness. It’s not always noticeable but when it is it can be quite irritating.

I’ll make an appointment. I’ve always been aware of a certain lack of symmetry in my facial muscle responses (which is probably very common) but it definitely seems more marked lately.

I have mentioned before my neighbour not much older than me had a bad stroke. He is out of hospital now but his home is being visited by vans with mobility aid and such on the side. But the thing is, told to my gardener by his wife was he thought he was feeling a bit dodgy the day before but being blokish thought it would come good, he went to work the next day and keeled over all funny and dribbling. He had been in hospital about five weeks.
I have no intel how things would have gone if had decided to go to hospital the first time he felt dodgy.

Good suggestion, DA. Now that I think of it, there has been some (very minor) twithching on that side of the face. And there’s definitely moisture loss from the right corner of the mouth (not visible, but I can feel it). And some sense that the eye is affected but it’s very hard to determine in what way. (That’s the irritating thing about this, there are sensations that are very hard to describe but which are definitely “there”). Also had a lot of dryness in the mouth recently that’s hard to cure by drinking water.
1. Bell’s Palsy
Bell’s Palsy is a form of temporary facial paralysis, caused by damage or trauma to the facial nerves. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, about one in every 5000 people in the United States is said to suffer from Bell’s Palsy annually. The exact cause behind this condition, however, remains unclear. Scientists believe that it could be triggered by viral infections like meningitis or herpes. These infections lead to inflammation of the facial nerves that cause numbness.
Symptoms
•Twitching
•Paralysis on one or (rarely) both sides of the face
•Drooping of the eyelid and corner of the mouth
•Drooling
•Dryness of the eye or mouth
•Taste impairment
•Excessive tearing in the eye on the affected side

I have no clue if legitimate or not but I recall some precaution in taking an asprin if you suspect you have had a stroke before calling the ambulance? Actually in writing that it sounds dodgy, an asprin couldn’t do anything before the ambo arrived and they will give you one based on expert opinion.

This is unlikely to be an emergency :)
Unless it was a minor stroke last year presaging me dropping dead at any moment from a much more major one. But I’m thinking now it’s probably some palsy thing.

Just ring the ambos for acute care and transport and let the consultants at the ED decide on brane imaging (CT, MRI) and the course of treatment, and if that involves IV thrombolytics..

Some years ago I had similar symptoms, numbness in my right cheek , often when I was tired. convinced I had a brain tumour :)
My GP tickled my face with a tissue, left and right and asked if it felt different.. “no because it’s not happening right now”. Being in London, and in the NHS he wouldn’t send me for further tests, he just said “Come back if it doesn’t get better”. It didn’t and when I went back he said, “come back if it gets worse”
One day I was driving, and numbness was starting on my right cheek and I was instinctively rubbing it. I had a friend in the passenger seat who asked if I was getting numb there… .. “Sit up straight, you’re slouching “ she said and I was. I habitually hunched over the wheel when I was tired and as I sat up straight it went away.
I guess it was pinching a nerve. It might be worth checking that sort of thing, but make sure you go to a doctor too.

Ta pommiejohn, I’m suspecting it’s some sort of nerve thingy too, which may well clear up. It’s not noticeable at the moment which may well be thanks to the combination of wine & anti-inflammatory :)

I usually wipe it down with a wet cloth after the scraping’s been done. Rinse out the cloth thoroughly afterwards, or it could turn into a disaster.

Depends on the paint you’re stripping. The high sticky oil content in some of the paint on that cupbard meant that I needed to clean it down with turps.
