Subject: PDF File Download Issue

I could log in to the other website to ask this question but thought I’d start here first, its just quicker

)

Ok, This issue is with one website and one website only.

I have a subscription to a service in Australia, their office’s are in Melbourne and I believe their web servers for their website are also in Australia.

So, I log in too my account page to download the latest report, which are always in pdf format.
Usually only 1.5MB – 3MB in size, quite small files

I select save > the download process starts and I can see the file download progress as it downloads, then, it just stops, always at exactly 70% complete!
I can let it sit there for 10 minutes but it will not resume, so I cancel and start again, download starts, gets to 70% and just stops.

I give up, log off.

Come back the next day, try again, exactly the same problem.

I have been tooing and froing with their customer service dept via email for months and they say they have forwarded my problem to the “technical dept.” but they come back and tell me that because no one else has reported this problem it must be an issue at my end.
I think it is their end.

The only technical suggestion they sent was to change a setting in my browsers “ manage add-ons” for the adobe pdf link helper, but it made zero difference.

I think it has something to do with my account page on their website and how it connects to their server.

Any thoughts?

Yeah, try another browser that allows you to resume aborted transfers.

Also, do you have the space on the drive you are downloading to?

Yep it is something your end. Tried installing IP Net Monitor?
Tried disabling all add ons?

From my experience.. older versions of Firefox are no longer supported. Yet the system we may have installed is not able to utilise newer versions of Firefox.

Though with pdf.. there should be no problem other than any code the website has that may want you to open the file in your browser.

roughy,

I only have issue with the one website.
I download pdf files from the internet all the time, including logging in too other accounts.

It dowsn’t matter if I download “save file as” or “open file”

Also both of these actions work with other website in this browser without problems

yeah

but the particular website may still have upgraded itself to outside your capacity to use it.

For example// something happened to these hyperforums but only to the SSSF part that made my firefox unable to see chat.. to be unable to see newer or older topic posts in the left hand topics column. I manage it in another browser now.

Aquila, I’d recommend a portable version of a browser:

http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/google_chrome_portable

It does not rely on any system stuff, stands alone, and can easily be deleted if you don’t like it.

Then why does the process even start?
It gets to 70%

Hmm, are you suggesting that out of the tens of thousands of subscribers (yes that’s accurate) the I am the only person using this version of IE8 which is not compatible with their website.

I gave them details of my browser and they did not suggest this to be the issue.

It could be a server issue between you and them. IP Net Monitor should show stuff up.

I’ve actually been intending to try Google Chrome anyway, when I get around to download it, so will see how it works. I may try IP net monitor after that.

Nobody too this point has been able to give me a decent reason why the issue is at my end.

I’ll be very surprised if using Chrome resolves the issue.

Well “at your end” may be anywhere between you and the area of their responsibility.

The portable version of a browser is fully self contained, so does not rely on java and stuff already installed on your computer as other installable browsers do.

But yeah, Chrome is pretty neat. Now you have two browsers, you can use facebook on one browser, and block facebook cookies on the one you use for the rest of your normal browsing.

It starts d/l the pdf file and gets to 70% and just stops dead

When I installed Chrome the other it worked fine for the website I was having issues with, no it has exactly the same issue as the other browsers

and only with a specific website
