I bought a slow cooker at Aldi last week and haven’t used it yet.
Any tried and tested recipes greatfully accepted.

I use a wok as a slow cooker because of its flexibility..
My general template:
Get it pretty warm and saute some chilli and/or garlic and/or ginger and/or galangal and/or chopped onion with some spices (madras curry powder sometimes) in GOOD olive or peanut oil.
I’m vegetarian (others might choose to use meat) so I then get some vegies like spuds, carrots, pumpkin, sweet spud, turnip and give them a saute n the spicy oil.. If you use cabbage it bulks it up heaps, cheaply.
Then cut the heat right down, put in lots of vegie (you heathens can use chook stock..) stock and a good dose of coconut milk/cream perhaps.
I let that slowly simmer for a few hours… The longer the better.
Serve on steamed jasmin or basmati (or brown long grain..) rice..
One batch of this in the wok gives me feeds I can freeze that keep me going for ages!
Forgot to say.. If you do the hot part in a pan you can use the slow cooker for the second part of my template recipe..
I bowowed one yesterday to try it b4 I choose to buy one

Apricot chicken……..:D
great for slow cooking those cheaper meats to melt in your mouth tenderness, and I also use one for cooking corned beef.
pork cooked in milk
if you get into slow cooking, perhaps the budget fairy will allow for a Chaseur pot. they’re fab for slow cooking.

That’s one I’ll definately try. Everyone tells me to try it cooked in ginger beer.

The instruction book warns not to use milk or cream except at the end. Maybe it doesn’t get hot enough to stop it going off?
A batch of good homemade stock will be on the menue too.

it just so happened that today Maggie Beer’s (Cook & Chef) pork in milk recipe was re-run on TV. talk about co-incidence.

Another thing I love but the family isn’t keen. I’m going to try a Pork Adobo, it’s the national dish of the Philippines and I love it when we have it at my stepmums gatherings. Trouble is they can’t tell me exact amounts because they just seem to throw it together, so I’m relying on the net and there’s so many variations.
Well I cooked tea in it the other night—wasn’t impressed no different to doing a caserole in the oven—I don’t cook them that much —just every blue moon—so I am glad I never bought one—as I am not all that keen on stewed food—and I can’t eat chicken unless it is roasted and hot—hate it all soft and muchy. I do cook some nice soups in winter but I do them in a huge pot as all my friends want some when I do.

they come into their own if are out all day and you can come home to a cooked meal. If you are at home anyway then they have less value. But they are probably cheaper to run than an electric oven.

I’m not a fan of slow cookers, they seem to make meat too soft and I have found in the past that in the end all meals taste the same – no matter what you’re cooking. They do have a place for those out all day I suppose.

Yes I can see the value then—
Is that ‘breed’ or ‘feed’ with a large slow cooker?
