I know I haven’t been that regular on here of late, but I have noticed that Justin has been quiet…. has he changed his handle once again or has he shrivelled up in that summer sun of his?

Oh and speaking of others, bumped into Longy in the Stupidmarket the other day… I reckon’ he’s getting taller.

Justin has been MIA. Longy taller? we will have to call him Extra-Longy!

WE all had to option to stick with the old photobucket until now. they tell us that it is too late now.. we all have to use the new PB.

I’ll say GAGF and ask them for all my images back from an easy .ftp type download link.

Thanks. My images are mostly just from my backyard. Not a great deal different in that way, from yours.

Did you think my real name was roughbarked? ;)

Nay I’ve been given many nicknames, but it was me who picked roughbarked. ;)

It isn’t like I cannot be backtracked to my real name. Particularly via Flickr but no, I have never actually given them my real name.

I dunno about ‘properly’. Reasonably, within limits of the time space paradox, yes. But properly may be an overestimation.

‘rootbound’ would work, yes. I have only moved 12 km from my birthplace in 60 years.

and also in this case:

just walked out my back door to the car.. Got the esky out to put the ice back in the fridge for tomorrow morn. Walked to the backdoor and had to backstep a pace to allow a brown snake to get off my doorstep and zoom off into my garden.

Flickr recently gave me 3 months premium usage on all free accounts. But by signing up it simply means that they’ll be asking me to pay for the account at the end of the three months..

The cueys do look a bit like zucchs in that photo…fancy they can be used as a substitute for zucchs in some recipes!

I’m not laughing. Flickr don’t make it easy for people to copy links for posting, yet at the same time they do. It is a matter of going through the correct hoops. There are two ways of displaying images here from Flickr. Firstly, when the image loads, there is a ‘share’ tab just above the image. Clicking on this will give a drop down options window. There will be three choices. Go to the ‘grab the html/BB code’ selection, click on it and a window will open with the code to share the image in it. Under that there will be another tab with small medium large size(select medium and the code in the window will change). Below that are two buttons labeled; html and BB code. Select the html one and the code in the window will change again. Click in the window on the code. This will highlight all the code in the window. Use Cntrl/C to copy and then just paste it into this message window. The result will be a medium sized image displaying here both in preview and post modes. You can check this by previewing before posting. The image will be outlined in in bold greenas a link highlight because all that code in the window will also allow clicking on the image to go to the flickr page the image is on. However, Flickr won’t work perfectly with this forum coding so if you wish to click on the image to go to the page it is wise to right click and select ‘open link in new window’. Alternatively you can paste the hrml code copied from Flickr as shown above and then delete all of that code bar the actual image link. However for this to display here, the link will need the !image link! surrounding exclamation marks. ie:

The second way to show Flickr images here is to go to the ‘Actions’ tab(to the right of the share tab, above the image on Flickr). One of the actions under the tab will be ‘All Sizes. Click on this and when the all sizes page loads, select the size you want to display and then right click on the image and copy the image location, which you then paste here. This image link will not display without the exclamation marks. ie:

hum.. these indicate that I tried to show ! http://example.com/image.jpg !

All the Flickr html code isn’t entirely necessary as it also includes both a link back to the page and a link back to the page owner. ie:

< a href=“http://www.flickr.com/photos/99559986@N00/8493032585/” title=“DSC_4862 by roughbarked, on Flickr”>< img src=“http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8527/8493032585_9a45d3dfd9_z.jpg” width=“640” height=“428” alt=“DSC_4862”>

of all that, all you really need is this part: < img src=“http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8527/8493032585_9a45d3dfd9_z.jpg”/> but you’d need to remove the space I put in before_img src to get this:

yep the tumeric is a ginger like tuber with that single stem in the mid frame.
to the left is stinging nettle growing for the first time since spring
and on the right is chicory – now a weed here but popular with the bunnies – so a kind of decoy.

Where did you source the seeds?

I find it hard to believe the beans aren’t producing as well, was there water issues when they were first growing?

just checking – and i did forget to mention the first step – right click action and then click ‘open link in new window’.

this is a late planted lebanese zucchini that is growing but not producing any zuchs – which is the same story for the beans

Well if it doesn’t produce fruit, you can always use the flowers!!!

i can’t believe beans can grow for a whole season and not produce pods !!
i’m getting old for saying this but – “you live and learn”

It is not all that uncommon for beans not to fruit in hot weather but this is still the worst year in my gardening history for: no has beans.

Where did you source the seeds?

I’ve measured my beans at 2.6 m tall and flowers everywhere, no beans.

Is it a pollination problem? Bees? Other insects?

I have beans, but they are only just starting to set now. I tend to just go with whatever chooses to want to grow each year. My tomatoes are only just setting fruit now.

Yes. You reliably get late season fruit set. To get it earlier.. you need the water to make the soil black.

i have picked a few beans and tomatoes – so not pollination (plenty bees) – i used rainwater as per normal in spring but mains (chlorinated and flourinated) now.
i have had two successful years prior to this one and i have done all things similar this year – but hey – v.little produce??

Yep.. all round low productivity. Some things did well.. I’ve probably eaten or processed 60 kg of tomatoes but you always get that when you open a new bed for tomatoes.. Mind, the size of fruit was way down on the scale of things.

The Very Thing!! For when a wheelbarrow just doesn’t suit…

precisely – the wheelbarrow is difficult to wheel, hold steady and load because of its height, single wheel balance. whereas this cart is child’s play.

We’ve got one of those trollys but ours is wire sided. Such a handy gadget. D pulls it behind the ride-on when he picks up all the fallen branches and sticks before he can mow. Also uses it to cart the pump down to the dam when he has to fill the tank. We use it a lot round here.

i saw those steel ones – they are better but three times the price and non-tippers. they are better because – the sides unpin and flap down – and steel will unlast plastic.

worldwide we have been breeding chook for 10K years so there is bound to be a lot of variation.

my christmas calendar was ‘goats in trees’. photos from all over the world of goats walking up and all over big, bent tree trunks and branches to reach the leaves.

Tahitian limes can be picked almost any time they are full sized. They are sweetest when the skin is yellow.

I have started autumn planting. – kifler spuds from last year’s crop in today..
i have mowed over a failed corn crop – giving space for some quick growing late summer crop before the chooks are moved into that pen.

i know i want – broad beans, spinach, broccoli, celery, carrots, lotsof peas………..plus?

i’ve got two pistachio trees on order and need to prepare the holes for them as well…..

strawberries were replanted last year so not a lot to do this year.
…add to the list – leeks and onions.

if you want good spuds -
1. choose variety – q’ld. dept of ag is your friend.
2. plant a green manure crop now and let it grow for the next 6 weeks
3. add fert (incl potash) and turn in green manure crop – then plant.

they will need watering in the ‘dry’ – so choose a sprinkler and make the bed so the throw of water matches the bed size..

that might sound a bit daunting so i should add that there are 3 grades of spuds i plant each year

- the first cost nothing and are the ones shooting in your pantry. you may as well plant these any where any time.

- the second are small unwashed spuds from the grocer that you buy to plant. these will yield well and are worth preparing soil for and should be planted as part of a rotation system.

- then there are the certified spud. these cost $9 per kilo and therefore require a return of at least 10:1 to breakeven. spuds here cost about $2 per kilo, so the cost of certified is five times the cost of just buying them to eat. in order to get 10:1 return you need prepare the soil well in advance and spoil the crop, with constant irrigation twice a week, for about 5 months (maybe 4 months in q’ld). getting a 10:1 return is possible and you can plant the babies next year.

That is all excellent information, thanks Justin. I was thinking I would give potatoes a red hot go this year. chooks or no…sometimes I think I’ll start a garden in the back allotment because the chooks are “supposed” to go there but they don’t, lol!
