This article has just come up on the ABC news site:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-02-23/new-sailing-record-for-sydney-hobart-passage/4535982

This prompted me to question, why hasn’t a boat like this won the famous race. I’ve looked at the wiki entry on the StH, and also at the ‘rules of racing’ and can’t find anything that precludes a trimaran from competing. The time set overnight is about 12 hours faster than the best ever race time.

So why isn’t a boat like this entered into the race?

I am pretty sure there is a calculation about the hull characteristics for handicapping in the ruwels.

I don’t know anything about the tech specs or rules but I do know you need the right conditions for breaking a record. I guess those weather conditions haven’t been conducive to the boxing day race record o be broken like this?

That would be a calculation for ‘lhandicap winner’, what about ‘line honours’ ?

Sorry, that was the limit of my knowledge. But I was posted at Martiime School where it was always a good showing on the harbour at the race preamble.

I have been out on the harbour a few times at the start of the race. It is absolute mayhem!

I don’t think the chaps at the Yacht Squadron would let any chaps with a dodgy boat enter the race anyway.
Once a boat was seen to be disproper the chaps would have the chap who owns the boat straight out to dinner, no mucking around.
