Happy Autumn everybody :)
Wow, March already.
It might be a drs visit for me after the brick/blocks arrive, for a sore foot. Something bit me just above my ankle last friday whilst sitting at a picnic table for the orchard meeting. I saw somthin, just brushed it and it flew off. There were 1000s of soldier beetles and other insects flying about so I didn’t pay any attention to it. It wasn’t a bee, I would have noticed a bee. But got home and boy was it itchy. I had blunstone boots on. Out with the pawpaw cream and relief was almost instant. I kept applying x2 a day and the swelling/itchiness went away. But even tho’ the bite site is fine, now my whole foot is sore.. limping, can walk on it slowly but can’t twist my foot as in to turn around or step on an uneven surface eg; a step or large garden border rock, ouch ouch.
Whatever it was also must have had decent snipers/stinger/fangs as managed to bite me through two thick layers of clothing. One being the tight thick brown edema stocking and other, a thick wool sock. Bugga.
Work doesn’t stop, chooks want their brekky then I’ll have mine.

so who’s planting what this winter?
those in cold temperate climes should plant parsnips and brussel sprouts.
i’ve got the edge on spuds in my frostfree zone but parsnips and sprouts are tasteless here.

Unless my brushing it off sent it flying, not sure. I made an appt to see my doc later this arvo.
Morning all. Just a quick “poke my head in the door” visit. Just a tad a wet around here. Waiting for the rain to ease off so I can go and check the rain gauge :)

First up I need garden beds…before that I need to restrain the chooks from planned garden beds. I would like to use the beds out the front but the grey nomads have thieves among ‘em ….

i noticed you’ve been having a brush with fires and rain down in sthn nsw.
Came in for a quick chat but got caught up and now no time…heading away for the weekend to help train new Girl Guide leaders. Oh well will catch up with you all at some stage I guess.
Bye from a very wet Wandandian
Went to town this morning following yesterdays cancelled trip. What a mad house in there!!! I’d say that everyone is trying to restock after the last flood and all are trying to get prepared if the wet weekend raises all the flood levels again. From the elderly (not us of course) the infirm, to Mums and babies, all trying to buy what was no longer available on the supermarket shelves. A rat race. Glad we are home again.
HP, could you have twisted your ankle or something without noticing? The other day I tripped in the garage onto my knee that always cops it when I trip, but a couple of days later my heel was hurting as well. It just took a while to become apparent that I had injured it as well. It might be though that whatever bit you left some residual poison behind.

…and how much of it will be thrown out? Having had to “stock up” a few times, I aim for non-perishables (long life milk, milk powder, tinned goods and such) that I can use as emergency supplies long after the current emergency is over. I’m sure a lot of folk just grab what’s there and hope for the best. Toilet paper and pet food is another…
Aw heck no, 70 is the new 50, just ask me lol!

Wasp sting according to my doc and his book of sting photos and his magnifying googles. I know it wasn’t yellow, definitely black, so probably a black flower wasp. I have a localised bite site but spreading inflammation and have to take a steriod tablet course.
The doc was impressed with the pawpaw cream keeping the pain and swelling down.
I have had heel bruising in the past and that really hurts. I keep good footwear on all the time now.

Wasp stings can have strange results. Paper wasp (mud wasps up here don’t sting) bites, up here, can be soothed with ice but the site itches for about a week.
I got stung by a centipede once, everybody said “oh it’s nothing” but it had got stuck between the block of wood and my hand…my hand looked like a filled glove within a couple of hours, lasted all night, I was given pethidine for the pain…P had to milk the cow and I was miffed cos he did a better job than me but I digress…I think I got all the centipede’s poison as it couldn’t get away (stuck under the wood), I could feel about 4 – 5 stings, one after the other…that’s why I had such a swollen hand…

Back when I was in labour with my firstborn, the pethedine was not so effective…didn’t bother with painkillers for the last four…
Chookies fed and watered, more tomatoes picked from very sorry looking bushes and picked two more pumpkins. I’m taking them from parts that are dying back, but there’s other new vines springing forth from the recent rain that have many fem flower buds.
Brekky for me now then I have an orchard monthly meeting to attend.
Morning. We have ringside seats to the avalon air show. Just stand in the backyard and watch all the areal acrobatics and fomation flyovers.
I’m pulling tomatoes out and planting the ground with barly.

Yes, barely, sorry, green manure. Once it comes up high enough I’ll let the chooks in to do the turnover work for me.
The helicopter formation was impressive!
I look like I just stepped out of the shower and I’m dripping wet. But I’ve only been out working in the sun. Inside now until it cools down a bit. The chooks are having a blast in the now bare tomato beds.
There wasn’t any signs of nematoes on the roots, so I was quite wrong about that. Now to go and ponder why they died back so fast. After my brain cools down a bit.

I suppose it’s not all that far, as the crow flies, from your place to the Avalon airstrip…Tiger Airways used to advertise super cheap trips from RockVegas to “Melbourne”…and you were on your own once the plane landed…
Hello Gardeners. We have been to Melbourne for Long to meet my family. And this morning he did a walk through the Victoria Market for socialization purposes (and so we could buy duck, chicken and pork belly). Then we came home via Pyalong for him to call in on his breeder for a check on progress. Apparently he is quite excellently Puggy.
:)
My tomato plants look very dessicated. They haven’t been watered since Thursday night, and according to the BOM site there was gusty stuff around 50km/hr for a large part of the day here yesterday. So they’ve had buckets to the base and I’ve turned on the low pressure sprinklers …. probably for an hour or so. Only on those the sun is off now for the day.

A lot of travelers get confused thinking they are going to Tullamarine and end up in Avalon. There was a time when some rellies were coming to visit and they were arriving in Melbourne by plane within half an hour of each other and we thought great, we would only have to make one trip to pick them up. Only it ended out they were arriving at the two different airports and we ended out having to send two cars out to collect them.

My sister in law, the rich one that watches every cent she spends that’s not on herself, paid for a Tigers flight to Melbourne…oh my goodness P’s Dad shoved it down our necks, how astute with her $$$ was L???? I was rubbished because at about the same time, I flew down with Qantas to visit Ragamuffin at Portland, changeover of planes (same airline) at Brisbane and it all went smooth as silk. Arrived at Tullarmarine and the excellent bus service got me to Spencer Street station in plenty of time for my excellent train/bus service to Warrnambool…OH the $$$ I could have saved!!! (said FIL) Well I checked the internet, having got my bearings from this trip, and said to P “Avalon Airport is out in woop woop. You have to catch a taxi (as near as I could tell) to the railway station, entrain to Melbourne, then I don’t know how L got to Phillip Island from there?” In the nighttime this was.
She said it was a nightmare (and she is from Melbourne) and she’s not flying Tigers again.
We woke up to these “cheap” flights when Fashionista was in Germany on Rotary Youth Exchange. That’s when we found out that “XYZ Airport” (for example, can’t think of the airports involved) didn’t necessarily mean in XYZ itself, it’s probably 20 miles away and, like for Avalon, you spend what you saved in airfares, on taxi fares.
Sending a car out to Avalon would have given the rellies plenty of time to catch up on the goss before arriving at your place, BlueGreen!!!
Just saw a fb status update by Fashionista: #1: Racing Goldfish in their stables #2 “It’s really hard to take a good photo of Goldfish Racing”….
I know, I’ve got a really weird sense of yumour…

Well for a trip that took 16 hours (including the run from Warrnambool to Portland), it was hassle-free. I had pre-booked and pre-paid my train fare both ways.
Another way of looking at it is, SIL only got the air fare’s worth in her journey.
I do recall being glared at on the return train journey, not knowing that the seats on the morning commuters are allocated. Went and checked with the guard eventually. Neither the train nor the bus had allocated seats on the western journey, a Sunday afternoon affair.
To encourage the goldfish to race, you blow with a straw (don’t tell PETA, this is sure to be traumatic to the goldfish and their 2-second memories somehow) …the racecourse is a very long, shallow and narrow aquarium…
Had a beer or two with Longy yesterday afternoon. Had a good chat too.
Good morning Gardeners. I think I have revived the plants. Now they just have to get through another week of over 30 degrees. Still, fits with my personal theory that tomatoes here are really Autumn fruiters.

If protected from frosts, I can grow them year round here. I do believe, tho;, in the winter I need to have them established at a particular point before the cold nights start…

White Cliffs grows great tomatoes in the winter, if I’m there all winter. I can grow tomatoes most of the year here but getting fruit to ripen when it isn’t hot enough to boil the fruit on the vine is a bit of a problem. Frosts get severe enough to kill tomato plants for at least July if not up to all winter. Depends on quite a few factors, not the least the severity of the winter. I find that self sown tomato plants usually survive the winters.
My tomatoes have fruited well right through the season.. not staked. All bush type or some sprawling cherry types, mulched with hay bales that chooks have roosted on. What I find with the late season, if my tomato plants survive that long is that the shield bugs give me curry by ruining every tomato. I’ve never found an easy way to not have shield bugs. If it isn’t the slaters ringbarking the plants or the sun scalding the bark then it is the shield bugs pricking every sq mm of skin and sucking.

>>Stiff breeze?<<
Thirty degrees in the shade (so quite a bit more in the sun), humidity down around 30% (which is high for here!) and a mild breeze. We do not need wind. The dragon is still hunkered down in the Grampians, 60km North of us.
Well, so far I can report that our new cafe does a good cappucino, iced coffee and a rather nice lemon friand. Going there for lunch on Sunday, so I’ll have to report on the main course type stuff after that.

we’re the same – when the clothes are hung it’s time to bring them in.
i’ve opened the pool before 5pm today. ….and replaced the clinging t-shirt with a normal shirt.
i have stocked the fridge with ice and just had a non-alco. lemonade.
the buddlejas are done – the weight should be rolling off because the sweat certainly is….
Ooh, look! I go and have a lie down and fight off the puppy for a snooze and look what happens 14km down the road. It’s quite big. But going away from us. We have no smoke smell whatsoever. And the fire radio has been completely quiet. I wonder if it is not working or something.

I’m home again and it’s still wet here. Some sun now and again but rain still happening. Gympie had another moderate flood over the past weekend. It didn’t reach the town centre this time.
Our grass has reached ankle height in a few short days. All the paddocks in the area are as green as you’ll ever see them and that’s a good thing I guess. the river and creek beds are a right mess. Mud, logs and rubble caught up everywhere. Nasty to see. Now they are warning of a potential cyclone forming after this week. We need it like a hole in the head.
Just hope we can remember the lovely green grasses when the dry sets in for winter.
I haven’t read posts from the last few days but lets pretend that I have. Loved the swan cuties from BG.
We will communicate again in a day or two. Probably won’t be tomorrow. More appointments to keep. Just be good till I return.

He’s doing well. Popped into his office yesterday to have a sticky beak at what he actually does for a crust. Very interesting ‘twas too.

I must admit that photography was a bigger part of my life at the time. Many of my ‘baby shots’ were actually prize winners.

Morning! Although it’s fast disappearing. Not talking about the weather today. Just had the TV man here to set me up with some wireless headphones so I can hear teev like other people. Wonerful. Mind you, it cost heaps.
Had the second needle in my eye yesterday and although I haven’t noticed a great deal of difference in my sight, the Dr showed me the screening and there has been a big improvement. Once again it cost heaps but definately worth it if it can save my sight. All you young ones out there, take note. These are the types of things that you need money for as you age. No one ever told me but I’m trying to warn you all. Forgot to mention that I now have a CPAP machine. That also cost almost $1000.
Now the garden…… It’s mud. Need I say more?
Today we are at home. So nice not to have to go anywhere for a change. Washing is on but not much chance it will dry. D is trying to squeeze in some mowing between showers. ZeeZee is waiting fot noon so she and I can watch the midday movie if there is one worth watching.

It all takes the process of thought.. A good machine works at a rate slightly slower than your pace of thought.
This morning I travelled to Ballingall and collected 8,000 citrus buds, a variety known as “pineapple”. Now people may not realise that when the person doing the grafting turns up with the buds, this means he has driven way over there, walked up and down numerous rows of trees selecting the best budwood for grafting which usually means the middle part of any branch cut. Then he has to sit down and cut every leaf off without damaging the buds.. wrap them up cool ad moist and drive all the way back. So it is from half to a full day’s work to just be ready to start doing the graft and corruption for one day. The next day.. budwood needs to be collected again before the grafting can start.
The Queenslanders look real scared
If you look at the front page of the ABC News online, they’ve got their cameras, and one person is even, inside the yellow tape…

Evening. Been so busy.
I’m a prize idiot. I had a sunspot on the side of my nose and hadn’t been to the drs about it. Well another friend says oh you need this herb sap splurge or whatever it’s called, some variety of euphorbia, it’ll get rid of it for sure. It was in the herb book too.
Yeah and nearly took my nose off with it. I have 3 nostrils! It burned almost through my skin. And because I’d been working in the dry dusty heat and me sweating, it got infected. Argh. The pain, oh the pain :( I’m brown faced wth betadine.
I shoulda known, me and sap, from any plant, don’t get along. O well, I’ll live.

Am I ever. Applied it once on my arm and it had an instant and terrible affect, washed it off with copious amounts of water but blisters appeared and it stung like crazy. It took weeks to heal.
I’ll be at the drs tomorrow if my nose isn’t feeling better.

Aloe vera was what you should have put on to neutralise the effect of the spurge and seal the wound from infection.
I won ‘t have anyone knocking Aloe Vera.

That’s why I had it growing. Until I tried it.
I washed the area with pawpaw soap and that stopped it stinging and took the redness away and I left it to dry and heal. But then getting sweat and dirt on it didn’t help and it got infected. Betadines doing the job and it feels better this morn.
Only pawpaw soap and cream for me from now on.
Re that soap.. ran out of shampoo and grabbed the soap, whoa..my coarse hair has never been shinier. I have found my nirvana.

Good morning. Warming up here already. Now, what were the things I put on my list last night?
Ride bike as soon as it is light. – Yep, did that.
Water (again) – Yep, did that.
Put in some more lettuce seeds for next round of lettuce. – Not done yet.
Tie up the tomatoes. Again. – Yep, did that.
Pot up some more cape gooseberry seedlings….they are getting a bit big and crowded in the nursery bed. – Too hot already.
Transplant some strawberry runners for next year’s crop. This year they failed dismally – Too hot, might try this evening and water well.
Pot up a couple of cuttings of lemon verbena and winter jasmine as that pot is getting crowded too. – Too hot already.
And just for entertainment (?!) I tried treating barefoot in dog poo…….Yuck!! Between the toes!!!

Otherwise she’d fall off. and this is why those who believe that God will save them.. create over protectionism. It is as if they are aware that God isn’t watching.. but they refuse to allow their kids to do stuff like eat dirt and climb trees and meet strange men.

They did.. but if you turn off page styles.. you get black on white.
I don’t mind it. I like hot pink. Perhaps I’ve just got used to it as I’ve been using it for almost a year rather than the New Forum. I don’t like V bulletin much.

Same here..
it is actually still a cool day 27.5°C and I’ve wasted that part sitting here.. Maybe I should uncoil the coit and get on with it.
We are nudging 34 outside. I’ve done my outside stuff for now. I think I might actually go and lie down and read. I’m a bit tired from this method of sleeping short bits instead of all night because of the hot nights.

Watching my little grandaughter climb a play frame thing, she knew exactly the part to grab onto that would take her weight so she could stand.
Otherwise she’d fall off. and this is why those who believe that God will save them.. create over protectionism. It is as if they are aware that God isn’t watching.. but they refuse to allow their kids to do stuff like eat dirt and climb trees and meet strange men.
a generalisation, and it is not just believers that over protect.

if the clunker is still operational, it sounds like a good box for Linux, there are systems suitable for older hardware, it’d bring it back to life.
Most people probably don’t remember seeing me here before 2003 as that is when I got this G4. However I was here before that at the GA forum as ironbarked. I was using a powermac 5500 at the time.

my plan is to double back up all the photos on board the clunker. They are already on one external drive and I plan a second copy (almost completed) and then I will wipe the internals clean and see if one of my staff over here want to set it up in their house (complete with PC desk)… I’ll set it up so that they can surf online, receive and send emails and use the drive to store pics from their phone camera. I’ll add a few externals bits like a memory card reader and a few USB drives for them. It will get someone started and make a good machine for a Uni student. I’ve got a working printer that I’ll throw in too.

As long as the clunker is running an OS that is compatible with Mac.. no problems.. though later Macs shouldn’t be a worry anyway.

that is the one prob with my macbook pro… just one size too big for my lowepro slingshot pack. I have a dryzone camera bag but that is just too big for onboard baggage. Great for a canoe journey though.

One time at Lucky’s place, 4 gardeners got together. That’s the most I have seen in one place. Seen many gathering of threes.
I can actually remember having to make the PC change the .jpg to .JPG on images that I’d sent to my daughter’s computer.. She told me that she couldn’t view them so when I visited I sat down at the computer and lo and behold.. This small change fixed it.

Got an observation to put in the Poultry Prattle thread in a minute…
I’d just like to report….I’m hot. In the weather sense. (Too old for the other nonsense now). We have 36 degrees, 20% humidity (which explains the wilting leaves all over the place and the manic way the mature gum trees are dropping leaves and bark) and the wind from the North is waking up. Gonna be a fun sort of afternoon.
Been down to Cafe Bagdad for an iced coffee and a piece of chocolate brownie. Very nutritious lunch. But I’ll be eating my veggies at tea time.
Oh, and Dinetta…..those tomato plants have not yet provided pickable fruit. My tomatoes are always very late, and those ones in the sheltered bed are the latest of the lot. I’m hoping in another month. But I can cope with that. It would be nice to have the tomatoes in Summer, but in Autumn when I can make up pasta and tomatoes and stuff is fine too. We just eat what is happening at the time.
I do have trouble getting the basil to tie in with the tomato timing though!!
I’m just a molten blob. Giggling GS has tied my growing out hair into a top knot, so I’m a stupid looking molten blob.
22% rel hum, and hell C.

I live in hope for your tomatoes then, Buffy…the best of the vegetables, IMHO…
That stinks, I can’t read the TechTalk (ABC) forum…it’s gone the way of SSSF…how do you ask for it back?
I will need to take Shadow for an earlier walk, the local Sergeant has been trawling the road I use to for RBT and licence checks…my right rear blinker doesn’t work…every now and then I get party lights to look at…just blue and red ones but still…
Had a lie down and read….with the puppy on the bed. This is not usually allowed in this house. But the cuteness got me.
:)
Which reminds me I need to put Shadow’s blanket through with the top step mat…
I haven’t been stung by the cutness factor. Much. Max is eating left over roast meat while I feed the chickens a jam sandwich through the bars of the crates.

Definitely enjoyed it :) And again when I moved it just now. I must be the only person who waters their front garden because this time there were frogs everywhere! I was trying not to tread on any. Gees.
Low pressure sprinklers are good for that….leave it on the hose, tap off and shift the hose and they are so sensitive they shoot water at you. Not a lot, but nice on a hot day. Unless the hose has been sitting in the sun, and then the water is scalding hot!
I’ve moved my potting table (well, one of them) so the tractor can park up the back. This meant taking all pots off it, moving table, putting all pots back. But it gave me a chance to toss a couple that were deaded.
Going out for lunch today. A local group, to the local new cafe. Cafe Bagdad. We’ve been without a cafe for 18 months and we really missed it.
The highlight of my day..loitering in the 7 degree coolroom of the local nqr shop.
Bliss :D

I think it has been shut down along with the others? Complain to the ABC I suppose.
It doesn’t exist any more Dinetta. The forums were shut down during the week. I think it unlikely you will get any response. They were not ABC forums anymore anyway, but private hostings.
Wakey, wakey Gardeners! Gotta get out there before the relentless sun! Warming up. I think we did drop to about 20 overnight.
Morning. I was awake super early before dawn and been working my backside off before the heat chases me inside.
I’ve cleared and raked and levelled the lawn area. The kikyku is all dead. Yay. I reckon the dry and heat played a hand, but the foot thick euc’ mulch definitely killed it off.
Not a good time to establish a new lawn, but if I hurry and treat it with some tlc I’m sure I will. Finding some soft leafed buffalo turf rolls is proving to be hard. But I should be able to get some by the time this heatwave is over in a few days, then I’ll cut plugs and plant them.
It’s too quiet out in the hens yards. I miss them :(
Lovely little splash silkie boy is going free to a new home today. The lady loves him already and he will have lots of girls to himself. I can have some free fertile eggs down the track :)
Visitors by noon. I better get some housework done.
Good morning all. So nice and cool here, just loving it. 23C (almost winter weather!!) and a balmy southeasterly…normally I would not like the southeasterly as it means fair weather, no rain, but we’re still drying out so it’s all good…
Can’t believe I’m sleeping with a doona (and Nefertiti) of a night at this time of the year but I’m not knocking it…
Have to let out and feed the chookens and move the hen and chickens to their tractor.
Glad your new little boy is going to a nice home where he’ll get steady “work”, Happy Potter. Yes you would miss the noises. I love picking up one of the hens that says “pick me, pick me” (one of the Lohman Browns from Christmas) and she gives this little trilling noise…Still working on confining the flock to the back yard.
Shadow rolled in sloppy horse poop last night, I didn’t know until I was down checking the chooks’ water preparatory to locking them in for the night. So my car might stink. Drat. However the towels on the back seat need washing so they’ll go through with the towels I used after bathing him. Shadow says he’ll get a bath every day when he goes to Heaven…smart alec…
The paramedic is next door, at Mrs B’s place… worry worry one of her nieces is there too so that’s alright…kinda…you should see the portable stuff he took in… worry

He’s just left…she’s still at home…Mah Jong this afternoon I hope…might go and ask how she is, would that be rude?

I think it would be neighbourly. You could just talk to the niece if she is poorly.

dogs are such bogans – the poodles go around eating the stuff – they go thru the mulch picking out the choice bits.
pepe is a cute old girl tho’ – she sees a rabbit running away so she does a lethargic romp in the general direction the rabbit went then stops and sniffs around.
there was a time she would have tore after it with blood curdling yelps…
the old chook run has been divided into 6 beds and three of them planted -
– 1. peas – snow and earlicrop - 2. mine own broad beans (dried as per BG’s guidance) – 3. silver beet (fordhook), raddichio and lettuceand then 2 transplants – – the tumeric and broccoli from the bed the chooks are now destroying.
all crops are covered with shadecloth or old bamboo blinds because the sparrows and pigeons are cruising the joint with an eye to mischief.
I’ve taken a bit of a risk this morning. Planted out into very protected spots some very small beetroot seedlings. I have more to replace them if they fry. Also put in the first broad bean seeds and some garlic cloves. I’m trying an experiment with protecting my capsicum/chilli plants over winter. Maybe I can get them through if they are crowded around with other plants to stop the frost. I think I’ve only once ever actually got fruit on my capsicum type plants and that was years ago. This year’s ones are just thinking about flowering now, so my chances are again slim. If I can overwinter them, maybe they will have enough time to actually do something next year. I should do what my friend down the road does, first year in pots, into the hothouse, then plant out the second year. Oh, I remember….not hothouse here! But I do have two window panes from the renovations of the pantry and bathroom, so I could set something up soon.
I see we have now gone 9 days over 30 degrees and a couple more, at least, to go. Maybe some showers tomorrow. Perhaps.
http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/dwo/201303/html/IDCJDW3053.201303.shtml
Last rain we had was on the 1st of February, and it was about 10mm…….(Ignore the Mortlake rain, we didn’t get that 2.8 and 4.4 that they did)
Humidity now is down to 20% and the temp has topped 35 degrees. And it isn’t even midday yet. I think a lie down and read of Scientific American and some optometry journals this afternoon might be in order.

So true…

The sparrows don’t miss much…I think that’s why Dad eventually welded himself some custom frames and covered them with chicken wire (the small holed stuff)…

Overwintering sounds good…can’t wrap my mind around panes of glass for hothouses in Australia…I know you need them down there but it takes some thinking about…
I will have to be rather careful not to burn things, we don’t really need what the Brits call cold frames. I reckon if I angle them sufficiently and keep the ends open so the air can exchange, I might be able to get things going a bit earlier than I do now. I’ve usually just put seed in the ground and let nature take its course.
I suppose I should think about a sandwich for lunch. Beetroot or baked beans. Mmm. Might have beetroot…it’s a bit risky when I’m at work, but I’m home today, so that might be the go.
OK, went hunting for beetroot in the pantry…..which is bags on the floor in the front room at the moment. The beetroot eluded me, but I caught some tinned asparagus. Makes a good sandwich too.

Oh it would…I’d have it on a door stop with cheese…
Mrs B will be exhausted soon…I went over to enquire and she had stubbed her toe, and very gently fell to the floor (was hanging on to her walking frame)…she has that thingy that hangs around her neck, yuge red button in the middle of it…so she pressed that and when the paramedic came, he did all the checks just in case…but she’s fine…she was doing the cross word when I called…has had callers all morning and another one has just pulled up…Mah Jong this arvo…

Mum had one, it was set up by the aged persons facility in Emerald but I think it “rang” on the Sunshine Coast?? It’s basically peace of mind for the carers / relatives because the only time Mum needed hers, she was unconscious (didn’t realize she was passing out). Once she moved into the Lodge, she didn’t need it of course…somebody’s always checking on those folk (just walking by with a quick glance mostly) nearly every 10 – 15 minutes…
adelaide cup day here in adelaide – the mumbojumbo festival in melbourne…
is anyone else having the day off?

i’ve got a calendar called ‘goats in trees’ – really funny – they don’t climb of course – they just walk up these low trucks and along the horizontal branches – eating all the time.
so now i’ve come up with an idea for a calendar – “dogs in doorways”
our bluddy poodles are just collapsing in this heat but – they are doing it right where we walk – so in doorways – yes – but also in archways, passageways, and tiny gaps between chairs.

noone goes to the adelaide cup – we just have a holiday.
peanuts and corn in the canberra hills?
have you just teleported from PNG?
Ok it’s time to stop. I tried to turn the lawn area into a swimming pool with sprinkers on full, and failed. It’s draining fantastically. The chooks are cooled. I’m going to hit the couch with a gardening mag and have a rest. No tea to cook, no one home. I will have a couple fresh figs from the fridge later. Peace reigns :D

The Australian High Commission in Papua New Guinea has a holiday today called “Canberra Day” :D
So if he is in Canberra, yes, they do have Anzac Day as a public holiday.
I grow peanuts and corn here. Though corn and climbing beans work OK, corn will shade peanuts too much.

The sod. Can you go to a different gym? Good on you for wanting to work out and keep the moving bits movable.
I know my ticker is fine. I had had to undergo heart testing for the bigger surgical procedures and all was good. I still do my stretching and see the physio once a fortnight for my back excercises and all is great there too. Back to putting palms flat on the floor with straight knees.

Only gym in town and we should be grateful it’s there at all…sponsored by the local mining company…
Not quite at the palms flat on the floor with straight knees yet but working on it…

I’ve started the evening watering regime. I’d better go out and move the sprinklers.
Temp is now dropping, gone under 30 now. But going for a 38 tomorrow, Total Fire Ban and the works. So I need the soil fairly damp to start with.

Another hot one. Not that I’m complaining, I have air cons, and solar to run them. I’ll go collect new horse manure in the next lot of cooler days coming up.

Early July I’m bussing it to the gold coast, then my sis donna will pick me up and we’ll drive the rest of the way to Sarina. Elderly rellies can’t wait to see me.

I had an appointment at one of the regional hospitals yesterday. What an experience. We have been to Brisbane hosp. regularly with little trouble finding where we had to go. Yesterday at another hosp.was a doozie. Finding our way from the car park to the Hosp.was an adventure in it’s self then trying to find the floor and block where we had the appointment was a nightmare. There are twists and turns in the corridors. Red, Green, Purple and Orange lifts to choose from and everything with an ‘ology’ in it’s title stuck on every door. The whole time you know you are getting later and later for your appointment. It didn’t matter in the long run (literaly) because we had to wait almost an hour before we saw the Doc anyway.

No, no coffin, just straight into a hole and dirt on top…can’t really recall if this was before or after the Roman times, might have been before? Wasn’t really paying attention…
At some stage, folk were buried in the foetal position…which makes sense…as if you were sleeping…

heard on the radio of a stunt that backfired. Some youth made like an unmarked police car with a flashing red and blue light and pulled over a car and asked to see the driver’s licence. Only the person they pulled over was an off-duty police officer! they are now being questioned and their light has been confiscated.

In Qld we take that seriously, believe it or not. Young lad pulled over an attractive lass about 20 years ago, said he was a plain clothes cop (he was 19!!!) and got her details…She made inquiries and he got a big fine and a warning and I’m pretty sure, a conviction (but not a prison sentence)…

I say go the whole hog and cremate all the dead. I know it’s probably against some religious beliefs but it’s a far more practical way of dealing with it.
…but…but…but then how would “Waking the Dead” solve some of it’s crimes???
Earth to earth. Dust to dust and all that. Waking the dead can solve anything even if it’s dust.

It didn’t matter in the long run (literally) because we had to wait almost an hour before we saw the Doc anyway.
Sounds like the Brisbane Mater these days…
thanks to my staff member who recently got hit by lightning, and the other who now has an aggressive cancer in his mouth and the other who has chronic back concerns plus the other that has a son who is blacking out every hour, I now know the insides of the Port Moresby General Hospital.
Please do not say anything about the health care system in Australia again.

Could be arranged. That would be lovely. I will find out.

I wasn’t saying anything negative about our hospital system. I have nothing but praise for the people who work in our hospitals. Heaven knows we’ve had enough dealings with them to be able to make a fair judgement. I was condeming the structure from where they dispence their knowledge. I don’t know where the blame lies for that but it’s woeful that sick and elderly have to trapse from pillar to post where you can’t even tell North, South, East or West.

I will agree that on my first few visits to Pom General I was easily confused as to what floor i was meant to be on and where I was. There is a courtyard that for some reason to go from the entry foyer to the x-ray department, you must cross diagonally across this open air courtyard, where it would appear that all 4 sides of the courtyard must link up internally. However, everyone leaves the building (re: enters the courtyard) and then re-enters the building 30ft away on the other side.
The benefit is, one gets the opportunity to whilst being ‘outside’ they can clear their heads of any congestion, snot and betelnut. And I wonder why the TB Clinic is always busy…

The TB clinic is busy because the people live in close quarters at home and don’t take the full course of medication.

Good o’ PuG! Give him a rub on the belly for me! I would rub my hound on the belly but her teets are swollen and so is her womb once again, so I have to rub her on the sides and flanks. Whilst trying to remove her scrub ticks…
My ‘puppy’ is also in trouble for jumping my new grass area barrier and scratching out some buffalo plugs. I replanted them and will show the canine where he can go to poop.. pointing, there Max..dirt part, NO THERE and shaking head, pointing to the grass side. He understands pointing and ‘no’ and what my head shake means.
Karchering solar panels today. More water play :)

i have moved the chooks to the other henhouse that has a higher second level perch. they all get up there to prove they are not inferior and this gives them trouble when it comes to getting down in the mornings.
so when i open up in the mornings – there they all are – still getting the courage to jump down.
i take the opportunity to get in a bit of ‘chook orchestra’ practice. each one lets out a sound as i touch it and the rooster does a solo when i give him a bit of a pat.
they do eventually get lifted safely down.
The refresh in here has gone whacko, the post either doesn’t load or it skips some.
I was out the front watering the pumpkin vines and ended up with an audience, 2 women and a bloke walking a dog and we had a lovely chat all about pumpkins. They counted them and there’s 29!
I cut one for them and they were very surprised and thankful.
I made some mushroom pasta for tea and can’t wait to eat, I’m starving. Early to bed for me.

there is a lower perch – but this is a potting shed – and they are sleeping on a wire bench about 900mm off the floor.

How did I miss this one? Maybe they just like you lifting them down lol!
You do have a ladder leading up to the roost? Mine is made from scrap wire and nice straight saplings…I need more rungs tho’ for when I clip their wings…
In the days when they were cooped elsewhere and a fox got two of my POLs one night…Pancho was always at the top of the old swim ladder which doubled as part of the roost…no fox for him lol!

the press are full of rumours and I’m sure they bring this one up on purpose just to keep the discussion alive.
I was getting withdrawals last night. My phone line has been playing up (lots of static) and I have reported it and yesterday afternoon until sometime during the wee hours it was out of action altogether with a “line in use” message on my phone. I assume they were testing it? Instead of a dial tone there was an alarm type noise. Anyway, it meant my internet connection was down too. Back on again this morning (obviously) but there is still static on the phone.
hearing static could mean that water got into the wiring, somewhere along the line, has it rained there recently?
trichome said:

60mm about 2 weeks ago, after almost nothing for months and months. It is in the hands of the T company now, so who knows when it will get fixed? I have done an isolation test for the phone itself and it tested OK so it is in the line somewhere. The static is really bad, you can hardly hear the other person on the phone and vice versa.
telstra do try to get things fixed asap, (has been my experience), especially if the customer has them as their phone company.

I’m with Southern Phone who have a 3 day repair contract with them, but I was told that depending on how isolated the area is it could take longer.

yep, the fault somewhere between your place and the exchange most probably. if they take too long i’m sure there would be a way to escalate the job

Interview went well. It was with the recruitment company but he said he will recommend me for the next stage. It is with a family owned Building company Ovens & King Builders that are getting a good reputation for their 7 & 8 star sustainability rated houses.
If I don’t get this then there is another job that is in the pipeline that he will put my name in for. He also said that he could forward my name to companies looking for casual or temporary admin staff. I think he was happy with me :)
And when I got home the Telstra man was here. Another two minutes and he was going to leave! He found the fault. There was some chewing of the wires where it goes under the house, but the main fault was between my house and the other side of the CFA station which runs underground. He connected up the secondary line and it is all working properly again :)

Vege swap day. At least it’s cool, there might even be a shower or two. I hope the community centres building works have finished so we can have the BBQ shade sail area back. Next month is the 2nd anniversary of meeting here and we’re going to put on a barbie to celebrate.
But only after the time that the swap is advertised is finished, for the regulars who attend every time.
If it’s a public event then food laws come into it. On a public BBQ. My heads hurting too much already.
I’ve pumpkins and eggplants to take, boxes of jars and some recipe books, and seedlings :)

If it’s a public event then food laws come into it. On a public BBQ. My heads hurting too much already.I’ve pumpkins and eggplants to take, boxes of jars and some recipe books, and seedlings :)
two years already? Wow!

Good morning Gardeners. Cool here this morning, with clouds coming and going. Even a very light spattering of moisture. Not enough to stop you being outside though. I did my bike ride and then I mulch mowed the backyard (a bit over 1/3 acre, I think). The gum trees are throwing leaves and bark like there is no tomorrow. Looks tidier if you homogenize it.
Alright, alright, Northerners might laugh….but we just had a shower of rain. It probably amounted to 0.2mm or something ridiculous, but I stayed outside in it and got wet anyway. I can hear water running into the rainwater tanks….
:)
Oh, and Mr buffy broadcast grass seed an hour ago….timing is magnificent.
Ooh, more showers!

got a shower here too :)
Got soaked through going to the deli for cheeses.
Got a wine tasting here this evening. Hubby asked what’s for tea and I told him dunno, I’ll be too tipsy to cook. Well that’s the plan :D
We’ve had showers and windy stuff since mid morning. Probably only amounts to about 4 or 5mm, but it might be the Autumn Break. Supposed to kick in around St Patrick’s Day. Which is tomorrow.

Not sure where the Birds in my Garden thread is, but I think somebody’s hand raised pink galah is hanging around. Plenty for it to eat as the grass has seeded in lieu of grass (if you know what I mean) and it is not shy of me but is wary of Shadow…

Hubby and I rearranged the house for the young parents.. things they didn’t pick up things that could be a hazard that we know will be very soon. Including a tall heavy vase. The little tot is climbing everything and anything and they need a baby gate to keep the lil monkey contained while they cook, carry things about, ans the door, phone, and so on.
I spent the morning at a property out in woop woop bagging horse manure. I only stopped because it started raining heavily. Having a cuppa now while my hair dries off and then I’ll go drag the bags out of the car.
I’ll put the manure in the chook pen for the first stage of processing. After they’ve de bugged it I’ll rake it out and add it to the compost pile. And some into the compost ball. After a couple months composting it’ll go into the mini orchard.
Compost that’s ready now is going on the saffron bed, today. The good bulbs will start popping up soon.

Well I can’t see for sure…it’s darkish…about 12” from top to tail end, the street lamp doesn’t cast much of a light…I think the meece are on the move…but it has an owl-type face, you know…with the raised eyebrows and all…must be an owl because I’ve seen a frogmouth up close and they don’t really have the traditional owl type face, do they?
I’ve seen a few in my drives lately (to walk the dog)…also some little bird, about the body of a pee-wit but plumper with a shorter tail, just sitting on the roads of an evening…grey on top and white underneath…not owls…

remember one time up at Eungella on an organised evening bushwalk with 30 others with torches, we were all looking up at some palm trees at a Pygmy Sugar Glider when one of the tourists said to our guide “excuse me, what’s this?” and at that moment, 30 people with 30 torches all turned to look at this roadside post only 1 metre in height and only 1 metre away from the person with the question, and there was a Tawny Frogmouth sitting as still as possible.
And then 27 people took photos with a huge array of flashes… poor startled bird.

Not a remarkable day today. A bit cooler with grey clods and showers. I cooked a roasted chicken loaf for dinner. For someone who doesn’t like chicken it wsn’t too bad. Every meal we cook here has green beans or snake beans with it. Gosh they are bearing well. Transplanted some cape goosberry seedlings into a proper garden bed today. They had come up from under where last years bush was. I didn’t even realise that any fruit had matured on it let alone viable seed.
Good morning Gardeners. Presently 10 degrees and still dark. I’ll be heading off a tad earlier to work today as I will be working solo in Casterton. My receptionist is poorly. So I need to get there a little earlier to make sure I have everything set up before people start rolling up.
Going for a 30 today, so I will be complaining about that later.

Well I’m up as you can see…overcast here, we are getting the scrag-end of ex-TC Tim, the cotton farmers won’t be impressed…some light drizzle last night, I went walking in it and it was pleasant…coolish now tho’…supposed to be 19C but it feels cooler, possibly because of the easterly that’s blowing through my window…
On a gardening note, I raked up all the fallen leaves from the frangipanni, that had fallen on the footpath. No sense in wasting them so they are now under the frangi, on my side of the fence…I am not going to mow just yet, there’s not really grass it’s mostly seed heads the the little corellas and pink galahs like the seed heads.

The people from the council couldn’t have been nicer. They agreed they had no business being here and people can be fickle contacting them with false complaints and that I don’t run a business. They said they will look forward to visiting the orchard and seeing me there with my children’s petting pen of different coloured silkies!
And they are sooo not worried about having a few extras here at times, because of moving them about or ones brought to me to rehome, table birds, ect. yay. I won’t go nuts again tho lol

That’s a thought. I volunteer for a few things and help out in various community groups.
And they gave me enough time to rehome excess that they knew I had; I was upfront and honest from the start. I don’t help out in order to gain brownie points with the council though, the thought would never have crossed my mind.
But the difference from the first person I spoke to, who was so utterly rude to me on the phone that I considered lodging an official complaint, to the two that came out to see me that could not have been nicer if they tried, was such a contrast it had to be seen to be believed. I was so fraught with angst and I needn’t have been.
But at the end of the day, I didn’t, and I don’t, have a chicken business.

Cool. Used in cooking and as a food colour.
I’m obviously wrong but it certainly looks like Caster oil plant.

Climbing here…The TV soapie, Days Of Our Lives…the one with the little egg-timer as part of it’s introduction…There’s action for about 2 weeks then they spend 6 months analysing (agonising about) it…

I only watch it for the scenery…all those “beautiful” houses…and sometimes the laughs…
I have either lost or mislaid my walking joggers…can’t think where they could be and have checked everywhere…they are absolutely filthy (mud and dirt) but very wearable…my other pair is just for around the house or a quick trip to the little IGA…I couldn’t walk in them for 3 k, my arthritis would not let me put foot down for days after…

I used to watch it religiously when my kids were in school. It was my time for a coffee and a sit down. Some of the actors are still in the show today. I’m talking 30 years ago.
Bought a new broom today. 8-tie millet and something…need to rescue the plastic wrap from the bin to find out…boy doesn’t a new broom give oomph to the sweeping?
Swept under the house in record time, and about to give that awful artificial grass on the back deck a good sweep as well…
Totally not garden related but definitely chat-worthy…it cost me $30.00…I’m still reeling…
Also today I bought a clock for the bedroom (mine). It’s got giraffe and hippopotomus and monkeys on the face, totally suitable for an adult bedroom, yep! I need something to tell me the time when I wake up and the animals looked cheerful…good work all round…

No worries, it’s the weekend after all…
Still unable to find my joggers, so I have asked Fashionista (she made the finals for fashions in the field last weekend too, nice surprise plus a bottle of wine) to buy me a pair of Volleys from BigW and send them out with her dad…can’t afford the $$$ to replace the joggers but I need something to keep my feet off the stones when walking…
I pruned (got rid of) a hibiscus shrub today. We have three of the same type and I thought we could do without at least one of them. D and I hissed at each other about it but I won. Now we have this big space in a garden that we can plant something new. Now that the Giesha girls are cut back and the hibiscus is gone and the Brisbane wattle has had a trim, we can actually see the road in front of our house. It’s a novelty.
With the sun shining all day we are getting some positive action from all the solar lights tonight..

Good work all round…nice to see the solar lights glowing?
Morning. Just a quick drop in. We’re off to a lovely café for brekky shortly for hubby’s birthday. It was last week but he was working odd shifts on call and couldn’t make a time.
Then right after brekky I’m off to Tallarook for the day. Will be checking out my friends earth house poultry set up.
I made a nice cake yesty arvo to take, but when I took it out of the tin it was an inch high. Yep, grabbed the plain flour tub instead of the SR flour. I said so many colourful and unrepeatable words the man came running to see what was wrong. I shouldn’t bake when stressed and I’d had a roller-coaster of a week. Actually roller-coaster doesn’t even touch the sides. I’ll grab a cake from ferguson plares on my way. It won’t be the same though.
The brown leghorn hen x white leghorn roo’s eggs hatched in my chookie friends incubator and they are adorable. They are mostly white but with black spots. I wonder where the black comes from. I thought they would be a flecked caramel colour. He is keeping them, but I can visit and choose a laying hen later on:) No eggs atm, and the shop bought aren’t a patch on the home grown.
I found out more about the councils visit, and why the stark contrast from the first very distressing contact call to their uber friendly visit. Even though the allegation was false anyway, I was given time to rehome the excess. I had back up, and it came from the very very top. Can’t say anymore ‘out loud’. I have some wonderful friends and acquaintances.
Ok we’re out the door.
Have a nice day, Happy Potter…one of our favourite cakes is made with plain flour, I forgot to tell 8 year old Fashionista to add baking powder to the flour…

I’m not good at waiting either and I always seem to be in one waiting room or another. I find pulling weeds a good time filler. That is if you are waiting out doors of course.
Hope the waiting is worth it in the end.
I’ve been picking beans. Snake and french. I cook a heap each night and whatever doesn’t get eaten I scoff cold the next day. Luv my beans.
I’ve been doing housework. I know. It’s sttrange to hear me say that isn’t it? The family will be here for Easter so I thought I had better put in some sort of effort. I have started early because it will take me all week to make any impression worthwhile. Hate doing it but I love to see it clean.
So why am I still sitting here?

I thought it was, am hoping the head doesn’t fall off the handle like the last one did…well it’s made of millet and that’s a grain that was grown somewhere …am using it to sweep chicken-sheet from under the house, sadly I can’t recycle this into the garden as I’m sure somebody spread engine oil over the concrete and wouldn’t like to put this into the soil…so into a bag and into the bin with it…
I use the rake to collect the shredded paper and chicken-sheet from under the roost, am debating whether or not to just sprinkle more lime over what’s there and collect next week? Maybe next week, by then I’ll have psyched myself into placing this collection into an old feed bag for storage, for the day when the hens are corralled into the 3/4 acre down the back and the front 1/4 acre is MINE!!!

Yes it was partly that contact, but others not affiliated with anything gardening or community doings, and it had more to do with GS than being a volunteer.
Thank you BG. I have some wonderful friends to live up to.
But lest I start feel too speshal, there’s others in the same boat also named that are copping the same treatment from a council that has been bumbling and stumbling from chaos to crisis for over a year. They were told they are bullies and that their actions are unconstitutional. They appear inept at anything other than embarrassing our community.

Thank you, had a blast :D
Climbed to the top of Mt Hope with several other women. Ok it’s a hill really. But really big, and dodging the meat ant nests was great exercise in itself! The view from the top was a sight to behold.
I restrained myself from wanting to bring home some day old chicks. My friend has 3 dogs, a border collie, a whippet and another bitser. They are the anti fox gang. Well I wasn’t there one minute and I had them climbing on my lap! Apparently they never do that, the whippet especially is a very timid dog and shies from strangers, but it didn’t mind me :) I have a pic on my phone, when I upload it.
Lovely day :)

My naughty naughty dog has been trying to dig his way in to the chook tractor…I now have 4 holes to back fill… when he gets in he just lies there with his head on his paws, having “bailed up: Goldie and the chickens in their box (sound asleep)…
Well I have been down whippersnippering. The council sent me a “clean up your unsightly herbage” letter via REGISTERED POST!!! They sent it on 20th February but because it needed to be signed for, I didn’t get it until last Wed.
The landlord neighbours are a pack of rats. Not content with stealing my chook yard gates (from the chook yard) some years ago, they have pulled down and patched the common fence, and if it’s them, they’ve cut away my front fence on to my “footpath”…they have also dumped their tree cuttings on to my block, thrown other trash over, and in general shown contempt for the fact that it’s a vacant block.
I rescued one of the gates today, and P is bringing up the angle grinder to part the other from the hinge that it’s welded to. It would appear that the tenants are the complainants I think and it looks like they are away.
So I have written to the council and explained that I’m cleaning up the yard myself as I suspect there are rubbish hazards involved. Give me Mrs B next door, who quietly asked the other day that I clip my hens’ wings again, as one got in to her yard last weekend and she’s worried that her dog will accidentally kill one. I said if the hen’s so stupid to get in the way of Flicka (cattle dog) she deserves to be blood and bone, but I think Mrs B would rather Flicka didn’t kill anything at all. It’s easier if they say what they would like done. It’s also easier if the council doesn’t get involved.
We should be right this weekend, I will have sufficient rungs in the ladder to the roost that the chooks can get up OK with one wing clipped. Then we’ll put a few structures up and hopefully the chooks will stay in the backyard and I get my front yard to myself.

I’ve been known to alter such brooms as soon as they come home from the shop by inserting a section of metal pipe so that the head will stay on until it wears out, like they used to.

childish more than cute – ok – leave it at one dreamland clock.
And it’s good morning to all…I am eating unleavened bread, having forgotten to add the yeast to the flour…it’s alright but the crust is certainly chewy…the loaf took a long time to cook…
About to feed the chookens, move the Goldie and her chicks, feed the dog, feed the cat…the rainbow lorikeets already fed, looking forward to the grevillea across the road bursting into flower, it stays in flower for months and the birds are a sight to see…
Currently cleaning out my personal archives, making a bit of room in the filing cabinet…the shredder is getting a workout and I am stuffing the results into old feed bags. If I put it on the gardens the chookens would just dig it up…
Morning. I’ve fixed the little fence around the lawn area, now Max can’t get in there. Nor can I LOL.
Pics of the gorgeous dog cuddling into me at my friends place yesterday. I look a bit wild haired after the windy climb up the hill, but the dog didn’t care.

Yes it’s very quiet out the back. I miss their gentle clucking sounds. The 3 little black silkie chicks that I’d only had a week after buying them at the auction, but gave away, are back. There’s at least some movement out there :) The 2 silver spangled are doing well in their oversized pen. I’ll pop them into the mini orchard for the day shortly. I have to carry them so we bypass the lawn area.
I found out the whippet is in fact an undersized greyhound rescue dog with both front legs broken when rescued. Poor thing. Living the life of riley now though.

BTW, I didn’t get that job I interviewed for. A late applicant already in the industry pipped me at the post. The agent is going to put my name forward for a position coming up after Easter in Mansfield. Closer and my experience is more relevant so fingers crossed.

Oh so do I, and I much prefer shredded newspapers for the nest areas…softer and it doesn’t move much if a hen thinks it needs “re-arranging”…

Better to be pipped at the post than not make the shortlist…closer sounds good…crossed me toes as well…
…annnnd there it is, I’ve hogged the LHS again…made some macaroons this morning, fiddly things they are…from a packet of ready mix by Donna Hay…I think I didn’t beat the egg mix for long enough and her dessertspoons must be elegantly-sized ones…I need more baking trays as the mix didn’t like waiting in the fridge for the first lot to cook…only obtained 8 macaroons (I kind of ate one) and I should have got 12…
Made them to see what the fuss was about, not sure I’ll bother again…

Hello Gardeners. Although it would have been a good gardening day, I spent it inside. Sometimes you have to prioritize. The shelves went into the pantry last week, so I had to get on with painting the window surrounds and resetting the stuff on the shelves. I know it all came out of there, but I’m not sure why it won’t all go back! It does actually, I’m just trying to fit my plastic containers in there as well, and aren’t they a fiddly thing to organize! Here is the window when I decided the horrible baby cack mustard paint simply had to go. Underneath I found a nice red wood, might be red pine or red cedar. This house was built in 1931. I’ve chosen to varnish the surrounds, but the rest of the window frame wasn’t going to come up well enough. So I undercoat/sealed it and I’m doing it in gloss white. The sash window doesn’t work now, so I’m just painting it shut. Don’t need to open a window in a pantry anyway.
And now:
I had a blackout blind made because you can’t really have light in a pantry unless you are working in there. I’m pretty happy with it.
Will it stay tidy?
;)

Looks good, Buffy…a very nice colour of wood…is the pantry on the shady side of the house?

Hello?
Good morning. Cool and pleasant at the moment. I think we are going high twenties today but I haven’t yet read the forecast. Off to work shortly.

Hello, I’m up now. Been sleeping a lot with this cold, but it seems to be working :)
Morning from me too. I’ve been up for hours but not on the pc. I was raking the empty chook pen and have a huge pile for the compost. I will replace with mulch I have sitting out the front. I’m also about to pull out the lovely old sage bush as it’s been invaded by couch grass coming under the fence from next doors property. I’m losing the battle trying to stop it. I will strike some cuttings from it.
Nearby is two mountain pawpaw’s that will also need to be moved. They are starting to lose their leaves so I’ll wait until they are bare. If I treat one spot, it will just come back further along. Rotten couch grass is my enemy no 1. By treatment I mean digging out the entire area and putting in a deeper and tougher root barrier.
Potting up a fig into a large pot. Boy do those things grow so fast.
My new, and so far most successful, method of getting cuttings to strike is to sit the cutting between the border rocks of side of the pond, with the wood part sitting in the water. I did this once to keep the cutting from drying out so I could grab it later, but I noticed every time I walked past it, the top stayed green and new leaves appeared, then noticed it had tiny roots on it, so I put it back!
That was with a small piece broken off the lillypilly when Max crashed through the pots chasing a bird. Righto! I’ll try that with other cuttings.

Yes. Some cuttings will strike roots in water that isn’t stagnant. Many need good sunlight to keep alive.
Couch grass isn’t fond of glyphosate. Couch grass also hates tomatoes. So planting tomatoes on top, after you paint the couch with glyphosate is a good idea but wait a few weeks as tomatoes hate glyphosate anywhere near.

Yes, cool area pawpaw’s. They’re growing very well, 1.5 mt high now after getting them in seedling pots from diggers.

Hey Justin, those mountain pawpaw’s won’t get to the height they do in the sub-tropics. Lucky if they would get to 4 mt in the south.
I spent the arvo tidying my front garden, pulling out dead pumpkin vines and weeds galore. Then I spotted a tiny cordyline seedling.. sprung into action with spades and hand tools, dug down and it turned out to be just under the surface, a tiny piece left behind.
I just got mobbed by about fifty Major Mitchell’s Cockatoos. They land in my walnut trees and drop them like bombs on the roof, cars or on people passing beneath. It is so heart warming to see so many in one flock. Usually they rarely get flocks larger than twenty.

four metres – well – that pretty good !!! nothing wrong with 4 metres.
I have grown 4 chillie trees – about 400mm high – you may laugh but – it’s their first year. not sure of their eventual height.

Run the pan in a circular motion, get the pancake moving, tip the outer end down while still rotating and give it a sudden backward flick of the wrist. Hold the pan under the flipping pancake.

The pancake needs to be able to slide around in the pan. No good if sticky.

They help me by dropping more nuts than they eat. They provide a most beautiful addition to the atmosphere of the yard. They are one of the more melodious cockatoos that don’t screech. It is an honour to have such rare species common in my backyard.
I’ve tried to photograph them many times over the years.

Good morning Gardeners. Already 23 degrees here. It only went down to about 20 and that was at midnight. Been getting warmer since then. And now the wind is getting up and gusty. Yuck. Total Fire Ban. Again. (And pretty late in the year too, for a TFB)

going to be hot here too, with a chance of storms tonight. Rain tomorrow with cooler temps.
Hot here now, strong north winds. There’s some grass fire warnings for nearby.
I’m not doing much outside today and I didn’t go to quilting. I’ve had sore foot that’s been achy for a few weeks, just the top of my foot instep/front of ankle. Pawpaw cream is magic and takes the pain away, but any pressure on it, like my stockings, kills, so just resting with feet up today.
something funny has been going on with my phone. Calls I haven’t made are listed on my account, and there is no one else that could have made them either. The company says that they HAVE been made and from my phone so there is not much they can do about it. I am to monitor the phone use this month and see what happens next bill. Not a lot of money involved, but I don’t have money to waste either!

Hello Gardeners. I’m glad I am not the fire tower person for Mt Rouse today. It’s very windy up there. Mr buffy rang me to tell me the fireperson is reporting gusts of 127km/hr. Not down in town at Penshurst though, probably only gusting around 60km/hr there. But it is 30 degrees. It’s not a Nice Day.
Fire at Derrinallum. And my parents are driving from Melbourne today. Derrinallum is on the way. They might have to do detours.
Well like it or not I have to move.. Max at the vets in 30 mins. He was throwing up overnight and this morning he seemed to be walking strangely, had a funny gait, his legs seem to splay out the sides. Off his food completely. We’ve been watching him closely and just now hubby led him outside to wee and the poor dog was staggering, fell over and couldn’t lift his rear end up.
Why do pets always get crook when we have no money and had no, or very little, work for the last month?

Lotta if’s…
He might have an inner ear infection, the vet gave him a pain jab and an antibiotic jab. If it s that it would be causing him motion sickness, hence the vomiting, staggering and head tilt. He was falling all over the place. He tried to go sniffing and peeing in the garden at the vets and ended up flopping over like a fish out of water. He is drinking water ok but not eating, but that’s fine. If the vomiting comes back after he resumes eating, then it’s urgent.
The vets thinking that he may have a long term inner ear infection that’s been hidden by the outer ear canal infections.
The pain he has in his rear end is spinal and could be arthritis, but needs a CT scan to be sure. We have to wait to see if the antibiotic tabs work for his ear first and if not, a whole body CT scan will be needed sooner.
He is snoozing on his big pillow bed under my desk. If I get up, he tries to get up to follow me but ends up flat on the floor, so I’m going to go and lie on my bed to keep my swollen legs up, and he can have the end of the bed.

If I get up, he tries to get up to follow me but ends up flat on the floor, so I’m going to go and lie on my bed to keep my swollen legs up, and he can have the end of the bed.
poor little thing :(
will make sure you rest up though!
Lots of resting required.

Poor Maxie, he wants to be well but it’s just not working out…well I don’t know, I too have noticed that pets are an expense when least $$$ is available…drat…
It isn’t only pets.. washing machines, cars, clothes dryers, plumbing or electrical probs.. you name it.. it always comes up when cash is short.
and just when you think you are getting on top of things too.
My parents arrived around 2.00pm. They had no idea there were any fires. Either they are not observant, or the fires were far enough from the highway that they were not evident. Anyway, they’ve gone home to settle in to the holiday flat and Mr buffy will bring them back up here to Hamilton shortly to watch us at archery and then we’ll go out for tea.

Glad that there were no problems for them. Hope you have a nice time while they are there.
My lovely vet just rang back to see how Max is doing as she’s about to go off shift. Hasn’t eaten all day and when he tried to cock his leg outside he fell over and panicked and ended up flat on his belly trying to pee. Poor thing.
But she said not to panic as it may be a day or two for the antibiotics to work and get his balance back. She said it’s not a grass seed as he isn’t in pain, a grass seed that’s penetrated the ear drum causes terrible pain and also causes irritation in the ear canal and he doesn’t have any sign of either. I’m cooking some chorizo snags for tea and to see if I can tempt him to eat. His absolute favourite.
Well he ate some, head tilted to the side and all. Now to see if he throws it up.

Must say I have enjoyed your pics of the Major Mitchell parrots. We used to have one as a pet when I was a kid. He was pretty feisty though.

Thanks, no chucking up so far and I’ve hand fed him some treats, had to hold the water bowl under his nose but he drank well. But he is worse staggering wise. I’ll be waiting at the vets to open at 8am.
I’m sorry I’ve been missing for a couple of days. Been spring cleaning in Autumn. Used our carpet shampooer for the first time and it did a pretty good job. House looks and smells lovely now. I will be able to invite Easter visitors into the house without apologising for anything. Gee I’m a good girl.
Tomorrow I will start doing some baking of Easter goodies. Might even try doing some hot cross buns. Never tried making them before.
I haven’t read the full LHC. May I be excused?

17mm so far. Actually the highest reading on the 250 km Yarrawonga loop at the moment.
Hopefully with more to come..

Yes, there looks to be still more to come. So I’ll be able to do some things around here tomorrow.

Hmm 17 mm is the highest reading on the 512 composite Yarrawonga loop page. Only Falls Creek comes as close with 16 mm.

Yes it is always good to hear of rain here. Unless you are in the middle of harvest.
Good morning Gardeners. A lovely 10 degrees here…….but less than 1mm ‘rain’. Still, it feels fresher…….
I’m off for a haircut this morning and then to work. It cuts out a couple of consultations for me, but my long term hairdresser doesn’t work here on Mondays when I also have the day off. So every few weeks I will have to sacrifice a couple of consultations to remain tidy.
I reckon I’ve got time to do a little tomato tying up before I go.
Back from a visit to the vet again, a consultant vet was there this morn and took a look at Max..gave him another jab for nausea and wrote out everything to give him and what time antibiotics and pain tablets for his back, and minimum water amounts he is to drink. Syringing it into him if necessary. He said when an animal is falling all over the shop it is horrible to see and you think they’re going to die at any time, but it looks worse than it is. Next apt on tues. Unless he starts throwing up again. If no better by then he will need a ct scan. If this happens they will flush his ear out and use a fine needle to extract some of the middle ear fluid to test it for infection.
I fed him some milk stick treats and his mouth was open but he couldn’t steady his head enough to take it, so I have to hold his head still and put the food into his mouth.
My ‘housework blinkers’ are on at the moment.
A good amount of rain here overnight too, 19 mm in the gauge. Good o.
Eggplants are going nuts with fruit. I won’t need to grow them for next year, I have so many bags of them dried. That’s room for something else then.

What are they harvesting down your way, RoughBarked? The cotton should nearly all be off except for the dryland stuff up here…
Went into Benalla this morning. The first time since the storm last week. I had heard stories, seen photos, etc. but was still shocked at the damage. The roads themselves have been cleared but they are still removing the damaged trees and fallen timber and it is a real mess. I also found out just how close it was to me. Just a couple of kilometres away.

Poor Max. Poor Mummy. It’s so hard to see your pet in difficulty. I can remember giving one of our dogs treatment for heart worm. It was a 6 week course of 3 different tablets at 2 week intervals. We watched our dog being affected by all sorts of different turns and staggerings. Her head not being able to focus on anything or even seeing things that weren’t there and trying to bite them. It was all caused by the drugs and the only treatment available for heart worm at that time. She got better eventually but it marked me forever.

Benalla sounds a bit like our area after the recent floods. Thank heavens you weren’t in the line of fire this time.

What sort of moon is shining over your place? Ours is big and bright and beautiful. It’s causing the trees and buildings to cast shadows on the ground. I must have noticed it because it’s been so long since we’ve had cloudless skies.
Morning everyone. It’s very cool and overcast and I even contemplated putting the heating on. Until I had a hot flush.
Still syringing water into Max. He looks terrible. He is refusing all food and both his antibiotic and pain tablet bottles say to give with a full meal, so I’ve given him milk with nutripet in it. I’m doing what the vet said and being patient and waiting, but inside I’m a wreck. This vestibular disease is distressing to deal with.
I called youngest daughter and her bf to come over for the day and give me a hand with some housework. They’ll be here shortly.
Hello Gardeners. I seem to have had quite a bit to do today. I’ve homogenized the backyard again. I bet I need to do it again before too long. The chooks have been moved out onto the couch grass, after I mowed it to give them some loose stuff. And the park over the road has started to supply us with an excess of oak leaves…..I’ve mulched some of them too. I seem to recall reading that blueberries liked oak leaves, so I guess I need to run the mower through with the catcher and put the result on the bed where I am about to plant a couple of blueberry plants.
I’ve just made a lime tart thing which has a crushed gingernut biscuit crust and the filling is mascarpone, lime rind and juice and icing sugar. Rather rich. But I suspect it will be rather nice too.

((((HUGS))))
Morning.
I’m still syringing water into Max and he is still refusing to eat or drink, still disorientated and gets panicky if he has to walk around or down anything, curve in the path, through a doorway, back step, ect. My veterinary mate came over and had a look at him. He didn’t have a cannula needle nor a bag of saline at home so he made up some saline and with a needle put 600 mls under Max’s skin. It picked him up a bit. He will do the same later today and again tomorrow. It saved me a fortune from having to take him to an emergency vey after hours and on a public holiday.
This is going to take some time and if he’s still not drinking by himself by Tuesdays vet appt, they will put him in to drain his ear and get some fluids into him.
Apart from going outside to walk him and see to the chooks, I haven’t been out much at all.
Except..I shifted the broody with her 2 chicks from the communal nest box into a separate pen and a big ruckus happened..one of her chicks was way up under her wing and I lifted her it tumbled out and down the ramp and onto the floor of the coop. Right next to a very big but very dead, rat! Well! Mumchook took off and flew at the rat and full on attacked it with all the ferocity of an attack dog. Dirt flew as she stomped on it, flew at it and pecked it with fury and making an awful racket.. I was trying to grab the chick and it took off through the fence and across the yard. Me in pursuit with a long handled fishing net, I finally caught it. I had the 2 chicks in my dressing gown pocket and had to drag mumchook away from the rat and finally got them into the quiet pen. Phew. The man came out to dispose of the rat.
The chicks have a home to go to when they’re 6- 8 weeks old :)
sounds like if that rat wasn’t already dead, it soon would have been!
Got youngest daughter N over for the weekend so I’ll be a bit quiet. We spent yesterday snuggled together on the couch watching DVDs :)

Good morning Gardeners. I think I’ll eat some toast and head out to dig. Nice and cool and there has actually been some light precipitation going on overnight.
:)
I just collated some rainfall for our area, and I think we have had about 140mm in the last 6 months. Averaging Bundoora and Scoresby for Melbourne (my parents live in Box Hill), they’ve had around 250mm. So now I can tell my Mum that we are worse off than them!!
Morning green ones. Good to see some received much needed rain :)
Max is turning the corner, finally, improving in small stages. He is drinking a little bit but I top his fluids up with a syringe barrel. He nearly had to go to the lort smith hospital yesty with dehydration, but my friend came to the rescue once again and put some saline into him. A couple hours later the pink skin on the dogs gums was returning to pink in one second after pressing, previously it was over two seconds, and he is weeing again. He is eating tiny amounts and feeling better in general, it’s great to see his tail wagging again. His head is still on a major tilt though and he might still have to go in to have his ear drained.
The house is a wreck however, and we’re running out of clean clothes. Must get some housework done now. I did find a favourite light cardigan under everything that I’d been looking for, for a while, yay, lol.

glads to hear he is on the mend now :)
visitors coming at five – so house is clean and dinner is prepared.
might be time for a shower.
Well, didn’t find any treasures and someone at some point has dug up many of the bluestone flagstones and left only the concrete bottom to the drain for quite a length. Not to worry, it just exercised my ingenuity to decide how to deal with it and I have a Plan. Perhaps I should take a photo now, while it is in a total mess……
And here it is now, with a great trench being dug and a lovely pile of broken glass retrieved from the diggings at the bottom of the photo…..
:)
