As I inhale the soft but distinct perfume of frangipanis of a night, I don’t yearn for any of the scenes in those photos at all.. but they are pretty…
Meanwhile, at The Top End
Autum colourings like that don’t happen here either. But I do have 2 different types of Liquid Amber and 1 Ginko biloba and they give a quick show before winter.

it would be horrible to have the build up (I have heard that can almost drive you crazy!) without the rain.
here it is very pleasant atm (25.6). Sunny again after our bit of rain, but much cooler. I can leave the drapes open and have some light, and some doors and windows open and have some fresh air! It will build up to the low 30s again during the week but hopefully the back of summer has been broken.

except its called ‘mad’ when you do it down here – and – the weather is conspiring to send us all into a state of ‘sublime melancholy’ – all flashy clods and lightning but little rain – grr!!
Just saying…the autumnal equinox this year is March 20…according to Mother Nature this is the cut-off from summer, heading in to the cooler months…
Nice drop of grass growing rain has settled in….
we’re supposed to have received 44 points last night but I think we got more in town here…
The Monsoonal Trough on the eastern side, continues to march south
summer has decided to continue with continual temps above 30C which is unusual for March. This past summer has been dubbed “The Angry Summer” and a “climate on steroids”.
At least it is cooling down at nights a bit more so the hot period of the day is shorter and easier to cope with.

. The highest mean maximum temperature on record for summer in Adelaide (Kent Town) is 31.2°C in 2000..
I was suspicious and looked it up on BOM Adelaide.
That Adelaide airport temperature is (deliberately?) misleading …… this year in Adelaide was 1.2C cooler than 2000.
the stats are being misused imho

they maybe quoting absolute temperatures, not mean, and they are talking Australia overall, not just a particular area. But you may be right and we are being duped.

the airport stat is correct – but is not typical of the adelaide region this year.
i think we are in a global warming pattern but – it’s not linear and often takes three steps backwards – like in the northern hemisphere freeze this year
i do remember it was a cold spring because i deliberately planted my spring garden under extensive shade trees. i thought i wouldn’t need to erect shade structure over my crops – but darn – the temps stayed down and ruined many of the crops.

I am so over this long hot summer. Chooks are still being a pain and I am hot and sweaty. It is dark now and still over 30 deg outside and humid. Had to chase the cockerel out of a tree where he decided to roost a couple of times, and still have hens in sin bins. Decided to swap a couple over so the best behaved one (and the only one laying atm) gets to go back in the main coop. At least the grass in green again. Off to have a shower.
Still hot and dry here. It’s reached 34 and still rising. The wind is from the North and gusting around the 30s. I’m staying inside where I have the temperature at around 23 degrees.

Lovely and cool here, I believe we will have a Max of 29C today, there’s a cool breeze from the south east…we need a drying breeze just at the mo, and I saw lovely stands of sorghum (dryland cropping) on the way on Wednesday…reckon they must have planted just before / after Christmas because it’s not really been dry enough since Jan 25 (ex-TC Oswald days) for tractors to get out on the blacksoil…

It is a climatic upbringing thing. In spring maybe(around here), people complain that 30ºC is a hot day.. but by autumn.. 36ºC is a cool day.

37C has always been the “hotter” temp for me, in that after 37C it can be defined as “hot”…. however humidity can throw a spaniard in the works…

we discovered that – if you stand immersed up to your neck for 30 minutes you can actually feel cold – no activity allowed.

So in theory, if you hop into a pool that’s 32C e.g. a “heated” pool…for little darlings Learn to Swim…and you stand still for 20 mins, you will cool off?

I used to teach those little darlings in a heated pool and yes, you felt cold before the day’s lessons were over. Don’t know if it was at the 30 min point or later though.

Well I’m so over this long wet season. The sugar has gone lumpy. The salt has turned to moisture. The ants have taken up residence in the icing sugar, caster sugar and crystal sugar canisters. I had to toss the lot our and re stock. Can’t do anything much in the garden because the ground is so wet. Slime and mould is growing on all the paths. And you know what else……………it’s still raining as I type.
We are supposed to be going to a birthday picnic tomorrow. To be held at the seaside. Can’t see it happening. Guess why?
Sunshiny here, going to be a good drying day…I finished mowing the front yesterday but need to whippersnip in the chook yard…

I clearly recall a day.. new years eve/NYD when I left here, my thermometer read 49ºC(though BOM didn’t agree).. When I hit Melbourne it was sunny and around 32ºC followed instantly by a hailstorm.. When we got on the ferry to Tassie (spirit of Tasmania).. I looked at the gap where the back door closed and thought.. “why am I putting all my investment in life on this one boat?”
All night she upended on 5-8 m swells.. Upon reaching Davenport.. We spent three days huddling around a stove because it was only 8ºC out.. Snow on Cradle Mountain.
I asked the locals.. they told me it had been 40ºC the day before … “come back in autumn, it is stable then.”

28.3 here, but “apparently” 33.?? Humidity 100%, as it has been for the past week to 10 days…bahahahahaha!!

Yep. I’ve potted up a dozen cape gooseberry plants and between mixing soil and doing that, I was dripping. Currently still in the twenties here, I think, and overcast.
I was right….26. Humidity at 56% but falling very fast. It was 90% a couple of hours ago.
Dry, south easterly (nice), flooffy clods every where…26C atm but “apparently” 29…I guess it would be, in the sun…indoors work until 16:00 hrs, as per normal summer routine…need to vacuum and mop the floors…the latter because it doesn’t look like rain any time soon and it’s hard for the floors to dry when it is raining / showering / misting…

nah, its just the two favourite crops of the PNGean. They’re easy to grow, easy to harvest, easy to cook and easy to sell. All win win win. They do grow a lot of Pak Choy and Chickens are a favourite item to sell on a Sunday morning market.

I don’t know why but we have been blessed with excessive rain and cooler weather. It’s raining again today. I’m noticing that a lot of plants have a branch or two that are hanging limp and yellowing. It can only be from all the wet. A little sun on occasion but mostly grey and wet. Oh for a full sun day or two. Weeds are getting away from me. Going to seed and I can’t glypho in this weather. At least the accessible ones are easy to pull.

it has been a lovely Autumn day here, at last. Low 20s and a cool southerly breeze.
Our BOM (nearest radar) has been “out” since 15th March…
It feels cold here. We only pushed a 16 today. Which is a rather stark contrast to last Mondays’ mid thirties. I think I’d like it somewhere in the middle. A couple of times when the clouds cleared I noticed The Sun still has his power…..

lovely and cool here. Currently 13.5C with a mid 20s maximum expected and the top temperature for the week will be Wednesday with a possible 30C and rain on Thursday. Minimums are getting to single figures (just how I like it.) Looks like the Autumn break has finally arrived.
Good afternoon. I missed this morning because I was outside. And filling the puppy’s new beanbag. We were 8 degrees this morning. I don’t know what it is at the moment, but I’m only wearing a t-shirt with my gardening pants.
About to eat some lunch, do a little bit of painting and sanding and make some biscuits.
i’ve been up and about since first light
- wonderful day and an even better morning.
the jerusalem artichoke is just flowering – that 2m high ‘tree’ to the right of centre – and on its right is the purple flowering amaranthus.
in the foreground the lebanese cuey didn’t grow up its tripod – but produced nice cueys all the same.

the tropicana cannas are just starting to flower and their leaves are colourful and cheery

Those cannas look attractive. Doesn’t realy matter if they never flower does it?

The Jerusalem Artichokes are great windbreak screening plants and pollinator attractants but they are rather invasive if water is available and their shade is often undesirable.. Of course, one may think yes well I’ll eat the tubers.. that’ll hold them back.. but this never seems to eventuate.. unless of course you are otherwise very short of something to eat.
Cannas, I never tried to eat but though attractive they used water better used on other things.
I still grow the artichokes, because of the reasons I mentioned.

the fartichokes are very windy but we have make wine from them. they are perpetual because any tuber left in the ground will resprout.
i’m using sprinklers this year so their position gets the benefit of the mandarin irrigation.

Hooray!!
Well I wasted ergs driving to work only to find that nobody else came and that though I was capable of getting work done without them, surgical incisions came to a halt after one hour due to precipitation. Scudding showers are keeping it that way so I’m now making Eremophila cuttings at home.
We’re getting blown away here. I’ve been out chasing tumbling chook food and water dishes. All refilled and secured now though. Chooks look like they’ve been blown inside out. A shed door keeps opening so I’ve occy strapped it to a nearby fence.
Wind turbines would be making a killing, if I had them.
The mans crook, been in bed for some days from a bug going around. I know whole households down with it. I’m fine. I don’t seem to get the illnesses that hubby does. My batteries are on full charge as usual :)

big storm band about to go over. lots of wind. TV signal keeps dropping out.
down the bottom where all that red and black is:

the past hour just brought my rainfall reading up from 24 to 55mm.
We’ve had 2mm today. With winds up in the 70-80km/hr gusts. Up on Mt William across the plain from us, it gusted to 107km/hr. But there’s no-one up there.

The wind towers are braked in high winds. They get damaged. They go too fast for the turbines. And you can get tower strike, where the blades hit the tower.

Gees yes central Vic copped a battering. I’m off to a friends in Tallarook tomorrow and hoping her farm is still standing.
I’m going to see hundreds of chickens and a natural chicken farm with some beautiful breeds, phoenix, guinea fowl and others. Not buying any or bringing any home lol, just seeing a natural set up.

Hooray they have put in a new doohickey at the “local” radar, I understand the old doohickey either fell off or just plain wore out…we were without local radar for about 8 days…had to use a coastal one at 512km … during the interim there were, thankfully, no big weather systems to upset the 35 return flights a week for which the radar was installed to help with happy landings …

We had some pretty wild winds but nothing fell over and no roofs lifted off. Though the police helicopter surveyed the area in fine detail, in between gusts. Apparently a local man was a partner in an $18M marijuana crop found in Victoria the day before. So they spent three days here going over the same old ground.
Have had a good day today. Clear sky but it got a bit warm. 33c.

We have sunshine and then we have big grey fluffy clods. Livio said he can’t predict what’s going to happen over the Easter break, weather wise that is. We are planning to have a BBQ with family and friends on Saturday night. It might end up being held in the garage. Just won’t be the same but it wouldn’t be the first time either.

Kind of wet here, most of the irrigated cotton should be off by now and so far I have only seen green heads of grain on the sorghum. Only one farm tho’: all the rest is yet to “seed up” or whatever they call it…so the rain is quite welcome…
this is a hot (28C) day in autumn and we are irrigating in the garden – while the clay cracks wide open in the paddock
below: the poa grasses have ‘died’ but will live again when the rains come

below: this pool garden gets irrigated and the geraniums and cannas are flowering

Raining here…

We’re getting the same sort of rain here but it’s been doing it for weeks. Yesterday we woke to sunshine but it only lasted half the day. I know how awful it can be when there isn’t any rain but I’m ready for some dry weather for a week or two………….please. It’s even become a risk to walk around the yard because the ground is so slippery. Pavers, paths and driveway are treacherous. A big clean up job when we get some fine weather.
Raining again here, of course it is: I have the dog’s blankets and my sheets on the line, first time since about September last year…it looks like the clods might be lowering, I’ll go check the BoM
Yup, more coming but nothing behind it so I’ll leave the laundry on the line…the “new” hens thought it was massive wings (I suppose) when I pegged the blankets out yesterday and went and hid under the shrubs….they have never seen anything hanging on the Hills Hoist before…

We have sunshine and clods this morning but a storm is predicted for this arvo. Either way the ants are swarming. They were moving in a battalion on the verandah wall. I sprayed. Next thing D sings out that the kitchen is smothered with ants so all I did was send them on another route. All dead now though the kitchen walls will have to be washed down. Iwon’t even talk about what they are like in the garage and the shed.

drizzly rain here in Madang. Beautiful sunny day yesterday, but that’s all gone. Some good heavy falls around the place last night, thought I was gonna need a boat to get through one pot hole… Still it is nice to wake up over water looking out at Krangket Island.
Chilli here…I momentarily thought about closing some windows this morning…
26C here but the breeze is chili…
Ten degrees outside here. I have lit the woodheater this afternoon because I had visitors, but it’s only coaling away slowly. I won’t stock it up for overnight. I prefer to burrow under the blankets.
34ºC here in Rabaul today… still 31ºC when I went for a swim in the ocean at 6pm….
OK, I’m jelly…
26 degrees is not chilly! The recommended indoors temp for buildings is about 23 degrees, I think. I have the cardie off at 16 or 17 degrees. Of course, if you are sitting around doing nothing it’s a little bit different and the cardie doesn’t come off until 18 or 19 degrees.

:)
comfort level is 20C – most aircons are set to 20-21C
I think 15 – 25C is an acceptable range for indoors – provided you dress accordingly.

This precipitation was a bit of a shock…it’s coming up to the district “Show weather”, our Shows will kick off soon and traditionally the local one was the 3rd week of May. Clear, cold starry nights known by the locals as Show Weather aka Good Rum Weather…lol! Normally this time of year is very dry (and somewhat cold) but sometimes too we get the last of the seasonal rains before the dry winter kicks in….

We’ve had 2mls over 24 hours. Not dancing yet.
We’re still getting the odd shower, 7 ml (28 points) since 09:00, think I might head off and snuggle soon…I think that High around the SE of Australia needs to move north and then South of the Border can have their wet winter…

That’ll double up and intensify without moving much north and will keep the south dry at least until Sunday night/Monday.

Wild storms in Perth, I see…
very hot for may – 30C for the last two days.
…a record dating back 80 years or so.
the nights are hot as well.
the birds are still all here, the leaves are green and still on the deciduous plants, the indian summer goes on.

I was hearing that on the news the other night, and that we are looking like a mild winter this year. Very pleasant here the last few days with around 23C but we really need some rain.

If it is raining TDC on this map then I’m probably getting some.
Just looking at the BOM radar I thought BlueGreen and RoughBarked would surely be getting some rain…
We are receiving the scrag end of the yuge low that battered Perth a few days ago…supposed to be raining for the next 3 days…of course it is, I’m planning to move “stuff” from the old house on an uncovered trailer…

THE district’s dry area farmers are rejoicing after one of the most critical rain events in recent years fell this week.
See your ad here
Grain growers have been locked in a race against time in recent weeks, many fearing catastrophic crop failure if the big dry continued for the rest of the month.
But on Monday it fell like manna from heaven, with consistent drops of 10mm-plus across the region.
Myall Park farmer Terry Molloy, who runs a 8500-hectare wheat and canola property, said while he had managed to dry sow much of his wheat crop, the 14mm he received on Monday would give them the “drink they needed”.
“This is just brilliant timing and has given us the perfect start,” Mr Molloy said.
“Quite a bit of the wheat has come up but this was the drink they needed to keep going.
“It’s also given us the optimum window to put in more canola.
“Commodity prices are strong and the dollar is falling – it’s a good news story.”
He said the long, hot summer had affected sub-soil moisture but this week’s rain was the “ideal amount” to dampen paddocks.
Merriwagga barley farmer Lawrence Higgins has received more than 10mm on his property this week and said it could have made the difference between a good year and a disastrous one.
“The crop isn’t in the ground yet but this gives us a chance,” Mr Higgins said.
“50mm would have been nice but 10mm is better than nothing.”
Grain Link Griffith grains manager Richard Gale said current commodity prices were robust.
“Historically, they’re up there in the top percentages – about $310 a tonne for APW wheat,” Mr Gale said.
“With drying conditions, the spread between the different grades of wheat has narrowed.
“Barley has also become a sought-after commodity for farmers looking to feed stock due to the recent dry conditions.
“It’s certainly been a welcome rain and with some follow-up rain shortly, it could be a great season.”
Robbie Lennard from Wagga Bureau of Meteorology said the rain was caused by a cold front linked to a low to the south of the MIA.
He said showers were possible today and tomorrow before finer weather for the rest of the week.

good news, as long as there is follow up rain. Some farmers on the radio have said that 10mm is quite not enough, causing patchy germination depending on how deep the seed is in the soil.

Yeah.. the saving grace at the moment is that wind and sun have been low on the horizon and we’ve had passing sprinkles up to this morning.. all up this week 18.5 mm for me.
We could do with some more as soon as we can get it of course.bluegreen said:

nobody’s planted here, but the rain is plenty, so they will do so as soon as they get onto the muddy paddocks.

Since this area is an irrigation area, those without water are dry area. Otherwise they are known as mixed farms where wheat and sheep are the staples.

It could be because, there are swamplands and arid lands in your region.
Dryland farming is a recognized technique:

Mixed farming can be dryland farming.

Mixed farming can also be practiced on irrigated farms.
As I pointed out earlier.. In my area because the definition is an irrigation area within a larger dryland farming area, we have fallen into the pattern of calling them irrigation area farmers and dryland area farmers the latter which has been shortened to simply dry area. This may be because there are both here in the same area and there is a clear line of definition between the irrigated area and the dry area.

A lot of my deciduous trees such as walnuts and mulberries don’t look like it has got cold enough yet. I haven’t seen a frost this year .. yet. From my memory record, frost can occur here from late March, early April to early December but I have seen years where it didn’t frost until the end of June. One thing is for sure though, that we never get through July without everything going black.

Up to 6 mm now and though the radar says it has nmoved, the air is still just wet and drippy and did I say it was nippy? We’ve struggled to get to 10.7ºC and the relative humidty has held at 100%.
Atually my rain gauge says 7.5 mm So I’m wetter than I thought.
Raining…just dropping straight down from the sky…there goes the planting window for the local farmers…

Supposed to be 22C but it feels colder, apparent is 19C but it feels colder in the house…which is OK because all windows are open and of course house is cooler than outside in summer…
I think Melbs weather forecasters have had too many warm toddys perhaps. Supposed to be 9C o’nite and no frost but..there’s frost alright. Same past few nights too, much colder than forecast.

Going to be a max of 26C today, I think it will be fine and sunny…but the weather boffins say there will be significant clod cover…once the clods move off those south easterlies will bring winter to us for sure…

Well this lot has gone off the radar and there’s nothing else on the radar but the boffins are still saying 90% chance of 5-10 today and 100% of 20-40 tomorrow.

True and the spots the sun can see through are few.
Well I just stepped outside with my secatuers after doing the inside chores and down it came. It will just be another passing shower but it’s enough to turn me off doing the cutting back I had planned. Didn’t even get a chance to pick the tomatoes.

Might as well look up what the midday movie is about.

Sometimes I’ve looked at the BOM radar and said “Yep, all clear” and some hours later, rain has come from nowhere…
Ah there is some more coming but it has to wet South Australia yet. Might be here on the weekend. http://www.essentialenergy.com.au/content/stormtracker

plenty rain here now… 15-20mm I guess…. and surprisingly warm temps.
I have sprayed all over the block and outside on the verge. it’s all turning yellow now. I decided to spray paths crisscrossing the property because the soursob grew to ankle height and the strappy grasses were up at knee height, so pants and socks were sopping wet after a walk around the place.
it was raining in the Gawler township as well and the trendy old folk have all bought hoodies. from the rear you can’t always tell a person’s age with a hoody – so everyone here is walking around looking like a thug – including me.
