A fine self portrait by the Curiosity Rover at the ‘John Klein’ Drilling Site. Gives a real sense of the middle of nowhere that this machine is at. Warning – giant image size:

It’s a very complicated bit of kit. Note the many dust and stone particles starting to accumulate on its flatter surfaces. There are also a few deep dents in the wheels.

It’s landing was the best, simply the best.
I gave it no chance, I was confident it would crash and burn to ashes the dreams and hopes of a generation of NASA scientists.

I still don’t know why you considered the landing routine so problematic.

The number of things that could have gone wrong was rather overwhelming.

Evidence suggests otherwise…in this case.

Well the thing is landing on Mars. There’s not a very good track record of getting there successfully (although the odds are getting better).

Well, none of the things that could have gone wrong did go wrong.
Be interesting to try to land a hundred of them and see how many make it.

The landing routine was very similar to those of the Apollo program with the added decelerant of a parachute.

in so far as they both landed, yes, in just about any other way, no

In the end you are relying on thrusters to slow the craft down. I had faith that these thrusters would work as planned.

all four had to fire, and with a similar amount of thrust.. any asymmetric situation would have gone tits up rather quickly.

Quite possibly.
I suspect what they did was stitch together a few photos into one so they could eliminate the camera arm.

NASA explains: The rover’s robotic arm is not visible in the mosaic. MAHLI, which took the component images for this mosaic, is mounted on a turret at the end of the arm. Wrist motions and turret rotations on the arm allowed MAHLI to acquire the mosaic’s component images. The arm was positioned out of the shot in the images or portions of images used in the mosaic.

This whole concept of image manipulation at the source has got me intrigued. Does the rover send the original images as well as the mosaic?
