Stonehenge was ancient rave spot: researchers

At least that is what the ABC newsite states.

Of course the body of the article does refer to a grave site. I suspect the work experience kid needs a clip over the ear.

It’s the “mass celebrations” and “vast communal feasts” which alludes to an outdoor rave spot.

Could it also perhaps have been a debating society? and by it’s large size they could have held mass debates?

Sorry, but this is nothing new. Professor Mike Parker Pearson has been working there for ages and has been arguing this theory for years. There have been numerous documentaries made about this in the last 5 years or so, based upon solid archaeology. This is a very shallow and poorly written article, with a stupid headline. Very disappointing from the ABC, must be a slow news day to dig up a story at least 5 years old and present it as if it were something new.

Yep, I know what a rave is. I also read this article, last evening:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2013/mar/09/archaeology-stonehenge-bones-burial-ground?INTCMP=SRCH

It talks about burial sites. The ABC article is about the same research.

About 500 years between burial site and party festival. I could well imagine one morphing into the other, regular gatherings to honour the dead slowly turning into general festivities, then the dead slowly forgotten.

Luckily we are now civilised.

On Thursday I drove about three hours to a funeral in western Victoria. The completely non-religious service was held in the RSL club, and we waited a respectful five minutes, after the hearse left, before we attacked the bar. We then proceeded to the pub.
