My green manure has been growing as snug as a bug in a rug under its mosquito net, but the time came for it to be dug in…

don’t know yet! the soil was in a poor state at the end of the hot dry summer so I wanted to do something to condition it – hence the green manure. I will let this break down but by then it will be winter so not much good planting anything then, although I might consider another crop of green manure…

But mainly I’m just getting it ready for Spring planting which will probably be my usual tomatoes, capsicum and zucchini…

digging in wasn’t that hard, except I would forget where I had dug and turn it up again! lol!

just waged war on a climbing rose I had been given but wasn’t performing that well flower wise. It tended to grow 20 foot canes with a single flower at the end where I couldn’t appreciate it. I tried tying canes down for lateral growth, which would be still long and whippy and above my head. I also tried terminating the main canes for side shoots, but they would still head for the sky. So I have reduced it to a stump. I figure it will either sulk, take off with a vengence and be just a bad as before, or decide to become a bush rose. I am hoping for the latter but expecting one of the former, lol!

I suspect it was bred as a bush rose but displayed aberrant behaviour, because on the tag it had bush crossed out with texta, and climbing written in. If I am not happy with it after another 12 months then it’s coming out because the thorns are nasty when you are trying to garden around it.

I’m not really a rose person anyway, but at one stage people were giving them to me as presents.

speaking of spades….i like the one Pete uses nowadays in GA tv show. it gives you a foot hold right in the middle, instead of the usual side/edge foot holds.

my green manure was planted late..still got a month or so to go. i used the Goodman’s seed green manure mix. it’s fab tab for cold weather green manure growing.

yes, I like Pete’s spade too. Never seen one like that anywhere and I’ve wondered if it was specially made.

When I checked my records my green manure was planted early November. Didn’t realise it was that long ago!

I bought it at the Melbourne International Garden Show. It came as a set with a fork as well, both stainless steel. I’m not sure if it is available in the shops though.

I don’t see why not….. any green manure turned back into the soil has to be better than none at all. Just don’t let it flower as that will take all the goodness from the plant into the flower.
