It is raining in Melbourne, in the middle of the official practice season. Could be interesting if qualifying is dry – they won’t have much useful testing to set up the car.

Oh, it’s just that Mr buffy has the TV on and they are talking to lots of people who I suspect must be celebrities because I don’t know any of them. With the exception of Leo Sayer, who I do recognize. And I seem to recall that when Red did the race he deliberately drove like a grandpa and came last. I think maybe he was not asked back again.

I listen to Red Symons on breakfast radio, (774 Melbourne) and I find him amusing.

One big nut to hold the whole wheel on. One bloke on the air-wrench to undo and re-do the nut. One bloke to lift the old wheel off, one bloke to lift the new wheel on. Jacks are just trolleys that work like a lever.

About 5 seconds stationary. They don’t refuel in the pits any more because it’s too dangerous.

They must make at least one tyre change if it is a dry race. Each team are supplied the same tryes. There are always two compunds – a hard and a soft. Each car must do one stint on each. The soft ones go faster but wear out quicker.

Usually cars do 2 or 3 stops.

Since about 5 years ago. They decided it was getting dangerous. All the pit crews and camera crews in full fire gear. So they scrapped it in the interests of safety. There have been one or two incidents but there was no one incident which changed the rule.

I was wondering how Vettel made up 3 seconds in the sapce of one or two laps in the last pit-stops. He turned his fuel up to maximum against team orders and did a some really hot laps. Webber in the mean-time was following team orders and running lean to save fule. When he makes his last stop Vettel is right on top of him.

I don’t think they had a choice, without an engine problem, punctures or other plausible reason for a DNF Webber looked to be in real danger of winning so they had no other option than get Vettel to tell him to take him out.

From the Guardian:

McLaren reacted to Hamilton’s pit-lane gaffe by tweeting: “Feel free to pop in and say ‘Hi’ any time @lewishamilton.”

Ran out of fuel in qualifying. After qualifying cars are supposed to have 1 litre of fuel left to provide a sample for testing to make sure they aren’t adding anything illegal/ Running out of fuel means no sample so he was relegated to dead last. team deided to start from it lane instead so they could change the set-up on the car.

I think the real drawback to this idea is how much you would have to spend to be competitive.

There is a form of motor racing in Sweden I think, which is designed to be low cost. One of the rules is that the winning car is up for sale and I think there was a price limit so no one spends a fortune on mods only to see them picked up by a competitor after the cars first win for 500 bucks.

You’ll end up with one team dominating, probably the one with most money. Interesting from a technical POV but boring racing. It’s a balance thing.

hehe – I have the Formula 1 live timing opne in another window, every time a driver does a new fastest lap his name shows up in purple. The same purple we use here… I keep instinctively clicking on the driver’s name thinking it’s a new post :)

Riccardo 7th,

Webber DNF. had a crash and lost a front wing, then his team didn’t fasten the real wheel in the pitstop, which fell off before he could make it all the way around back to the pits.

Roy and HG did a bit where despite his best efforts he was in danger of finishing the race but at the last minute despite team orders his turbo was supposed to blow he managed to get a puncture and DNF with only minutes to spare.

If anything I would have thought the other way around. Plenty of female drivers would have the courage and mentality to do it, just that it is physically demanding. The male drivers train like athletes in terms of fitness and strength to cope with the pounding they get due to G-Forces. Female drivers would be subjected to exactly the same physical stresses, so if anything this might be an area where a female driver might not be able to match it with a male driver.
