Two big days ahead, fingers crossed for Webbs and Ricciardo.
It is raining in Melbourne, in the middle of the official practice season. Could be interesting if qualifying is dry – they won’t have much useful testing to set up the car.
Has weber crashed yet?
Not that I care, it just seems to be a forum meme, and I wouldn’t want to be left out.
The commentators suck, wish they’d use the BBC guys.
We’ve got Grossjeans for the crash meme now.
That is so 2008 Sibeen.
The current meme is did he lose 5 places due to a slow start?

I think Daz and AJ are doing alright. They are both experienced racers in past lives
Bucketing down. Absolutey bucken bucketing down.
I blame sibeen for the rain delay. He was so excited to have rain. I reckon he did a rain dance.

Don’t be silly. Although I have been smoking my pipe…perhaps that’s what did it.
That better be a peace pipe.
Still, a wet Q1 will mix things up a bit and make for interesting stuff.
20 minutes delay, now.
30 min delay now. getting dark.
BOM radar doesn’t look promising.
Is the cricket going better than F1?

Hmmmm….
we’re underway
A few crashes there – good stuff :)
Pretty exciting, all up. Nice work guys.

Very good, and the BBC commentators…;)
Nows it’s bucken fucketing down again. Won’t get Q2 underway any time soon.
I’m calling it a day. I don’t reckon they’ll get back on before it gets too dark.
They need to have 4WD on the cars now just to deal with all that water.

Might come good.

Not good enough, so it seems. Delayed until tomorrow. Q2 starts 10am Qld time, 11am funny-southern-states time. You were quite correct, p_p.
What day is the actual race on?

Ha, I used to do ~$20 bets (top 3), lost too many times to be enjoyable…lost all once.
Can anyone remember how long ago it was that Red Symons did the celebrity race at the Melbourne Grand Prix? And did he only get to do it once?

No idea buffy. Seems a rather specific question?
Oh, it’s just that Mr buffy has the TV on and they are talking to lots of people who I suspect must be celebrities because I don’t know any of them. With the exception of Leo Sayer, who I do recognize. And I seem to recall that when Red did the race he deliberately drove like a grandpa and came last. I think maybe he was not asked back again.
I listen to Red Symons on breakfast radio, (774 Melbourne) and I find him amusing.

Quite a smart man apparently, quite a smart arse too…
His degree is in Pure Maths, poik.
I wonder what they do with the celebrity cars? Are they used in other races? With them being flogged around a race track, panel damage and paintjob I cant see them being worth much.

Demo cars? A panel job is cheap and easy when you’re the manufacturer…

They’re nicely run in by the time they’ve finished the weekend :)

One big nut to hold the whole wheel on. One bloke on the air-wrench to undo and re-do the nut. One bloke to lift the old wheel off, one bloke to lift the new wheel on. Jacks are just trolleys that work like a lever.

About 5 seconds stationary. They don’t refuel in the pits any more because it’s too dangerous.
A 3.6 and 4.0 second stops just now…

They have electronic sensors that would check it several times each second :)

They have to start on whatever fuel they need to get to the end.

Granted I don’t follow developments in this “sport” very much but I am curious to ask: Since when?
party_pants said:

Gotcha. I can remember when how much fuel to start with was a real game of strategy Was there a few incidents with fire that brought about the change?.
bob(from black rock) said:

They must make at least one tyre change if it is a dry race. Each team are supplied the same tryes. There are always two compunds – a hard and a soft. Each car must do one stint on each. The soft ones go faster but wear out quicker.
Usually cars do 2 or 3 stops.

Since about 5 years ago. They decided it was getting dangerous. All the pit crews and camera crews in full fire gear. So they scrapped it in the interests of safety. There have been one or two incidents but there was no one incident which changed the rule.
Just been directed to this video of Kimi Raikkonen.
That’s the kind of straight talking we need on TV.

Rather extraordinary.
I still don’t know about team orders though.
I guess it’ll give the commentators and motor jounalists something to bang on about.

I think it will. I think it will.
I was wondering how Vettel made up 3 seconds in the sapce of one or two laps in the last pit-stops. He turned his fuel up to maximum against team orders and did a some really hot laps. Webber in the mean-time was following team orders and running lean to save fule. When he makes his last stop Vettel is right on top of him.

It seems to me it’s impossible to police. May as well let the get on with it,

I don’t think they had a choice, without an engine problem, punctures or other plausible reason for a DNF Webber looked to be in real danger of winning so they had no other option than get Vettel to tell him to take him out.
From the Guardian:
McLaren reacted to Hamilton’s pit-lane gaffe by tweeting: “Feel free to pop in and say ‘Hi’ any time @lewishamilton.”
bumpity – bump…
Webber starting dead last from the pit lane.

Ran out of fuel in qualifying. After qualifying cars are supposed to have 1 litre of fuel left to provide a sample for testing to make sure they aren’t adding anything illegal/ Running out of fuel means no sample so he was relegated to dead last. team deided to start from it lane instead so they could change the set-up on the car.
adjust spelling to suit.
bugger. well maybe their will be more entertaining interaction between him and his self engrossed team mate.
ive said it before and ill say again
i want to see foruma unlimited..
give them a maximum size for the car (width, length, height) and thats it
anything goes.. fuels, engines, bodies, technology, brakes, whatever .. whatever you can come up with..

I think the real drawback to this idea is how much you would have to spend to be competitive.
Riff-in-Thyme said:

There is a form of motor racing in Sweden I think, which is designed to be low cost. One of the rules is that the winning car is up for sale and I think there was a price limit so no one spends a fortune on mods only to see them picked up by a competitor after the cars first win for 500 bucks.

You’ll end up with one team dominating, probably the one with most money. Interesting from a technical POV but boring racing. It’s a balance thing.
hehe – I have the Formula 1 live timing opne in another window, every time a driver does a new fastest lap his name shows up in purple. The same purple we use here… I keep instinctively clicking on the driver’s name thinking it’s a new post :)
What is happening with the F1? No TV up here, you see.
Just finished:
Alonso
Raikkonan
Hamilton
followed by Vettel, Button, Massa, Riciardo, Di Resta, Grosjean, Hulkenburg.
but about half the drivers under investigation for using DRS under yellow flags, probably wont know the real results till tomorrow.
Thanks. And the Aussies?

Riccardo 7th,
Webber DNF. had a crash and lost a front wing, then his team didn’t fasten the real wheel in the pitstop, which fell off before he could make it all the way around back to the pits.
Riciardo 7th.
Weber, buttfucked by his pit crew. Wheel fell off.

Roy and HG did a bit where despite his best efforts he was in danger of finishing the race but at the last minute despite team orders his turbo was supposed to blow he managed to get a puncture and DNF with only minutes to spare.

SIR Stirling Moss has infuriated female drivers by claiming they are not mentally tough enough to compete in Formula One.
If anything I would have thought the other way around. Plenty of female drivers would have the courage and mentality to do it, just that it is physically demanding. The male drivers train like athletes in terms of fitness and strength to cope with the pounding they get due to G-Forces. Female drivers would be subjected to exactly the same physical stresses, so if anything this might be an area where a female driver might not be able to match it with a male driver.
