Sorry, Wookie, standard script blocks don’t work here, you need to get a bit more creative…
Script blocks really should be in the head of the page, or the outer context of the body, but anything we submit here goes inside a div in the body, as you’ll see if you view the frame source when you do a preview.

Ccratch that, if you read the instructions, everything works just fine in Chrome :P
I should’ve mentioned that in Firefox (and probably some other browsers), if you right click in the canvas, a menu will pop up that gives you the option to view the image on a blank page.
When you’re viewing the image you can right click to get another menu that lets you save the image as a PNG, but the saved image may look a bit weird, since it’s on a transparent background. It’ll look OK in a simple image viewer, but in fancier programs (like Firefox) it will get displayed on a grey chequered background.

That’s clever :)
Damm :)
what happened?
The link at the end of this post contains a self-decompressing JavaScript program that runs an animation of bodies obeying Newtonian orbital dynamics. Each body is considered to have insignificant mass, and it only interacts with the Sun in the centre of the canvas, not with the other bodies.
The bodies all start at the same point, with the same speed, but heading in different directions. The bodies trace out elliptical orbits of various eccentricity but identical period, so they all meet up back at the starting point.
The periods are identical because they all start with the same total energy per unit mass. The potential energy of a body is inversely proportional to its distance from the Sun, and its kinetic energy is proportional to the square of its speed.
For best results, open the link in a new tab or window (this can often be done by clicking with the middle button). This script uses the new HTML5 Canvas element to do the rendering. It should work in most modern browsers; sorry, it won’t work in old versions of Internet Explorer.
Link no worky in Chrome.
They all met up back at the starting point as soon as I clicked on it, so nothing actually happened.

1 this is a testing thread – the space has been dedicated so as not to disrupt the other part of the forum, which is fair enough. as this is a testing thread what i was doign is seeing exactly what would happen if i used one command with another – this is a testing thread

Yes, the red background gets reactivated if your mouse passes over that post. I could possibly do something about that, but I’m loathe to, since I’d have to use extreme techniques that I’d rather not reveal, techniques that could be used to modify the appearance of other people’s posts…

Nowt of the sort. We have a touchscreen with a CPU in the back, which doesn’t hold a lot so open more than 3 programmes and the Low Memory popup becomes a real PITA. We normally have a mouse, but one girl here keeps dropping it and it broke. Plus we ran out of USB ports to plug new ones into… so we just use the screen. I praise Dog for the day when programs like Fontasy set me free from the clutches of the dreaded Letraset. The joke going around where I was in the late ’80s was “How do you burn out an Epson LX 80? Letraset did release some software & digital fonts, and made the Pantone colour system available in a digital form, but unfortunately they weren’t able to maintain their success in the digital age. I suspect that their pricing policy was largely to blame…

letraset, gawd haven’t seen that for a while or mecanorma, which was better IMO.
I thought that might bring back a few old memories for you, Boris. :)Letraset did release some software & digital fonts, and made the Pantone colour system available in a digital form, but unfortunately they weren’t able to maintain their success in the digital age. I suspect that their pricing policy was largely to blame…
How does the clock know your timezone?
Can’t be from the IP, mine would say Sydney.

Sorry, no. But it should go up to 9007199254740992. That works out to over 285 million years, which ought to be adequate for this forum. :)

Why 53? I would have thought 63 for a signed 64-bit int.

It only looks obscure in decimal. 9007199254740992 is 2^ 53. JavaScript can handle much larger numbers, up to around 10^308, IIRC. But 2^ 53 is the largest integer it can represent exactly. You can subtract 1 from it and get the proper answer, but if you try to add 1 to it, it doesn’t change.

In the Real Olden Days, that was real gold leaf.

just a question
within programming i guess you’d use the ability to use much bigger numbers if you were trying to get ultra accurate results
using longer numbers slows the programme slightly?
will definitely use more memory to perform the same calculations?
when they went to the moon i guess the longer the number used the better?

I thought it would be something like that.

> using longer numbers slows the programme slightly?
Generally, it slows the program a lot, and requires major re-writing of the code. The CPU chip has the built-in ability to perform arithmetic on objects that fit into a machine word (or two), so such operations are very fast & simple to program. So a 32 bit machine can easily do arithmetic on numbers that fit in 32 bits, and it’s no big deal for it to do 64 bit arithmetic, but arithmetic on larger objects is a bit trickier.
Such objects need to be broken up and processed chunk by chunk. For medium sized numbers, the techniques used are essentially the same as those used when doing arithmetic on big numbers by hand, but for really large numbers advanced techniques are necessary.
> will definitely use more memory to perform the same calculations?
Sure. For moderately-sized numbers the additional memory requirement isn’t of much concern, but the extra processing time can be.
>when they went to the moon i guess the longer the number used the better?
Perhaps. But computers were a lot more primitive back then, and RAM was very expensive.
FWIW, virtually all Linux systems have an arbitrary-precision arithmetic program called bc, which is essentially a programable calculator that can be programmed using a C-like language. bc does basic arithmetic and some standad mathematical functions. It’s precision is only limited by your machine’s memory… and your patience.
And Python has a lovely arbitrary-precision arithmetic library called mpmath which comes with all sorts of fancy functions. mpmath isn’t part of the standard Python installation, but it’s free, and quite easy to install, and comes with excellent documentation.
>>when they went to the moon i guess the longer the number used the better?
The distance to the moon is about 4 × 108 metres. The width of an atom is about 1 × 10-10 metres. Really large numbers aren’t all that nessesary to get reasonable accuracy.
Or, they never went to the moon
*runs away *

It’s true, they never did go. I used to work with a bloke who knew a bloke whose cousin has seen a documentary about it called Capricorn One that proved that it was all done in a Hollywood studio.

No, it was meant to look like a whole star. If you tell your browser to “View image” it should show you the whole thing.

That the Govt service for you. So the guy who interviewed you is now upset and resigns and the departmental costs go down.

Tempory Protection Visa come through then.
You’ll get your Tic Gate pass stamped with a pineapple and everything now.
