Yes we dooooo, don’t we? (kitchy-koo voice)…

I’ve started a new thread, the other was getting a bit long…

It’s good news tho’… I went to collect some worm castings to put in a jiffy pot (P found a sprouted apple seed in one of his apples and I am under instructions to “plant it and see what happens”) and the worms, savaged prior to Christmas by the resident ants, are now F-A-T. Good thing I don’t know of any fishermen…

They are a beaut size…oh did I say that? all shiny and lively and healthy looking…I was wondering about if they were starving but I think the layer mash that I gave them about a month ago, may have saved the day…it’s all gone and the worms are portly (for worms)…

lol!

I fed my farms worm fattener mix about the same time as you and yep, nice and big now. I put in some avocado skin halves in just under the wet newspaper cover and they congregate in them. I take out a good pinch to feed the goldfish. And chooks.

I’ve got the dog poo one up and running and they are starting to attack the poop.

Went to put some scraps in the worm farm and there was …. well it looked bubbly, kind of…white and thready and bubbly…something that grew because of the chook food (Darling Downs golden yolk layer pellets)…so I have cleared all that out and put it in a sealed bag into the wheelie bin…taken the top layer of castings out and they will go into the vegetable-beds-in-the-making…only two worms in that layer…there was some more bubbly-thready stuff on the second tier but that was not so pervasive, scraped that off and into a sealed bag into the wheelie bin…the emptied tier is now on the bottom, not sure why, think I might have had a Brian spasm when I was putting the farm back together…put a couple of wetted The courier Mails on the bottom of it…have put the vege scraps on the middle layer underneath some more soaked Courier Mails…see how it settles down…worm count is minimal but what are there are f-a-t…hopefully there is eggs in the castings…

The vinegar flies were quite bad, I’ll pick up some more lime tomorrow, underneath the chicken roost needs a sprinkle…

Off to rake up the fallen cherry guavas…

Agreed. There’s food everywhere for worms, newspaper, weeds, egg cartons etc. But.. I’ve found worm farms time consuming and two I have on the patio get barely anything but they still survive. At times I’ve scraps in abundance to feed them with, other times it’s just soaked newspapers, or soaked dirt encrusted hessian bags.

The ones I have between fruit trees sitting directly on the ground though, what I call my ‘inground farms’ as they don’t have the liquid tray underneath, are powering on with all the liquid going straight to the tree’s roots. It’s been an experiment of sorts and I can see very good results. A dwarf lime I planted out 15 months ago has yielded four kilos of limes. Two other dwarf limes that are 4 and 5 years old that aren’t near a worm farm, are really struggling, with smaller fruit. They are half the height of the good one that’s loaded with fruit. They are all the same type and get the same water and nutrients. So I’ve been picking up unwanted worm farms to place in other areas between an apple and pear trees, another spot with a lemon and an orange and another will go next to the bigger lime at the back fence. I don’t harvest these inground farms, just keep adding scraps and watering them weekly. Eventually when all three trays are full, I will grab the top tray off and resite it and rake the casts about. I love it when I can see actual results.
