FWIW, in the last few weeks of the old forums, MZL managed to archive what material was still available at the time (the ABC had purged / lost a lot of the really old stuff years ago). I assume he’d be happy to make those archives available to anyone who was willing to host them.

I suppose so. The archives don’t take up a lot of space, and so it shouldn’t cost much to host them somewhere. Technically, it’d be pretty simple to do, especially if they were set up in a read-only format. But it’d be nicer if they were set up as a live forum… Maybe if we ask nicely cb88 would host them here…

Thanks. I don’t know if I would want to see them rise again as interactive forums, but there is a vast resource of information in those archives, contributed by a lot of people over a long time. I think it is a terrible waste that it is not available as a reference.
