Subject: the dead, killed, gaoled and disappeared scientist thread

Singapore, RoS – It has been a death that continues to arouse suspicion nine months later, besides spawning tensions across oceans between the United States and Singapore.

Authorities in Singapore orginally said Shane Todd – a 31-year-old engineer from the US found hanging in June 2012 – had committed suicide. But speculation that the nature of his death could have been far more sinister has continued to swirl amid talk of top-secret research, potential threats to US national security, and shadowy links between giant technology firms and the Chinese military.

A Chinese national has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison following his conviction for illegally exporting details of sensitive US military technology to China.

Sixing Liu, who was sentenced on Monday, was convicted in September by a federal jury in Newark, New Jersey, on nine of 11 counts, including possession of stolen trade secrets, violating the Arms Export Control Act and lying to federal agents.

Prosecutors said the defendant, who is also known as Steve Liu, stole thousands of computer files that detailed the performance and design of guidance systems for missiles, rockets and unmanned drones. He stole the files from L-3 Communications Holdings, where he was employed as an engineer

Fifty-year-old Alistair Beckham was a successful British aerospace- projects engineer. His specialty was designing computer software for sophisticated naval defense systems. Like hundreds of other British scientists, he was working on a pilot program for America’s Strategic Defense Initiative—better known as Star Wars. And like at least 21 of his colleagues, he died a bizarre, violent death. It was a lazy, sunny Sunday afternoon in August 1988. After driving his wife to work, Beckham walked through his garden to a musty backyard toolshed and sat down on a box next to the door. He wrapped bare wires around his chest, attached the to an electrical outlet and put a handkerchief in his mouth. Then he pulled the switch. With his death, Beckham’s name was added to a growing list of British scientists who’ve died or disappeared under mysterious circumstances since 1982. Each was a skilled expert in computers, and each was working on a highly classified project for the American Star Wars program. None had any apparent motive for killing himself

good to stuff a handkerchief in his mouth

when you have current flowing through your body you can’t scream – the rag in the mouth is for someone who is trying to scream before being electrocuted

In October of 1986 Arshad Sharif , who’d worked on satellite methods of detecting submarines, died from tying one end of a ligature around his neck, and the other end around a tree. He then got in his car and sped off with the gas peddle ‘jammed’ down. The coroner called it a suicide.

A 1987 death included Richard Pugh, who was a MOD computer consultant and a digital communications expert. He was found dead in his apartment with a bag over his head, his feet were bound and his body was tied in a rope that wrapped around his neck four times. The coroner called it an accident. Another scientist, Mark Wisner died in an extremely similar manner about three months later.

In 1986, Vimal Dajibhai was one week away from quitting Marconi. He had a new job lined up in London, and his friends and family claim he was excited for it. Then he allegedly committed suicide by jumping off a suspension bridge to his death. The original police report noted a needle-sized puncture on his left buttock. This mark was later written off as incidental to his impact. The coroner’s case is still open.

In 1985 Jonathan Walsh , who’d also been a digital communications expert, died from falling out of his hotel room. Before he died, he’d expressed a fear for his life. This coroner’s report is still open.

In 1987, Shani Warren wasn’t a scientist, but she was a personal assistant in a company that was acquired by GEC Marconi just four short weeks after her passing. She was found drowned in 18 inches of water with a noose around her neck, a gag in her mouth, bound feet, and her hands tied around her back. Coroner’s verdict is still open, but some have stated it was a suicide. That suicide would have included her binding herself, and then stumbling with bound feet and stiletto heals a short ways to her liquidy death.

Six scientists and a former government official have been sentenced to six years in jail for multiple manslaughter for giving the wrong advice about an earthquake which struck the Italian city of L’Aquila in 2009, killing over 300 people.

The seven, all members of a body called the National Commission for the Forecast and Prevention of Major Risks, were accused of negligence and malpractice in evaluating the danger and keeping the central city informed of the risks.

They have also been ordered to pay more than 9 million euros ($11.3 million) in damages to survivors in L’Aquila.

L’Aquila was reduced to rubble by the 6.3 magnitude quake on April 6, 2009, with 309 people killed and over 1,000 injured.

The case has drawn condemnation from international bodies including the American Geophysical Union, which said the risk of litigation may deter scientists from advising governments or even working in seismology and seismic risk assessments.

“The issue here is about miscommunication of science, and we should not be putting responsible scientists who gave measured, scientifically accurate information in prison,” Richard Walters of Oxford University’s Department of Earth Sciences said.

“This sets a very dangerous precedent and I fear it will discourage other scientists from offering their advice on natural hazards and trying to help society in this way.”

The scientists – Franco Barberi, Enzo Boschi, Giulio Selvaggi, Gian Michele Calvi, Claudio Eva and Mauro Dolce as well as Bernardo De Bernardis – a senior official in the Civil Protection Authority – were convicted of criminal manslaughter and causing criminal injury.

Under the Italian justice system, the seven remain free until they have exhausted two chances to appeal the verdict.

At the heart of the case was the question of whether the government-appointed experts gave an overly reassuring picture of the risk facing the town, which contained many ancient and fragile buildings and which had already been partially destroyed three times by earthquakes over the centuries.

The case focused in particular on a series of low-level tremors that hit the region in the months preceding the earthquake and which prosecutors said should have warned experts not to underestimate the risk of a major shock.

Eva’s lawyer Alfredo Biondi said the decision was “wrong in both fact and law” but the verdict, delivered in a tiny improvised court room in an industrial zone outside the still-wrecked city centre, was welcomed by relatives of the victims.

“This is not thirst for revenge, it is just that our sister is not coming back,” Claudia Carosi said.

More than three years later, much of the once-beautiful medieval city is still in ruins and thousands of people have been unable to return to their homes.

Defence lawyers said earthquakes could not be predicted and even if they could, nothing could be done to prevent them.

“If an event cannot be foreseen and, more to the point, cannot be avoided, it is hard to understand how there can be any suggestion of a failure to predict the risk,” defence lawyer Franco Coppi said before the verdict was delivered.

‘Imprecise’ warning
Prosecutors, who had only sought a four-year sentence, said they did not expect scientists to provide a precise forecast.

But they argued the commission had given “incomplete, imprecise and contradictory” information on the danger after a meeting on March 31, 2009, a few days before the earthquake.

The case is part of a wider controversy over the disaster in L’Aquila, which has been at the centre of a series of bitter rows over Italy’s disaster preparedness.

Central Italy is continuously shaken by low level tremors, very few of which precede bigger earthquakes and they are generally marked by no more than a brief statement from civil protection authorities.

Key to the dispute is the kind of cautious language, hedged by caveats and reserves which scientists typically use in predicting highly uncertain events, but which can be of limited use as a guideline for the general public.

According to scientific opinion cited by prosecutors, the dozens of lower level tremors seen before the quake were typical of the kind of preliminary seismic activity seen before major earthquakes such as the one that struck on April 6.

Instead of highlighting the danger, they said the experts had made statements playing down the threat of a repeat of the earthquakes which wrecked the town in 1349, 1461 and 1703, saying the smaller shocks were a “normal geological phenomenon”.

Italy is among the most earthquake-prone countries in Europe and has been struck repeatedly by lethal shocks, most recently in May 2012, when 16 people were killed and hundreds injured by a 5.8 tremor in the Emilia Romagna region.

The Galileo affair was a sequence of events, beginning around 1610, during which Galileo Galilei came into conflict with the Catholic Church over his support of Copernican astronomy.

In 1610, Galileo published his Sidereus Nuncius (Starry Messenger), describing the surprising observations that he had made with the new telescope, namely the phases of Venus and the Galilean moons of Jupiter. He went on to propose a theory of tides in 1616, and of comets in 1619. He argued that the tides were evidence for the motion of the Earth, and promoted the heliocentric theory of Copernicus (published in De revolutionibus orbium coelestium in 1543).

Galileo’s part in the controversies over theology, astronomy, and philosophy culminated in his trial by the Roman Inquisition in 1633, who found him “gravely suspect of heresy” and sentenced him to indefinite imprisonment. This was subsequently commuted to house arrest, under which he remained for the rest of his life.

hey good one i’d forgotten about these fellahs that were killed by mossad

Like three previous Iranian scientists ambushed on their morning commute, the latest nuclear expert to die on his way to work was a victim of Israel’s Mossad, Western intelligence sources tell TIME. Mostafa Ahmadi-Roshan, an expert on a phase of uranium enrichment, perished on a Tehran street on Wednesday after an assassin in a passing motorcycle attached a magnetized explosive to the side of his Peugeot 405. “Yeah, one more,” a senior Israeli official said with a smile. “I don’t feel sad for him.”

Wednesday’s attack followed the pattern of previous operations planned by Mossad and carried out over the past two years by Iranians trained and paid by Israel’s spy agency, according to intelligence sources. The targets were chosen from the ranks of scientists seen as crucial to Iran’s nuclear effort — the country’s top physicist, Majid Shahriari, was killed by a magnetized bomb in October 2010 — then shadowed for weeks to determine their routines and points of vulnerability. (PHOTOS: 60 Years of Israel)

A year ago, Iranian television broadcast the confession of one alleged agent who described studying a scale model of the home of the scientist he helped assassinate by hiding a bomb on a motorcycle outside the front door. “It was the exact copy of the real one, even the size, material, its color, the tree next to it, its asphalt, the street curb, the bridge,” said Majid Jamali Fashi on the air. He said he viewed the model in Mossad’s headquarters in Tel Aviv, which he described in detail. Intelligence sources confirmed Fashi’s involvement in a Mossad cell that the sources claim was revealed to Iran by a third country.

Fashi was sentenced to death for his role in the killing of nuclear physicist Massoud Ali Mohammadi, who suffered mortal shrapnel wounds in front of his house on Jan. 12, 2010. Three other nuclear scientists heard magnetic bombs snap onto their car doors during their commute to work — a method Fashi claimed he had also been taught by the Israelis. Besides Ahmadi-Roshan and Shahriari, the victims include Fereydoon Abbasi, a university professor who survived and was promoted to head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran. (PHOTOS: Terror in Tehran)

A fourth scientist, Darush Rezaei-Nejad, was killed outside his home by shots fired from a motorcycle on July 23, 2011. A student of electrical engineering, his connection to the Iranian nuclear program remains a matter of dispute.

The similarities among the attacks were not lost on Iranian authorities, who immediately blamed both Israel and the U.S. for Wednesday’s attack. “The bomb was a magnetic one and the same as the ones previously used for the assassination of the scientists and is the work of the Zionists,” Tehran’s Deputy Governor Safar Ali Baratlou was quoted as saying by the Fars News Agency.

Israel is officially silent on the incident. However, its top spokesman for the country’s military posted this on Facebook: “Don’t know who settled the score with the Iranian scientist, but for sure I am not shedding a tear.” The Obama Administration insisted it had nothing to do with the attack. “The United States had absolutely nothing to do with this,” National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor declared. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made her denial of U.S. involvement “categorical.” http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2104372,00.html

Alan Turing
AKA Alan Mathison Turing

Born: 23-Jun-1912
Birthplace: London, England
Died: 7-Jun-1954
Location of death: Wilmslow, Cheshire, England
Cause of death: Suicide
Remains: Cremated, Woking Crematorium, Woking, Surrey, England

Gender: Male
Religion: Atheist
Race or Ethnicity: White
Sexual orientation: Gay
Occupation: Mathematician, Computer Programmer

Nationality: England
Executive summary: Computing pioneer

Once he was a convicted criminal, Turing lost his security clearance and was barred from further cryptographic work with the British government. But because he was a homosexual Turing was doubly stigmatized for it was assumed by security forces that homosexuals were high risk, owing to the threat of blackmail. And although Turing was barred from further government work, he still possessed a great deal of highly classified information. What’s more, as a brilliant cryptologist and computer scientist, Turing might have seemed a tempting asset to foreign governments. Thus there are those that view Turing’s death as an assassination by British special forces, rather than suicide. Meanwhile his mother refused the notion of suicide as well. She postulated that his death was accidental, that his fingers had inadvertently become contaminated by chemicals from his lab (Alan M. Turing, 1959). Curiously, the half eaten apple found with his body was never tested for cyanide.

Now, there’s a truly expert assassination.

It was clearly a work of genius, and split-second timing of an extraordinary degree, to get both the ‘pick-up’ truck AND the other motorcyclist in just the right positions to ensure that Mr. Mason had the sort of crash which would guarantee his death.

David Christopher Kelly, CMG (14 May 1944 – 17 July 2003) was a British scientist and expert on biological warfare, employed by the British Ministry of Defence, and formerly a United Nations weapons inspector in Iraq. He came to public attention in July 2003 when an unauthorised discussion he had off the record with BBC journalist Andrew Gilligan about the British government’s dossier on weapons of mass destruction in Iraq was cited by Gilligan and led to a major controversy. Kelly’s name became known to the media as Gilligan’s source and he was called to appear on 15 July before the parliamentary foreign affairs select committee investigating the issues Gilligan had reported. Kelly was questioned aggressively about his actions. He was found dead two days later.

Dave Bartlett and Vanessa Hunt, the two paramedics who were called to the scene of Kelly’s death, have since gone public with their opinion that there was not enough blood at the location to justify the belief that he had died from blood loss. Bartlett and Hunt told The Guardian that they had seen a small amount of blood on plants near Kelly’s body and a patch of blood the size of a coin on his trousers. They said they would expect to find several pints of blood at the scene of a suicide involving an arterial cut. Two forensic pathologists, Chris Milroy of Sheffield University and Guy Rutty of Leicester University, dismissed the paramedics’ claims, saying it is hard to judge blood loss from the scene of a death, as some blood may have seeped into the ground. Milroy also told The Guardian that Kelly’s heart condition may have made it hard for him to sustain any significant degree of blood loss.

On 15 October 2007, it was discovered, through a Freedom of Information request, that the knife had no fingerprints on it. And neither did a bottle of water, a mobile phone, glasses nor three empty blister packs of pills found with him.

‘Bright’ climate change scientist, 35, was victim in horror cycle crash near Victoria Station Katharine Giles was researcher and lecturer at University College London Killed in horror crash during morning commute by truck turning left Comes just three months after death of her mentor at the university

A brilliant young climate scientist was this week crushed to death by a truck while cycling to work through Central London.

Katharine Giles, who has presented her work to MPs, was killed by the massive vehicle as it made a left turn in rush hour traffic near Victoria Station on Monday morning.

Dr Giles was a researcher and lecturer at University College London, recently named the fourth best university in the world.

The 35-year-old last year addressed politicians on the problems of fresh water storage in the Arctic, which was one of the focuses of her research.

She had worked at the Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling at UCL since taking her PhD from the university in 2005.

It is the second tragedy to hit the department in 2013, after its director Seymour Laxon died of a brain haemorrhage when he fell down a flight of stairs in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Dr Giles, who worked closely with him and had been tipped to become his successor, took over some of his research after his death and had published papers in a number of prestigious journals.

Her work included exploring the link between wind flow and melting ice, and she was awarded a fellowship from the Natural Environment Research Council.

Horrific: Dr Giles’s mangled bicycle lying in the road near Victoria station in Central London on Monday morning

The head of Dr Giles’s department, Philip Meredith, said: ‘It is with great sadness that I can confirm that our talented friend and colleague, Katharine Giles, died in a road traffic accident while cycling to work on Monday of this week.

‘Coming so soon after the accidental death of Katharine’s own closest colleague, Seymour Laxon, we are all left with a sense of the outrageous unfairness with which some of our best colleagues have been taken from us.

More… Aspiring mechanic, 16, died after surgeon pierced his vein using wrong instrument in minor operation Schoolgirl, 12, found hanged after being sent to bed over computer row with her twin brother

‘Katharine had a bright future ahead of her. She graduated with a first-class degree in Earth and Space Sciences from UCL, studied under Seymour for her PhD, and went on to forge her own career as a Research Fellow and most recently as a University Lecturer.

‘We greatly admired the bravery and sense of purpose with which she took on the many commitments in CPOM following Seymour’s demise, and it was clear that she was ready to provide the next generation of leadership in that field.

‘This makes it all the more difficult for us to accept that Katharine won’t now have the opportunity to reach the heights she was sure to achieve.’

Revealed: How a Blair fixer picked the judge for the David Kelly Inquiry just three hours after the weapons inspector’s suicide

Letter from Lord Hutton shows he was asked three hours after the death
He had not been identified and no cause of death had been established

sounds familiar?

Four engineers working at one of Turkey’s leading military electronics companies, who allegedly committed suicide, could all have been killed through telekinesis – the ability to manipulate or move objects with the mind, it is claimed.

Hüseyin Başbilen, who was one of the four working at the Aselsan corporation, which has won several defense and technology awards, was found dead in his car in August 2006.

Halim Ünal was shot in the head with one bullet in January 2007 while Evrim Yançeken fell from the balcony of his sixth-floor apartment nine days later.

Dammit, man, we’re scientists! Don’t try to flim-flam us with your mumbo-jumbo! We know there’s no such thing as telekinesis! These deaths clearly involved the proven science of using voodoo dolls to inflict harm.

So, it’s the people who ARE NOT wearing the tin-foil hats who are most likely to go mad. My choice of headwear is vindicated!

dr karl mentioned it once. you can actually beam sounds into peoples head, they will hear a voice being beamed into their head

its like when he mentioned that coal has around 2ppm of uranium in it and also other radioactive elements.

he doesn’t mention it much but when something halfway important and unbelieveable is mentioned its mentioned once

normally when a military project is being sabotaged they’ll either attack the scientists / engineers of the project, kill/bribe/injure etc

they might use someone in the gov or working in the project to sabotage it by throwing innumerable spanners in the works

The British security services may be guilty of killing recently pardoned code-breaker Alan Turing for being gay, a human rights campaigner has claimed.

Peter Tatchell has written to the Prime Minister insisting that the Government launch an investigation into the famous mathematician’s 1954 death by cyanide poisoning.

Turing, who was pivotal in cracking the German Enigma codes during World War Two which gave the Allies vital information about the Nazi’s movements, was convicted of homosexual activity which was illegal at the time.

oldest trick in the book

you get the enemy to kill their own key personnel by using your own agents to talk up the “security risk”
