Wakey wakey it’s April!
I’m up before the birds! the man woke me early making a racket off to early shift. Thanks love! might as well get up aye. I’ll continue on from yest’s housework burst.
I finally got to leave the house and visit my veterinary nurse, poultry partner in crime mate, for a cuppa and catch up last night. I took an Easter gift of a big mud cake for this large family of mum dad and 5 kids under 9. Phew.
I’m glad I did too. They are building some large wicking beds and were just about to spend a small fortune on shade cloth. I still have one of those recycled ones they can have.
Max is getting betterer and betterer each day, still unbalanced and terrified of jumping on and off the bed, so we have to lift him on and off all quivering and stiff with fright, but he quickly settles down to sleep in his favourite spot at the foot of the bed. Spoilt? Nah, he’s getting on in age now, can have what he likes.
Ok, cuppa now then better go re load that washing machine.

Good morning Gardeners. I was wondering why I was still in bed at 7.30am to listen to the local CFA Scheds. Then I remembered….Daylight Saving means it is dark until that time now…..I’ll be very glad next weekend when we dispense with it and I get my morning light back.

Just checking in after nearly 5 days without a computer…so I will be going back over the threads as time permits…
Hope you all had a lovely Easter. I did some pottering and could have done more but a bit here, a bit there, it all adds up.

Heading down the back soon with chainsaw and whippersnipper. The mower has been whisked off as it appears there is fuel in the oil…durrrr…not sure how that happened but the moral is to turn off the fuel line after each mowing “event” is completed. I have been shown how to mow the grass using the whippersnipper…

I’m back. Well I hadn’t actually gone but we had family visiting for 4 days over easter and then medical stuff on consec. days. Tomorrow we are off for a couple of days so don’t expect to hear from me till about Monday.
I hope you all had a lovely easter break. We certainly did. E bunny even bought me some chocolate which I’ve eaten already. Easter is so much fun when there are little kids around. We had an egg hunt on Sunday morning. Chocolate for breakfast. lol. We had BBQs and Banoffee pie. Yum! Roast pork and more Banoffee pie next day. Come to think of it we spent a lot of the time eating. We did leave out carrot for the Easter Bunny and some chocolate for the fairies in the fairy garden. We even had a milk tooth to leave for the fairies. The Easter egg tree was a hit but the little, fluffy, yellow chickens I had put in the branches kept disappearing. Greandaughter took a liking to them.
That’s it for my check-in tonight. I shall return next week. Be good or at least remember the date.

Hello again Holidayers. I’ve been reading, snoozing, going for coffee and preparing chicken and veggies for a stir fry. I thought you might all like to know that Autumn has sprung(?)…..the Autumn crocuses came out during the past 10 days. They aren’t really crocuses at all, but Sternbergia. But they are called Autumn crocuses.

We are back from Warrnambool. We went via Caramut to avoid the Murray to Moyners (charity cycling event), and then found roadside burns being done on the way back. Not impressed with the fellow with the STOP lollypop. Supposed to say to each driver “Close your vents, put your headlights on and put the windows up please. And drive slowly” This one said “Put your headlights on”. Difficulty with that was…..they were already on. We were in Mr buffy’s new Forester which does all the thinking for you and the lights were, in fact already on.
It’s been a grumpy morning here anyway. Mr buffy is less kind than me…..Murray to Moyners pissed on the trees opposite our house in the Botanic Gardens again this year. Right beneath the sign that says “Public Conveniences” and points to them about 80m away. And after other team members had pointed out where they were. And Mr buffy had shouted across the road that urinating in public is an offence and to (please) use the toilets provided. To no avail. So Mr buffy took a photo of the support vehicle and then rang the local police and reported it. And sent an email of complaint to the organizers. They were less than an hour into the ride, had just ridden through 30km of open country…..and they find it necessary to relieve themselves in the town. Not good enough. He also pointed out to the organizers that when the event started we were financial supporters, but have withdrawn support due to the increasing rudeness and uncouth behaviour of some of the cyclists and support crews.
It is possible there was no please involved in Mr buffy’s exchange.

Dirty buggers peeing in the town. I’d have called the firey’s to hose them clean.
Busy busy here, as usual :) Did the shopping and cleaned 2 freezers out and restocked one, the other tuned off.
I was given a complete home beer brewing kit and a big bag of apple windfalls. I wondered if I can make apple cider vinegar in the kit, but the sites talk of special bacteria’s and spoiled wine, but my eyes are spinning lol.
I might just add the apples and top with water and add a small bottle of purchased acv and see how it goes. I’ll wrap it in a dark blanket and leave it in the corner of the lounge room.
Got a big cake to make for 50 people for son in laws 30 th birthday later this month, starting it this week. I will freeze it. Choc butter-cake slab covered in blue buttercream icing, little boat and figure fishing on top, fish and reeds around the sides. He will love that.

I don’t think that is right HP. It’s something about what can be heard from adjoining properties. Or do you have a fixed system? There are limits on those because the noisy bit is outside the house.

Here you go. And it is after 7.00am that you can use it on a normal day. A bit later for a weekend or public holiday. And it is only if it can be heard from inside another premises (down at the bottom). I know this stuff for my lawn mowing exploits.

if you add yeast and yeast nutrient to that apple and water mix you get cider (or non-alcoholic cider). you do need a bottling clamp tho’

Morning everbody. The Pomolos are back in residence. We have been getting some good rain again. Certainly have no reason to complain about it being too dry round here. It’s a bit difficult to do any spraying though. The showers are unpredictable so it’s a sort of cross your fingers and hope situation.
Snake beans have been attacked by bean fly. At least that’s what I think it is. Never seen it before so I’m only going by Google images. We have had lots of feeds from them anyway. Frozen heaps too. Tomatoes looking good. Lettuce, ready to consume as are beetroot. Heaps of sugar peas growing and although the cape goodberries got eaten when first planted out, they are recovering. Might even get enough fruit to make some jam this year. Picked our second rock melon yesterday. Uncut as yet but my fingers ar crossed.
If all goes to plan we will be home all day today. One thing about always being away, the house tends to stay fairly clean. Can’t say the same for the washing though. Guess what I’m off to start doing?

Baking? lol. I hope it’s dry enough for washing. Welcome back :)
I got the washing dry but only just. Made a rhubarb, apple and passionfruit crumble that turned out really yummy. D is smiling.

isn’t it getting a bit cold for them to ripen now? Honeydews, yes.. but rockies love the hot weather.

that’s debatable – amongst my winter weeds are considerable numbers of self sown – corn, tomatoes, sunflowers, pumpkins and beans???
RB reckons they are hoping to go to seed – and this indian summer is favouring his theory
but I think the soil is so full of seed they will sprout out-of-season by mistake.

today was “get rid of most of the Ice Cream Bean Tree.” I’ve been sawing and clipping while dodging showers. We had a huge Ice Cream Bean tree and it collapsed with trunks falling outwards but not breaking off completely. All these trunks have kept growing expanding the area it covered, threefold. Too too big so we are cutting it back to a reasonable size. Huge job and I’m no carpenter. Who needs aerobics?

I was up at 6 am. Running about still. This and that. Raiding the worm farms again and got another tub of five thousand and they were sold and picked up within the hour.
I had Max back to the vet this morning. He’s having a relapse and falling about again, nystagmus is bad and the head tilt is severe. He’s booked in for a procedure tomorrow morning and they will extract some of his middle ear fluid and grow culture to find out exactly what bug it is, and to get some fluids into him. He’s a worry.

Bean Fly
These pests are tiny, glossy, black flies that appear in warm, humid weather to attack French bean plants that don’t have enough potassium. The best way to avoid these pests is to practice crop rotation, have plenty of compost in the bed where you grow French and climbing beans, and to hill-up soil around the stems of bean plants.
Look out for yellow spots and fine lines on bean leaves. They are a sign that the flies have laid eggs in the leaves. Remove and destroy damaged leaves to stop larvae tunnelling to the base of the stem, and give your bean plants a drink or two of organic-allowed seaweed tea.

Arvo green ones, what a gorgeous day.
I’m just waiting for the vet to ring me to pick up Max. It might be another hour or so, but I was told he is coping fine with the anaesthesia.
I’ve got another trailer load of bessa blocks yesty evening, the big ones, and I’m planning to make a better coop for the silkies, it’ll befox and vermin proof. In the meantime, my spinal surgeon ticked me off for missing my 6 month check up and not getting the xray done to check position and alignment of bolts and screws, so gotta do that asap, tomorrow. I made an appointment and put a big note on my pc.

Max coming home after 6.30 pm, what a long day, felt like a week. He was under the anaesthetic for 3.5 hours! He has deeper than usual ear canals and thickened canal walls, and a bony ‘space’ behind his ear that may be enlarged from the infection. Tissue and fluid samples sent off to the lab, will know exactly what it is in a few days.
At some stage his ear drum had burst and the infection has gone deeper. Poor thing :( He’ll be on stronger meds for a while and a course of prednisolone. Tomorrow he’ll be taken back for a pain jab.
I’ve cancelled any prior working bees and will keep him quiet for a few days.

Sorry to hear that HP. I hope it all comes good in the end. Cockers seem to have a lot of trouble with their ears. Ours did too.

Our citrus are dropping their fruit. Oranges, Mandies and Lemonade. I must be because of all the rain. No use picking much of it because it’s not ripe and very small. Perhaps a good time to give the trees a good prune back and put our faith in next year.

you could try sticky traps, but they can trap good critters too. As a preventative Sulphate of Potash.

You’re good BG. We have certainly had warm, humid weather. I will put your tips into action starting with Potassium. Thanks for sorting it for me. I am assuming that this covers snake beans as well as the french brans?

Too much rain might be the answer, they are gross feeders (I’ve read) and their roots are close to the surface…J & J down the back mulched their citrus like billy-o before they took off but they are not getting much fruit…I wonder if the heavy winter rains of last year had an effect on productivity?

They are gross feeders and their feeder roots are close to the surface but too much rain usually splits or rots the fruit. It is on hot days with little available moisture that they drop green fruit.

Yes but the potash needs to be in the soil before the bean fly come.
I’ve always prior feed the spots I plan to plant beans and peas with ashes from the stove.
your soil had a pH of 11 – does it need highly alkaline wood ash?

It is all a matter of a fine balance.
The soil indeed does not need any more alkali but it definitely lacks sufficient potash.

Yes, since I was a child, “turning the heel” was the apex of knitting…never knew anyone who could, tho’…not much call for knitted socks up here but Ragamuffin acquired a few pairs at Portland, Heywood and Warrnambool when she was down there and they look so very comfortable…

how long does a pair of socks take to be knitted?

In this book I’m reading, you can take out the worn-out heels and the toes of the socks you have knitted, and insert replacements. A bit like Great Granny’s axe: 3 heads and 9 handles and still going strong…

my oranges are splitting before they ripen and the limes are dropping. can’t always be to do with water – there must be other factors as well.
my beans didn’t produce a bean all throughout summer, now they are and the ground is drier, the watering routine the same. also my zuchs (white and black types) are now producing after a summer of doing nought. my late season roma toms browned off again but are shooting from the base.

“Splits probably occur when water and sugars are transported from the roots of the tree to the ripening fruit, and the rind is unable to expand
quickly enough to accommodate the added volume. The rind bursts open under the pressure”
that perfectly explains the splitting on my navels.

Here in Penshurst where the citrus are planted beside the greywater gravel pit, the lemons have been pretty continuous (that tree is about 8 years old now), the lime is setting lots of fruit, some almost to pickatgreen stage (that tree is about 4 years old) and the orange tree is making leaves. It’s only been in for two years and is yet to bear.
In Casterton where there has been minimal watering – I bucket a couple of buckets to each tree at very irregular intervals of a week to three weeks – the orange tree (1999) has oranges on it that are useable but small, the lime is just starting to set something (about 2 years) and the tangelo (about 5 years) has three or four good looking fruit and more flowers starting. The mandarin (about 3 years and very exposed) is going for leaf growth at the moment. But there has been virtually no rain there for 6 months, so I’m glad to have something. When the weather does break, I expect them to shoot away frantically.

Mulch with good compost is the answer for minimal watering situations. Top it with lucerne hay.

Morning. I’m still here, just quiet.. still looking after Max and the twice daily pill routine. He knows those pills are in that food and manages to eat the food but spit the pill out intact. He doesn’t trust cheese anymore, nor vegemite toast, lol, so I resorted to cooking some meats and hiding them in that. If I put them down his throat he coughs and chokes and still the pill comes back up. A favourite is chicken skin and cubes from chicken kebabs. So far so good. His head is still tilted and his eyes are still darting about. Next vet appointment tomorrow for the test results.
Hubby isn’t working much atm, so in the meantime we are getting some outside jobs done. The biggest job was getting two of the big rocks set into the part up the side to the meters. Well, fun and games..how do two people move a half ton rocks..with a lot of difficulty I can tell you. Even getting it a few inches along took ages. Until the man had the bright idea of shoving an old skateboard under it and rolling it. Well he levered it up and I piffed the skateboard under it. Success. Except it is too heavy to stop and doesn’t come with a brake! lol..result: I have a very sore skun and swollen ankle and he has a cut and bruised finger. We helped each other inside to dress our wounds and have a rest. We got the two rocks in though! Only another four to go LOL.

Yes they did and that was all fine. Apparently inner ear infections can take weeks to heal. The lab tests will tell us more about what type of bug it is, and if there’s any tumour cells present.
He is quite sprightly, not in pain and happy enough, just walks with a strange wobbling gait and his head is on the side.
He won’t push a door open though if I’m in another room and leave the door slightly ajar. He would previously charge through it. Instead he just sits there and cries.

Yes and with the floppy ear thing they are prone to ear problems. I’ve got a vast array of ear preparations taking up half my side of the medicine cupboard. And, as far as cocker spaniels go, Max has a broader head than usual, making those ear canals even deeper and his canal walls are thickened and narrow. He will be having checks more often.

Saffron’s up and blooming :)
Except…I discovered bloody snails had eaten 3 of the blooms. They actually ate out the red threads but left the purple petals, rotten mongrel things. I’ve got a rainbow of colours of snail pellets about the bed..not too thickly.
Moving the rocks about yesty and cleaning out the dead pumpkin vines, I turned over a lot of smaller rocks laying about the front garden and squished hundreds of snails. I sprinkled the whole area with snail bait.

My late aunty had cocker spaniels, black and white, and liver and white…One of them developed canker in the ears and we used to have to put oil (prescribed by vet) into the ear for the poor thing…they told us it was cos the cocker spaniels have very deep ears that you can’t really get in to to clean…Max is in good hands by the sound of it…
Yes and with the floppy ear thing they are prone to ear problems. I’ve got a vast array of ear preparations taking up half my side of the medicine cupboard. And, as far as cocker spaniels go, Max has a broader head than usual, making those ear canals even deeper and his canal walls are thickened and narrow. He will be having checks more often.

Oh he would love that. The ravens and magpies here know that this backyard is a danger area so they only hang about out the front.
They’re too quick for Max anyway though, most of his catches are the slow and fat wood doves.

All he has to do is chase them! Shadow is not interested in chasing birds…still gives token snaps at the rear ends of The Chicks when they can’t resist temptation and jump on his back…the galahs and silver choughs and such clean up the leftover grains undisturbed…

Hello Gardeners. So here is What I Did Today. Your task is to pick out the bit that wasn’t planned….
Leave home at 7.00am to take car to Warrnambool (70km) for a service. Walk from mechanic’s in to town 3km, buy some Glad Wrap (I can’t get the mini Glad Wrap in Hamilton), order the meat for Mr buffy’s birthday bash in a couple of weeks, walk back to mechanic’s. Car ready. (190,000km…It said 189999 as I pulled in, I think I should have driven around the block before driving in the driveway).
Go out to Allansford, stopping on the way for material and elastic at Spotlight (haven’t got one of them in Hamilton either). Buy butter and real cream and a brilliant milkshake. Drive back through Warrrnambool and head home.
Hit pothole just North of Koroit, swear, look in rear vision mirror and see wheel cover careering across the road. U-turn, chuck Mr buffy out to pick up wheel cover and U-turn again. Get out of car at Mr buffy’s suggestion to look at buckled wheel and flat tyre. Pull slowly around the corner onto dead end side gravel road and assist Mr buffy to change tyre.
Drive home, nervously eyeing off the potholes. Hamilton tyre place has the right tyres in stock. Arrange to take car in at 2.30 for two new tyres and a verdict on the wheel rim. Go for a coffee. Go to Hamilton, nice man says rim is redeemable, sit in waiting room while tyres done. Now have two new front tyres, two good back tyres (yes, they had been rotated front to back at the servicing) and a good spare. On a rim pushed back into shape.
Continue on to Casterton and assess ferocity of European wasps in nest I have been trying to kill off. Wasps still around, not aggressive. Decide it’s not quite dusk enough yet and go and do shrub and tree pruning for a while. Go back and feed wasps with assorted poisons.
Drive home.
Total km about 370 for the day.
I think I’ll go to work tomorrow, for a bit of variety.

You make our furniture moving and flatpak construction sound like chicken feed. We still collapsed at the end of the day though.

Our Vet told us that a cockers ear canal runs down then turns at a right angle so very hard to cure an infection etc. Our dog had to have an operation on both ears where they opened up that whole canal to the right angle and left it open for ever. It certainly cured the dogs canker problems but it wasn’t cheap to have done.

Good morning Gardeners. Back to work today. I’ll just be careful what I drive through on the way….
We found butter is the best for getting pills into Boxers, might work for other dogs. They adore the stuff. So you wrap the pill in butter…but don’t immediately give that bit to them. Cut off a couple of other cubes. Give one cube. Yum!! Make a fuss how lovely it is!!! Give another (might be the pill one, might not). Yumm!! Then give the pill one, if you haven’t slipped it in already, because they are gobbling by now, immediately followed by another one so they gulp and grab the next one.
Works for us. Boxers loooooove their butter. And so does the new Pug.

doesn’t it stick to the roof of their mouths?
I think the key is having a number of pieces so that they gulp the pill one down so as not to miss out on the next one, as buffy said.

Hahahaha! Peanut butter and dogs is a party routine, as Ragamuffin found out with her kelpie. A friend told her about it and Ragamuffin sat around for 10 mins crying while she laughed whilst her kelpie tried to get the peanut butter off the roof of her mouth…this is a dog, you drop the tablet on the floor and she pounces on it, eats it, and looks for more…
Our local vet will insert the tablet for free, if you can’t do it…

Back from Max’s vet appointment, culture came back as the bacterium they that suspected it was and he’s just got to stay on the same tablets, one slow acting and another faster acting antibiotic, and the cortisone tabs. It’s just going to take time but he is improving slowly. The biopsy will take a few days longer.
No dramas with giving him his pills this morning, wrapped in a bit of warmed up roast lamb.
It’s a gorgeous day. I noticed as I drove out the driveway that many saffron flowers have opened. I’ve picked them now and pinched out the threads. It’s a pity to waste those pretty purple flowers so I’ve floated them in a small bowl for the table. Pic when I upload it.

went to Euroa Arboretum today with the gardening group. here they propagate local native species and sell to organisations like Landcare or farms or to the general public. They grow about 45,000 plants a year. The property itself was donated after being used as a storage area and quarry for when the Hume Freeway was being built. Apart from a handful of lovely old Eucalypts there wasn’t much there. Gradually over the years plantings and natural regrowth is turning it into a lovely open woodland. To start with natives from all over Australia were planted but now they concentrate on local species, some getting quite rare with only a half dozen or so stands in the local Strathbogie Ranges. A shallow drain and pit created during the road building process is now a creek, ponds and dam which provides the water to grow the seedlings. Another area that has been a problem to manage because it is constantly wet they are sculpting into a wetland area for water birds. The dam is too deep to encourage these sort of birds where the new wetlands will be shallow and more ephemeral.
Here is a local that came to check out the fare while we were having a cuppa.

RealLife™ does eat into our internet time but it does seem that either facebook, mobile phones or something has been drawing people away from chat forums.
Then there are other worrying questions like haven’t heard from PM. So was he the Australian that was shot in PNG?, did his plane fall out of the sky or will he just waltz in with a new set of photos any moment?

Ok, I’ve been in touch with him over fb (facebook) and he is alive! Very very busy…too young to be the unfortunate Oz that was shot, by the way…
You’re right, I never thought of it that way, that fb and similar are drawing folk away from the fora…haven’t “met” anybody new since…since the other gardening forum was shut down…I notice Hardacre (my nickname for him) is being kept on a tight leash on the new forum…no creating other persona so he can stir an argument…he did it over on ScribblyGum as well…
I used to TheE’s gardening forum and made a real life friend over there…. haven’t contributed to the Gardening Express forum for years…Did you ever find out where the Tech Talk forum re-opened, and what as?

Though I’m wondering where everybody else on the internet went. I am aware that RealLife™ does eat into our internet time but it does seem that either facebook, mobile phones or something has been drawing people away from chat forums.
Who was hardacre in scribbly?
I only visit a small handful of forums.

Hiyas, I’m still here, ain’t died yet. When I do I’ll let yous know first, lol.
Max is not getting better and the vet rang back last night to tell me why, because the bug he has is resistant to the antibiotics he is on. Today I have to pick up new tablets and ear drops to match, hitting the bug from both sides. This is dragging on too long and the poor thing just sleeps a lot. If these new meds don’t work then it’s surgery, but that’s a last option. It’s also getting very expensive too, over our heads, and I’ve started selling whatever I can to help pay vet bills, baking cakes and whatnot. Got my black iphone four for sale too, 32 gb, unlocked, mint condition charger box and everything, works perfectly and no scratches, $300. Just in case you know someone looking for one.
As Max sleeps on a pillow nearby, I’ve been rinsing and shovelling river stones into the ap grow beds. Bluddy hard work.

I actually enjoy it. I’ve gotten around the heavy lifting by using brains in place of brawn, but have to sift through this pile of stones carefully as it’s full of crap so it’s very time consuming. At some stage paint was spilt or tipped on it from where it lay for years and I’ve had to pick them out. Using the karcher didn’t work, it blasted the stones into smaller pieces. Finding bottle caps and can ring pulls, but found one treasure too. It’s a vintage aviation tie slide, no identifying marks on it, but silver and the plane on it is a single engine propeller thing, it’s nice. I’m guessing it’s from the 1940s or thereabouts. The fellas house I got the stones from said it’s not his.

I picked up Max’s new tablets ear drops and ear cleaner, told them to swipe the card and not tell me how much least I faint, rushed home and got a tablet into him, he’s very listless, ear washed out and put the drops in 30 mins later. The actual dropper in the bottle is heaps better and I was able to get exactly 10 drops right in deep.
Fingers crossed this works. He is eating and drinking, thank goodness.
Busy arvo, baked a large blue cake, it’s very, very blue. I made white mud and coloured it, ‘very blue’ the order’er said. I had to go to a speciality cake supplies place to get the blue gel colour. I’m glad I’m not eating it.
Made another choc mud cake for tomorrow’s vege swap 2 year anniversary meet. Plus I will make a nice saffron risotto and taking it in a thermal soup carry pot. I’ve got a large tray of snags to throw on the bbq there. And we have the larger area back after the community centres kitchen/dining area expansion, with 2 nice big tables and better seating. Apart from celebrating, I have loads of eggplants to take, rhubarb and jars of jam and marmalade.

Hello Gardeners. I’ve been busy at work. Tomorrow is Buddleia Massacre Day here in Casterton. I am presently sitting watching Escape to the Country by a lovely open fire. First one for the season and more for ambiance than anything.
I’ve had to flush Babuschka’s ears lately, just because she has grotty ears and shakes her head. Periodically she gets ear mites. But I just get to use sterile water or saline, she’s got big ears, you squirt it in, push the earflap down quickly and squish a bit and catch the muck on the way out. Then she gets a squirt of ear drops down there. Seems to be working. I’ve never done the washing out before and she is not enamoured of the idea, but if it stops the shaking it’s worth it. Not as bad as what Max seems to have.

Miss my fireplace…
I just use the towels I dry the dogs with, they’re thin and easy to get into the ears…get the worst of the muck out with that…Puta (border collie / cattle dog) gets drefful dirty ears but Manu (Kelpie) is not so bad…Shadow (Labrador) is good, … I’m very careful when I bathe the dogs but mutts are like kids, no matter what you do they’ll go and trash themselves…

Good morning Gardeners. We have our first frost of the season here in Casterton.
I’ll be off out with the loppers any minute to start on the buddleia. I don’t want to get too much of it done before Mr buffy gets here because I forgot to bring the camera for the “before” shot and he is bringing it with him. Doesn’t mean I can’t start on the smaller bits though.

Morning. Hectic morning here, a flurry of activity getting ready for the vege swap anniversary celebrations.
Scrummaged through the carpeted shed for the big picnic basket for the plates napkins and utensils. And the big cake carry all. Then grab the esky for the snags, start chopping ingredients for the risotto, go swipe a celery stalk and some spring onions out of the ground. And then I noticed the eggplant jungle. How am I going to get in there? I’ve neglected it and it’s grown humongous, completely obscuring the path and purple fruits galore. I know, send JJ in, here son here’s a bag and secateurs, got a job for you, hehe. He did it too :)
Grabbed the dog, pills straight in the throat and hold the snout shut, then drops in ears, no cuddle this morn my fluffy one, I’m in a hurry.
Now to get dressed so I can go out the front and pick rhubarb. Oh what the heck, half the town knows I spend my mornings in my nightie and brunch coat :D

And here is the ‘after’. You will note that we got too hot in the sun before all the branches went through the chipper. And I whacked my head on the trailer. And Mr buffy fell over a hole (that has been there for years) and we sort of both lost our oomph at a bit after 12noon.

Morning. That was cute, google changing seasons thing. Mesmerising even.
I’ve had a morning nanna nap, well some catch up sleep. I took hubby into the city at 5.30 to drop him off for a day procedure, then back home to bed. He will be fine. I pick him up later or in the morning depending on how he is. He’d waited to get a minor procedure done when work was at it’s quietest. The traffic was hell, even that that horrible hour. I couldn’t move across the freeway to take the off-ramp I wanted to so took a different route.
I was expecting Max to be a bit better by now, however he’s not :( This is not looking good. I’m back at the vet with him this Friday, but I’m really worried might ring them today anyway. It’s starting to feel like he will never be better.
Cake decorating bits and pieces to make today, fun with fondant.

You’re doing your best for Max and I’m sure he knows this…you have a marvellous vet by the sounds of it…
You can have your fondant, I am almost finished a pillowslip that’s going to replace my “old friend”, as Mrs B next door put it…
Still having arguments with the crows, they stole a fake egg yesterday ($3) so I’m going to have to buy more…apparently my hens can tell the difference between a golf ball and an egg…

Don’t know how much rain we had. Listening to the CFA scheds this morning it could have been anywhere between a couple of mm and 9mm. Don’t think it was 9 though. But there is some dampness, and I’ve taken the opportunity to plant out some cabbagey seedlings. I have replacements in the polystyrene box for the ones that cark it.
Also made bolognese sauce (for making lasagne), and monkey faces, yo-yos and afghan biscuits. Have to put the monkey faces and yo-yos together yet, and ice the afghans, but I’ll have a rest first.

if you have mustard in a squeeze bottle – then poke two holes in an egg – one at the blunt end, one at the sharp end – and squeeze mustard in.
put the egg in the nest – and wait for the crow to steal it and never return

at a farmers market yesterday we got some beautiful blue cheese – from ‘udder delights’ – worth a try if its available where you are.
some bloke was selling both pigeon poo and comfrey tea in 1 litre plastic bottles for $6. he reckons comfrey is a real good activator of life in the soil.
he also says to bury comfrey leaves around the dripline of your citrus.

Comfrey is a very old compost starter. I also just lay the leaves on the ground around the veggie patch as a mulch. It grows like a weed and is now confined to a big pot here. I think it’s for potassium, but I’d have to look it up.

it is hard to get rid of and consequently I have four patches of it. I have used it in the compost and will try these other methods.
if its a soil life activator it probably just frees up a lot of locked in minerals.

I think also because it has deep roots it reaches nutrients not available to most veges, transporting them to the leaves and then from there to your soil where other plants can get the benefit of it.

Yes, plus if chooks can get at it they self medicate on it. It may be a big clump but it doesn’t self seed as far as I’ve been told, and it dies off every winter. I have 2 clumps of it and just lay the leaves like mulch around the fruit trees. Chooks dig it in.

Justin you’re a gem, thanks for explaining that…
The stolen egg turned up, the chooks found it in the shredded paper of the nest, so the golf ball has gone back to duties in the nest the chooks have never nested in…
7 eggs out of a possible 9, two hens are laying elsewhere…even old Marion Mary laid an egg in the designated nest yesterday…

A short visit but we talked and talked and talked and reminisced about our childhood days and the issues we faced in home and school, and marriage etc. Very therapeutic it was. I don’t get to see her often as she lives in the Blue Mountains and neither of us have much money so visits either way are few and far between. She is thinking of trying to come down again in August when the Bald Archy’s are on and will try and drag her hubby down as well.

>>quiet here this morning<<
My excuse is that I went for my half hour bike ride and then went to Warrnambool for dog training. Then when we got back there has been cleaning, tidying, cleaning, tidying, moving of furnitures, cleaning, rearranging furnitures……and did I mention tidying? A bit more to do tomorrow and then I might relax. We had shoved furniture all around the house to make room for 15 people to sit down to tables in our biggest room. And of course, putting things all back to normal turned into changing things……
:)
Done now. Leftover lasagne and trifle for tea tonight.

last day of school holidays so the some teachers come around here for ‘the last supper’.
ms j. made her own puff pastry for a vege pie – my lemon verbena sorbet with icecream for dessert.
quiet in the house now.
more rain last night and this morning. great mobs of short-billed corellas screaming in the valley skies not far from here.
did I mention it was a quite as a mouse here now.
…and speaking of mice … those live mouse traps that BG showed here do actually work. I think mice like the tunnel look.
much todo… cyas L8r.

not much happening here. my back is sore today and had to take some pain meds so I am taking it easy.
Glad you found those traps useful justin :)
Usually they only catch one at a time but I caught two once! They must have entered at the same time. I am thinking of getting another one for out in the garage as there is always some scurrying going on there when I go in.

rest the back – and well done on catching two in the same trap.
it wasn’t the big green shed that stocked those traps but a place we call ‘Hong Kong Joes’. the wife managed to disappear while I was looking for a drill bit.
I looked everywhere for her and finally ended up doing Sudoku in the car waiting. she had gone looking for a trellis and found an entirely different big shed full of stuff out the back.
so half an hour later she reappears with her mousetrap trophy – no trellis.

Hello Gardeners. I’ve done some shed tidying. And some front room tidying (more to happen there, it’s got my sewing stuff in it and that is definitely in need of sorting out) And been for coffee twice. The second time was to deliver some lemons to the cafe so they can serve their lemon syrup cake later in the week. I need to make the bed and then lie down to read some journals. If I don’t waylay myself back into the library/sewing room.
A couple of hours ago the dogs were enjoying the sun. Long likes to sit with his Auntie.

Usually Long runs towards you when you get the camera out. So I started snapping from a distance. But he was just on the edge of collapsing into sleep, so I got close and got quite a good photo.

Ergh, stop the planet I want off. Or at least stop it spinning lol. Ya don’t wanna know, believe me. Just busy, drama, busy, then 3 dramas, ect. ect., as it usually goes here. Some snippets. The mans been back to hospital with more complications, twice by ambulance and once taken there. He’s finally coming good now.
Still protecting Giant Son from feral parasite freeloaders. Oh the dramas. JJ even went to stay with him for a few days as a bodyguard. It worked, JJ is scary looking. (really a wuss lol)
But Max isn’t any better, but one more week on the hellishly exxy tablets and we will make a decision about surgery. His head still way tilted, walks about with his tongue hanging out low, nearly trips over his ear. He doesn’t know which way is up or down and stumbles about. He gets frustrated when he can’t catch a feral bird for the daily kill routine. I caught one easily one day with the net and handed it to him. He lunged at it, in one chomp, dead. Visiting females went running. They don’t understand what I’d do for my fluffy first friend.
But, I did manage to get some gardening time in between dramas and planted leeks where I pulled pumpkins out, out the front, and planted out a polystyrene box of belladonna lilies. They should make a nice show.
Got one bed of the ap system half full of washed pebbles. It’s slow going.
Still picking saffron whenever I come back from being out, dashing over to the purple flowers and bring them inside for red threads picking.
And a miracle! the feral neighbour hasn’t been over to ask to borrow the trailer! Wonders will never cease.
But it might be because I’ve hidden it up against the carport /patio colourbond wall and loaded it with those big recycled shade cloth pieces. I was given some more and didn’t know where to store it. The trailer will do for now.
Back at it. Brekky and a coffee then I have to head off to an appointment for me.
ps, love the pics Justin, and as always, RB’s gardening advice about all things mysterious and alien to most of us. Well me anyway lol.

Wot? There’s a worse speller-er than me?
The saffron is bloody beautiful. No bitterness even when I deliberately used too much. It’s smooth and leaves no undesirable bitter aftertaste.

Oh HP! (((HUGS))) for you and yours.
Glad the man is finally coming good. What a mess for what was supposed to be a simple procedure! I have been wondering how GS has been getting along, well now I know. Many points to JJ for being his brother’s keeper. And poor Max! He must be wondering what the hell is gone wrong with his world :(
If you are ever thinking of some time out, I know a little place in the country….. :)

With trailer full of goodies, and tarps. Only my car doesn’t have a tow ball, would have to slug it out in the mans noisy rattler bomb. Still, it’s a can do :)
btw, I’d like to see anyone try and nick the trailer now. It’s locked down with a tow ball lock, wheel clamp and is bolted to the carport strut.
