Subject: Car struts

Some may remember the issue I had with my car. Well I finally had it looked at and the damage is high. They want to replace the front and rear struts ($622 and $351). Add on the front brakes and ball joints and it’s going to be $1,500… to repair my 2000 Pulsar which is probably worth $3,000.

Can someone tell me if this is actually likely to be the cause of a random clunk (that I can feel more than hear) sometimes when I turn corners and how urgent it is for a car I use once a week to get to the airport and back?

go to another mechanic for a second opinion. it could be bushes or CVJ. if you have BU contact ask him.

Have you been to more than one mechanic?

If your car is overall very good and this repair at half its value will carry it forward for another 5 years it would be worth it. But if it has been indifferently maintained and other things are likely to go it might be worthwhile making sure the clunk is not life threatening and just drive it into the ground.

Having said that I guess it boils down to is your three thousand dollar car more reliable and better than other three thousand dollar cars without clunks?

Yeah, I was thinking a second opinion would be good, but flew back to site before I arranged one. I told them that I had the same symptoms before my CVJ were replaced a few years ago so I expect they would have picked it up if that were the case. Not sure I still have BU’s contact details but I’ll check.

I’ve been planning to run the car into the ground for some time actually. Since this problem is only noticeable sometimes I was thinking now I might sell it and get a car that’s cheaper to run, like an early 2000s Getz. But if this problem is just going to mean brake pads and tires wear quicker, I may continue to run it into the ground for a few years.

it makes me wonder of you could make a small suction device to suck crap out of the lungs

you’d need s fibreoptic cable leading to a lens, a small wire could supply power to a small led at the head where the lens

the fibre optic would sit on a small tube that could be slid down by your own hand being guided by an image on a tv screen, it could be small enough to not provoke the gag reflex

you’d carefully feed it down into the lung or wherever and hoover out the flem

if you were especially tricky you could take the antibiotic given to by the dr and squirt this stuff into the lung after you hoovered out the junk

Front wheel drive?

Have pulsars ever been other than front wheel drive? If it were me, I’d just do the driveshafts (CVJ) and then wait and see if any other problems happen.

Yep, and it’s been like that for about 4-5 months now with no change.

Honestly, in a 13yo junker, I’m not sure I would be spending anything on an occasional clunk unless I thought it was going to strand me or kill me.

My guess is that the repair should be less than $100.

Sounds like they are replacing all the potential sources of the noise. And they also think you may need new ball joints, struts and brakes.

I’d be letting them know the job won’t be done to the quote as it is, and see how it goes from there.

You can always shop around for the parts and just get them fitted.

Ball joints and brakes are pretty important.
(i’ve had a ball joint let go on me halfway around a roundabout once, interesting ride. when i removed the ball, it was the shape of kryton from red dwarf’s head… but that was .in a 25 year old car, ball joints usually take a decent amount of time to wear unless other issues are present.
worn struts, imo, would give off more than an occasional clunk, can you seeif they look like they have leaked?

BU has offered to take a look at let me know if the mechanics are just blowing smoke up my arse. But I couldn’t see an obvious issue when I looked around a few months ago. Although, at that point I thought it was the CV joints.
