seedlings are looking terrific since i dug them out of the weeds.
last night i thinned and transplanted radichio, lettuce, english spinach.
looking good – and this warm weather is most welcome – as will be the rain when it comes.
lucky’s wormjuice and seaweed liquid tea are being used to accelerate growth as much as possible.

rain started on one of the last days of april – and i’ve had 90mm since it started.
i couldn’t plant until it rained and then, of course, all the weeds boomed out of the soil, and i’ve spent the last 3 weeks hand weeding and hoeing.

I bought a punnett of carrots and planted them out last night. my first time planting carrot seedlings and they are very different. the seedlings carrots are little ball carrots (like a cherry tomato) and they have got an extensive root system instead of the single taproot.

I grew some like that from seed once, they were very nice but you needed more of them for a meal than the normal long ones.

they look alright – rain predicted – should help.
what oc40 says about them not producing as much bulk per sq.m.as the taprooted ones has the ring of truth about it.

happy queens birthday to you all
i spent the day in the garden – we had 10mm of rain overnight and today was cool.
chooks have moved into the summer garden bed and the onions have been fenced off to allow them to mature.
i have forked over the fenced garden the chooks have just left – and i will add sand and compost and plant a geen manure crop there in prep for spud planting in august.

got my barley green manure crop in.
forked the ground over and noticed the clay was still clumpy despite the presence of sand and humus from previous attempts at soil conditioning. also noticed that weevils and crickets live in clay caves underground. so i’ve spread another trailer load of sand and one of mushroom compost.
barley seed were broadcast and then the soil was raked two ways like you do for planting lawn seed.
once i’ve forked the barley in and after adding cow manure and mineral mix, i’ll plant spuds, i’ll put about 400mm of pine needles and straw over the spuds.
hopefully, when the spuds are out, this will be good soil.

it avoids feeding if you plant out the land they leave behind immediately.
my current winter patch is outside of the rotational system and it took me 3 weeks to hand weed it.

I’m not sure which of the recipe’s I’m going to make, it’s a drag to decide atm lol.

The chook’s look awful , moulting and all dishevelled , a couple have no tail feather’s and look silly ! Averaging one egg a day, I have had to buy a dozen and boy that hurt !

spoggies had eaten my first planting of barley – so this time i have covered two rectangular areas with birdnetting.
in the areas without birdnetting i have planted mustard and bok choy in rows and buried them properly (the barley is broadcast and raked).
i have planted green feast peas in one area and placed flywire screens over. for those who want to know – its pea planting time here in sa.

Wonderful words Pepe. That means the days will start getting longer again. The weather will eventually be returning to warm days. I can put my jumpers away and take the elec blanket off the bed. Thank goodness!

Apologies to Lucky1.

Even though the daylight periods will be getting longer, it will get colder before it starts getting warmer again.
