Lucky I didn’t blanch the celery as I was told to lol..instead I planted cauli’s and red cabbage’s close by and they have grown hard up against the celery. The stem’s are quite light in colour and are tender. I used a whole bunch of celery in 2 big boiler’s of bolognaise sauce ( packed in 1 lt container’s and all in a freezer) and it’s really yum.
So far frost’s haven’t bothered it at all :D

plant them in a row about 150mm apart or a double row similarly spaced – that is plant them in a compact row or clump.
when they are say 300mm high surround the clump with timber or bricks. you have to remove the boards or bricks to pick so i prefer bricks (laid loose).
those seedlings should be planted up to their necks in soil – so bury the bit of stem thats now showing.
coriander? – what mug said that?LOL

yep – bok choy as well
sometime between 4 – 8 weeks little flower spikes appear.
IMHO that means it has to grow to about 20cm high in 6 weeks and then it gets chopped off holless bolless. its hard to eat it all when there’s thirty plants and two eaters.

Thanks cackles:)

I’m going to move a lot of the soil around the parsley plant. I guess you can transplant them as soon as it’s got a couple of “proper” leaves. Just take as much soil as you can with the seedling, to help stop root disturbance.

This is what I am doing.

I’ll post a photo in a second of my size parsley…….

Grabs camera and coin to show size….

I have 3 confirmed parsley seedlings. I have used a 10 cent coin to show the sizes of them.

Going to use a good size scooper to lift as much soil as I can, to minimize soil movement and root shock.

Back a few years ago, I had self sown parsley go feral in an area I didn’t even water. Over near a climbing rose on the opposite side fence where the vegie patch is.

For people who have been here….between the old car and fence.

Bluddy stuff grew everywhere…….amazingly feral…..

Now where I let them go to seed and want heaps of free seedlings….. I get 3 maybe 5 if I am lucky…..LOL

Never work with animals, kids or parsley self sown seeds.;)

Isn’t parsley the one that you’re supposed to be evil to be able to grow? I put some in a pot and the stuff wouldn’t die. Think it grew for about 3 years, unwatered and unloved; until the mock orange grew up and completely covered the pot. Every plant I’ve had since then has curled up its toes and died. Maybe I’m a reformed character?

Thanks, Lucky :) This the first year I’ve been able to get any to germinate! I like to have plenty around and usually buy a couple of punnets a year. Makes nice borders and one year I even juiced some. Because I usually have a lot of sugar cane mulch around and basically no dig gardens, I don’t get many self-sown seedlings. This year however I’ve, so far, not bought cane mulch and am using mainly wood chip from the tree-lopper 2 doors down. That works better for the duck runs and is breaking down nicely. Wherever I’ve dug there are weeds! – including a couple of bad patches of onion weed that I need to address one day. I want to get back to a more cottagey garden with some flowering annuals that will self seed eg cosmos

Yes. On Tuesday it was raining here, we were up north visiting family. Came home to a wet homestead. Also last week we had 16 mm of rain.

Lot of wet days coming up over the next 7 days. Hoping to get everything finished tomorrow, before the rain comes in. One day we are having a high temp of 14 with rain.

Or so they said last night on the TV.

Why do you lurv the temps? Are they warm or cold? Seem bluddy cold to me!

Lucky1 I see that rain is ahead for you. Are you on water restrictions and does the recent rain fall in the water catchment? In the Top End we have plenty of water but with the changes that are happening who knows what the future may hold.

Not allowed to water lawns with hoses…… only 1 day a week with a hose for 3 hours in slotted times. Odd….. even system.

Can use buckets. Only wash a car with a bucket, no hose.

Once the bin was emptied I started to add to it with poultry litter from the hen house. As well their shredded paper from nest boxes. Raked up the composting area of any spillages and this was added to the new compost pile I’m making.
—————————————
does this compost pile end up in the tumbler?
i really love to see good soil being built up – and you’re doing just that – lovely.
…. and i hope you get heaps of rain.

Yes it does Pepe.

I start my compost piles up ….by adding to it and storing it in the black compost bin on the soil.

Once the tumbler is finished with and emptied, what is in the black bin goes into the tumbler and I start all over again.

Stuff (love that word…means so many things) can be added to the tumbler….but when its full…that is when most people will really start to use it………. to break down the “stuff”.

Me I like to start the tumbler up with new “stuff” all in 1 hit….hence the way I do it.

After brekkie….

I want to achieve in my garden today……

The area allocated for carrots turned over and check out when to sow carrots by the moon. Will be my first sowing of my own seeds I have saved.

Harvest more rocket, lettuces, spinach, carrots & spring onions.

Sort out or start to sort out the area for green manure.

Trip to toyshop later this morning. Need some gypsum and B&B.

Today is so important to me… as 14 years ago today the elf & I left our kids with friends back in Whyalla and we came to Luckyland as my mum was dieing. That was a Monday and she died on the Friday.

I was scratching my skin so much last night (made it bleed in places) until I remembered what today meant. I hate the dates for the next few days.:(

So a day out playing in the garden will do me so much good and help me to get through the day. Couldn’t have picked a better time for a day out planting new life:D

Don’t be so hard on yourself deary. Remembering the funny things they did helps the pain enourmously.
It saves one skin. I know from experience.

I laugh when I remember some of the whacky things my mum did..her first time trying to work out how to use a microwave oven is an absolute crack up. The anniversary of her death was also her birthday.

Oh sweet:) Let me know how they germinate.

Elf asked me about spuds as well and I said not quite yet….. 2 weeks ya reckon.

Another full day out the back, depending how the rain goes. Had a couple of showers over night.

Going to take a rooster (Aspro’s twin) out to my poultry food supply…do a trade. Pick up some straw for mulching and a bag of food while there.

Going to Garden Grove…for seed potatoes as the toy shop was out of them.

Just a quick note…..

Planning and working out what a gardener wants to grow either short term or long term….its worth taking one’s time and not jumping in blind. What we are now doing with the fruit trees has been on the white board for 2 years now. Though we had been talking on and off about it before then.

It seems such a long time since we started all of this, but now its happening…its just so worth the wait.

Lucky, re the apples, did you see the columnar ones ? I have 5 of them planted in a half a metre apart in a 3 mt wide strip on the west side of a garden shed , if it wasn’t for a bloody air conditioner sticking out of that side of the shed, I would have room for a sixth. I have 2 additional dwarf apple trees planted in one hole across the way from them as well. As the columnar ones can get to 3.5 mt high , I want to shade that side of the shed. I love the idea of food trees providing shade where it’s sorely needed :D

Have a look next time then , they are great for narrow spaces , don’t need pruning , apart from the occasional branch that may grow out a tad, you just cut them back to 100 mm from the trunk , and they can bear quite heavy crops. Maximum fruit growing here in a very small yard. The whole mini orchard area is small, 3.5 mt deep by 5.6 mt wide and so far has 11 fruit trees, including citrus, stone fruit and apples and theres room for about 4 more. I hope to get a cherry 3 way multi graft soon, and a white nectarine. Yum!
I will be installing a watering system later on too when time permits , not sure which one yet. Earwigs here clog drippers big time , so it has to be something else, and underground.

I’ll have a look next time we are in the nursery. Pretty sure we won’t be buying more apple trees though. Still need an apricot, pear and of course the 2 citrus trees.

One of the apple trees we bought today is a mini tree…..a short people starting with “D”

Off now to muck out the duck shed for compost….

Exactly like that.

The political party in Australia however, spell it “Labor Party”. This is possibly due to the uneducated or LESS educated origins of its members…

actually it is a matter of fact that the pollies in the Labor Party are on the whole better educated and better read than those in the Liberal Party.

apparently it started out as the Labour Party, but in 1912 it was changed to Labor by King O’Malley (Cabinet Minister) to “modernise” it, with the added advantage of distinguishing it from other labour movements.

I still need to finish off the raspberry area. But I go the main part of the job done yesterday.

Very sad area there at the moment. Due to the record breaking heat wave and some bad house keeping on my side.

Plans and photos of this area on my blog.

If you can help me in what I want to do the raspberry area, please let me know.

you never know what will come up with some TLC. Something to “cool” the tin fence sounds like a good idea. Even some old shadecloth would help.

We have some wood sides from an old wardrobe and was thinking of maybe using that. We’ll see when the time comes.

east facing and out of the wind that area.
you could put sunflowers in whilst you wait.
most veges will grow in that area – beans, sweet potato, cueys, will all climb up the trellis.
i’m not sure where your espaliered fruit trees are now?
even tomato, eggplant and capsicum would grow there – with basil in between.
just suggestions – and not rude ones either lol.
