Subject: advice about painting (canvas)

I want to put tape in a certain pattern on a canvas, paint it and take the tape off. it has a name I forget.
but the shape I want is all curves so tape isn’t going to work.
I was thinking maybe white glue (used to love peeling it off my hands).
any suggestions?
thanks

sheet of glass. stick tape to it gently. put multiple strips so you have a “solid”, cross hatch to give strength. cut to shape. peel off glass. stick to canvas.

What about cutting the shape out of a piece of clear acetate and sticking that onto the canvas…?

Boris’s idea sounds practical, but will require careful handling. I can’t think of anything better.

I don’t understand the glass thing Borrie.
Bady Wady, do I glue it on?
You can use old xrays yes?

Masking fluid?

Paint it on.
Let it dry.
Paint over it.
Rub it off.
(But don’t leave it too long!)

Also wash out your brush with soap immediately after use (and don’t use a good brush anyway)

you use masking tape. the glass is so that you can stick the masking tape to it and it is easy to peel off. you don’t want to cut the tape on the canvas.

masking fluid could soak into the fibre of the canvas and be hard to remove. it is usually used to paint windows and is painted on the glass to make the frames quicker to paint.

The old rubber cement would be good. Don’t know if you can get it now.

It may be, but it’s also sold in art shops. I don’t know how well it works on canvas, I’ve always used it on paper.

OK.

So paint the base colour, that of the sqiggedly lines, first. Then paint the masking fluid in the shape desired and then paint the wash over it.

Opaque inks might help…

Now Bobs your Aunty Jeny.

It would probably be best if I primed the canvas first. (yes?)
I think it already is but will check

If you bought it as a ready-stretched canvas, it may well already be primed. If not, acrylic primer is cheap and widely available.
